Overgrowth - Weird combat game made by some guy for PC

I could be wrong, but I feel like I was reading the main dude's development blog about (what turned into) this game 8 years ago.

No, you're pretty much right. I remember this being featured on the Moddb front page about that long ago. (a quick google reveals these posts, which seem to be from a very early alpha)

But, I mean, I think there's only two or three people working on the game. They designed their own engine tech from scratch, designed what looks like a really awesome set of modding tools, etc. This is why the credits for Ubisoft games are like, 45 minutes long, because it takes a lot more than three people to make something like this in any reasonable length of time.

That's part of the reason why I still follow this; I didn't actually like their previous game (Lugaru) all that much, but watching Overgrowth change and evolve has been fascinating all by itself. Hopefully by the end there's more to the game than what we've seen so far, but I know that's probably asking a bit much (the modding tools seem designed get the community to help with that, too).

Never heard of this until I just went through this thread. From the videos the gameplay looks to be pretty fun. I'll follow its progress now. Thanks TC.

Wow, that's almost exactly 8 years. And those are the types of posts I remember (with stick figures).

Oh I totally agree, I wasn't complaining. I think it's amazing that they have the dedication to stick with it for so long.

I think I preordered this game years ago... I should try out the alpha and see what improvements they made (if I can still remember my account details)

I kinda want this game to come out

Like, a lot.

this game is some straight Redwall shit

Just go buy the alpha. It has local multiplayer and the game already has lots of custom content.

For instance, all of the Lugaru levels are in this engine already and the arena is fun. Been enjoying this game for about 2 years now.

Actually, I had to recover my account months back and I had a bit of trouble doing so.

I don't understand why they just don't run a kickstarter campaign? Should I contact these guys and organize one for them, GAF?

I am dead serious

Are the Lugaru levels the ones on the main menu, or do I have to download them from somewhere? And yes, the arena is addictive. I must have played it for four hours now.

Wolfire owns Humble/Humble Bundle. I think they have more than enough money. I remember reading that they hope to have a beta out mid 2014 or something

No, you have to download them there's a thread on the official forums with links to custom content and tools to make grabbing and installing them easier

Okay thanks

And about the arena: in a video, the devs said something about mixed weapons match ups (spears vs knives, sword vs unarmed, etc.). I haven't encountered any of that yet; any weapon matches, we've been equally armed. Are those in yet?

Also haven't had any enemies throw weapons at me yet. Wish we could disarm like in Lugaru, but that will probably be added

Just logged in, the name of the tool is the Settings Updates Mods Launcher. It's stickied at the top of the secret preorder forum.

Haven't had mixed weapons in arena yet, and NPCs can't do throws yet, but you and a friend can ;)

Yeah. So they have more than enough money to take their time on this game
Who is this guy and how is he so successfull at everything he does? Just looking at that dialogue-editor alpha update and seeing all the simple but brilliant features they've added to such a small part of the game leaves me flabbergasted.

And he started the humble bundle as well? I'm just amazed. I wish I had just one droplet of the dedication he seems to be able to commit to his projects.

This guys games always seem more like exceptionally impressive tech demos than actual games. Still, I might preorder at some point just for the novelty.

Wait, the game has dogs now? (and is getting cats, rats and wolves)

Now I can't describe it to others as that rabbit fighting game anymore. :(
This was an early sketch of the possible animal races that would be in the game:

Later, they narrowed it down to rats, cats, rabbits, dogs, and wolves

Overgrowth has been in development for about 5 years now. Before that the dev was experimenting with some procedural animation stuff for a sequel to lugaru which would later become overgrowth.

also
Here's a more recent list of the species that are supposed to be in the game, only one not pictured is the wolf. Each one has an ingame model right now except for rats.

They made some other cool mini-games, like Low-Light Combat (nuclear-powered ninjas) or Receiver which has some awesome concepts in it that are way ahead of big AAA FPS titles, as well as Desperate Gods, a very nice board game where if you don't follow the rules you can actually do everything wrong, or just throw the cards and dice all over the place lol.

They have really good ideas.

fuck all I can think of is how sick a Redwall game in this engine would be

The game seems very modding-friendly so it's going to happen, that's probably a given
It's very easy to add custom content to the game. As far as the engine goes everything they have access to, you have access to. Hell, if someone wanted to get started on that redwall mod right now they could totally do it.

So does anybody know why the wolves still don't have clothes even though they've been in the game longer than say, the dogs? Feels kinda weird that they don't even have concept art related to armor considering how melee-focused the game is.

Wolves don't wear armor or use weapons, they consider that stuff sort of like a sign of weakness. Not that they need armor and weapons anyway, hey're full on hulk mode barbarians.

New update, mostly concerned with optimization

Also some tidbits about rats, seems they'll be stealth focused and use camouflage to blend with the environment

Humble split off into it's own entity a long time ago once they got big.

Also, seeing this game in the steam registry make me excite.

Yay I finally got into the action of this super reflexive melee rabbit murder simulator!

I love this little pirouette (B), but is there a point to it?

Where can I get a hold of the parkour platforming maps, like Pianopolis?

You have to download the launcher (SUMLauncher) from the Preorder forum, and then from the launcher, go to community content and search "parkour" to find maps with that tag

Then you just install the content and it'll show up on the game's main menu just like any of the other levels
---
Not sure how you did that spin maneuver, but it's probably a dodge. If you tap one of the movement buttons as an enemy attacks, you do a quick backstep/side step dodge and evade their attack. Very useful when you're fighting more than one enemy and can't block/counter someone coming from a different angle

Amazing gameplay, shit character design.

I'm very interested, but I just cannot stand the concept of rabbits fighting.
What would you prefer? Also you can switch models to play as a dog, wolf, cat

But I love the design because it's intriguing and different and adds character and personality to the world. Humans fighting is one thing, but evolved animals after some apocalyptic event is just cool and unique

Sweet, done.

Any favourite maps?

That's cool - a few paragraphs on an idea that isn't likely to happen doesn't really pique the imagination of those with scant amounts of it.

Point is, the tech is great, and to an extent, the game is already pretty cool; but it's a shame that they've found a thematic niche for it that doesn't marry up all that well with what the game is doing.

To an extent it's working - as you can see in the game - but it's clearly not all that marketable and for obvious reasons.

Thing is, you could have the guy working on all this cool stuff, but have it been applied to an idea that could reap him far greater rewards - and it's a shame it isn't, because they're some boundary pushing things in this game.
Point is your "idea" contains about as much imagination as a wet fart, and makes you sound like an armchair middle management type which is kind of ridiculous.

No, the game plays well. This game has some of the best platformer controls and interaction with the environment that I have seen in a 3d game. The game play pieces are there to have something great be born from it.
