Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

I have a great PC, but I prefer consoles MUCH more. There is not much appeal to play games on the device I work on, just feels like more work and big-picture mode is shit which makes playing on my TV not the smoothest experience.

I enjoy having a box solely dedicated to entertainment and not pestering me to get sidetracked on reddit/gaf or making me feel guilty not working.

And PC gamers are the whiniest/egotistical fanboys of all time.

I think Half Life 2 is a shitty game. So much so that I got 90% through before just stopping playing.

I don't think level design can ever come close to Resident Evil 1's Mansion.

Minecraft requires no, nor does it incentivize, creativity. It's a boring, ugly game with terrible combat mechanics that add nothing but annoyance to an already annoying game to play. I legitimately feel that Minecraft is one of, if not the worst game I have ever play.

Resident Evil 6 is a really good game with a lot of quality content and some of the best shooting mechanics of any game ever.

Diddy Kong Racing is superior in every way to Mario Kart 64.

Pokemon is a terrible RPG with an extreme lack of innovation or even slight change to the original gameplay conceit.

I think Kirby Air Ride's City Trial mode is the best gameplay mode of any racing game ever made. As in better than the racing in any racing game.

Dante is the epitome of a cool character.

No More Heroes' story makes up for the gameplay so much so that I wouldn't put the gameplay against the game at all.

3DS library is really awful for an adult gamer in this day and age, but people seem so happy with it. Terrible selection of games in comparison to what the Vita has.

There's like OOT and maybe 3DLand, Mario Kart. Pretty much everything is targeting children or people into Japanese games.

Sure, exclusives, I get it. But are people really playing indies on home consoles instead of big budget titles? Nah.

I think the 3DS has too many good games, I can't even finish all of them. I haven't even opened ALBW :(

Then again, I'm into Japanese games.

I liked Remember Me more than BioShock Infinite and The Last of Us this year.

ME1 is the best Mass Effect by FAR.

MW2 is my favorite Call of Duty game

I can't stand the trend of everything having to be open world, 98% of the time I cannot stand open world games. I prefer a mix between the two, edging more on the side of linearity honestly. As long as it's well written, well paced, atmospheric and fun to play I could care less if it's open world or not.

EverQuest, and its first two expansions Ruins of Kunark and Shards of Velious, is not only the best MMO of all time, its also the best game of all time. Successive patches and expansions diluted the forumula, but no other game struck the right balance of risk vs reward like EQ did.

It had the best dungeons - Sebilis, Guk, Crystal Caverns, pretty much every one on Kunark. You felt the scope and scale of the world because fast travel wasn't an option for most. It poineered raiding, it had a complex system of factions that was a meta-game in itself, and it was a true mmorpg and not just another mmo, as its roots in roleplaying were very much evident. It's itemisation produced some of the most memorable and lusted after equipment thats remembered to this day - Manastone, Fishbone Earring, Amulet of Necropotence, Paw of Oppala, Testament of Vaneer, Flowing Black Silk Sash (I could go on for hours, none of it was transitory and you needed a second set of gear for raiding). The spells allowed for emergent gameplay and you could tell a good player from a bad one when they started using them. The spell names were a celebration of the English language - no Fireball I, Fireball II and Fireball III nonsense here. The slow progress and death penalties meant you really needed a group, and this fostered one of the strongest, knowledgeable and enjoyable communities I've been a part of, both on forums and in game.

So there you have it. EQ was the GOAT, a game that had zero focus testing and market research. You often hear developers talk about how "we're making a game we'd want to play" but most of the times thats just not true and we all know it. In EQ's case, it was. If you got to experience it from 1999-2003, congratulations. Because it was the perfect storm and you'll never see its like again.

Fallout 3 is mediocre at best. Very impressive feeling open world and tightly scripted prologue at the outset of the game soon devolves into numb, souless settlements filled with rote quests and directionless character progression. Has the worst player models of any AAA game, has an overly washed out uninteresting world and is utterly rife with technical shortcomings viciously handicapping it's potential.

I don't know what it is, I've been on a witch hunt against Fallout 3 lately. I enjoyed it for quite a while when it came out but it just fell apart eventually. The memory of it has been rotting in my mind ever since.

I cannot wait for the day Bethesda throw out all of their Gamebryo code and start fresh, I don't care if that means no Bethesda games for like six years. That studio is far too talented to continue working with that engine. They deserve better.

Japanese games are better.

Yessss. Aside from David Cage's games and a few casual titles, nothing western developed interests me at all. So boring, bland, and targeting the least-common-denominator. *flame shield up
Where my game auteurs at?

- Golf is the best video game sport.
Hot Shots Golf is the only sports video game I've ever enjoyed. (Or, "Ho Sho Go" as my brother and I used to call it.)

I'm sad that so many people feel the need to use the safe haven of this thread to profess their love for Final Fantasy VIII.
Final Fantasy XV is going to be the best Final Fantasy VIII since Final Fantasy VIII.

- I consider Capcom to be redeemable. Despite the many, many mistakes they have made this generation, I believe that they are capable of turning around. Hopefully, having only $152 million in the bank and Mighty No. 9 doing so well will start to humble the company before it is too late.
This isn't controversial. The Mighty Number 9 kickstarter was resoundingly successful. And hopefully Capcom will realize they dropped the ball on the series. But for Christ's sakes, Capcom, don't blame your FANS when you decided to cancel MML3. That was inexcusable.

I'd love to rant about how stupid and standardless most gamers are when all these newer games are bug riddled, unfinished, uninspired rubbish yet they still unquestioningly buy the shite and then whine about those problems afterwards. But I suppose a rant like that belongs more in a youtube video.

DKC3 is superior to DKC2.

TLOU has a very cliched story line. Zombies have taken over the world, little girl has only cure, escort little girl across country.

What makes it good is the characters, not the story which was meh at best.

how is that controversial?
I mean, the story is the character development, not the over-arching excuse plot.

I hate Earthbound.

It brings nothing to the table and most of the fandom for it revolves around a sense of nostalgia either invoked by the game or players attempting to find a sentimental statement about youth or their childhood that just isn't there. I feel when you drop the outside factors, it's just a mediocre RPG with some humor slapped into it and a completely disjointed, tripe story to guide it.

The irony of the youth statements always drive me nuts, because I bought the original version when I was young and I ended up returning it for a full refund I put towards an N64 because the game wasn't fun to me at all.

I love Earthbound because it was making fun of every JRPG being or trying to be Dragon Quest. the game is also great because of its humor(few games make me laugh so much) and how insane and awesome the story is, it's also pretty heartwarming.

I didn't play the game as a child, I was really interested on checking it out after Smash for the n64 came out and I had no idea who the hell was Ness... so I got the game and man, to this date it's easily one of the best games I've ever had the pleasure of playing.

i love earthbound for its humor and atmosphere

not this "nostalgia" shit you people love to throw around

And I'm guessing GTA5 was godsend? It's not controversial at all because there's a loud crowd who didn't like it just like there is for people who did.

Really, I'm not seeing it. I see crazy amounts of praise.

But I suppose I'm not alone if you say that. I guess I'm more of a dudebro since I loved all the uncharted games.

Shadow of the Colossus and ICO are awful games. Problem, GAF?
Shadow of the Colossus is a muddy mess with terrible controls and a bland, boring overworld. It either gets so much attention because you can climb giant creatures (whoopie, big deal) or that's it made by Team Ico. If the game was released by Capcom or Bioware everyone would be pointing and laughing. And for the record, I liked Ico.

So much truth here.

My controversial opinions

Super Mario Sunshine > Galaxy

Twilight Princess > Wind Waker

Microsoft either needs a top-to-bottom re-structuring of their console division, J. Allard to come back, or to leave the industry entirely because I think a lot of what they're doing or have attempted to do (almost every first-party game having MTs on the One, the DRM stuff, etc.) is poisonous. Meanwhile, Nintendo needs to give Iwata a less serious role, needs to give NoA and NoE more autonomy, and needs to give Mario and friends a break while they focus on new IP.

I hate gaming with a Mouse and Keyboard
*Hides*
I think realistic Military games are pointless and boring
I think MS/Xbox in its current form needs to leave the videogame industry.

-I enjoy Killzone Shadow Fall and Knack. A lot.
-I hate Mass Effect.
-I feel that Mario and GTA are highly overrated.
-I hate playing with keyboard and mouse.
-I loved all the Uncharted games, including UC3 and GA.
-I find God of War boring.
-I hate the Xbox controller's stick placement.
-PS3's OS was ridiculously laggy at times. I hated the Store especially.
-Wii U's OS did not impress me at all. Felt the same as Wii's.
-Alan Wake was cool, but the controls felt clunky and ruined the experience for me.
-I do not support EA. At all.

-Most competitive MP games that are popular on consoles are shit and for casual players.

-Many gamers are ignorant idiots when it comes to the WiiU.

WiiU games: Lol I wouldn't be seen dead with those bomba games
360/PS3 etc. All the games I like are bombas, don't I have great taste for liking all these niche games.

-The FPS genre is stagnant. It needs to be more twitched based and could learn a thing or two from 2D / rail shooters (more dodging and projectiles not just aiming)

-Valve when it comes to game dev, is a shadow of it's former self.

- The kitchen sink approach of modern game dev is crap compared to focussing on 1 or 2 key areas.

- Most open world games suck gameplay wise, and are a lazy way of making games from a design standpoint.

- More 3D fast twitch games should be based in 2D (Doom XBLA no up/down aiming & Modern Sonic like a race track)

The entire Half-Life series is the most overrated franchise in the history of gaming.

A plot that would barely be able to get green lit on SyFy channel and gameplay that, at best, is above average in terms of FPS gameplay. It's well made, but that's it.

Care to explain what makes the magic system special?

I thought Xenoblade was one of the dullest, most boring RPGs I've ever played.
I also thought Earthbound was a terrible game, though I didn't get far because of that.
I like FFVIII, FFXIII and FFXIII-2, but didn't care for FFIX nor FFXII

One of the worst trends in AAA gaming is that challenging gameplay is seemingly being downgraded in exchange for "feelz".

I'm all for good storytelling, but most of the stories in these major games are not good, contrary to what people claim. Warrior guy has to protect young, pretty girl/woman --> "feelz". All of the little plot devices and twists revolve around shallow emotional manipulation.

TWD was nice and all, but how about replacing Clem with a fat, ugly kid? Would the storytelling still hold up and maintain the so-called bond between the two main characters?

Casting. Same thing with movies and TV. You replace Walter White with anyone other than Bryan Cranston and I don't think it's nearly as good. You replace Jon Hamm in Mad Men with a overweight bald guy and the same thing happens.

I don't consider people who only play Bro shooters and the occasional AAAA game like Halo, or GTAV to be gamers. IMO they should be labeled as people who play COD, or people who play GTAV. I don't know why, but this sudden realization really irritated me today. To give another example is like someone watching Tranformers and claiming to be film buffs.

Anyone feel the same way? Thinking back on the past decade I've met quite a few people who asked me what were my hobbies. When I responded that I played videogames, a lot of these people whether be coworkers, classmates, etc, would respond "hey I also 'love' videogames!" I then would hear how much hours they had played COD or Halo, and if I was into them. When these people heard me say that I didn't play those games, I was given that same look you were given in high school when people called you a nerd.

There are so many wonderful games in all platforms, that I actually find it disrespecting to call yourself a gamer, when you have such a limited taste, and/or are to afraid to go beyond your safe bets.

Don't get me wrong. I don't expect everyone to go play The Witcher, Dark Souls, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. but there are too many good games that I firmly believe have something great to say, experience, and that everyone should at least try. All I know is that Sports games, and Bro shooters are not it.

Would you say the same thing to someone who only plays RPG's or RTS's?
