Could be a hold up on the publishers for all we know. Or literally anything else.

I guess it's funnier to imagine them randomly choosing a country and deciding not to make money there though.

It's not available for the whole of Asia and some European countries. None of konami games were ever released here. I still can't buy my castlevania

Will I be okay with my HD4890, 4gigs of memory and E8400 3.0ghz. I play on 1680*1050 only. I can still run most of the games in high/very high (of course, not games like BF4, Crysis or whatever). The Castlevania LOS demo ran fine on this rig.

Twenty. Four. Giga. Bytes. What.

Preloading so hard, ugh. How the hell did they make the file size that large, though? Uncompressed cutscenes?

Edit: Wait, how do I specify where it should download a pre-loaded game? It's trying to install it on my friggin' SSD that certainly does not have space for this game. It seems there's no way to do this? Even if I create symbolic links, Steam would still require me to have enough disk space in the first place, right?

Nope, i have a q9450 OC at 3.2ghz and i don't have minimum requirements, the mini CPU is a Fucking i5, lazy ass port..

Yes, cutscenes. Not uncompressed of course though, then the size wouldn't be 24GB but more like 24TB :p

I'm happy to see they use the PS3's cutscenes instead of the 360's (which were more compressed).

Yup, had this issue before. It's stupid. I only have a 64GB primary SSD which is reserved for the OS and DOTA. Now way MGS will fit there so I can't preload.

Pre-load data is encrypted and stored in the depotcache folder until release. You could move said folder to a different drive and then dump a symbolic link to it in the root of the Steam folder.

I ended up doing this anyway, since there doesn't actually seem to be a disk space check for pre-loads, unlike for regular installs. Seems to be working thus far, hooray!

If only Platinum used more common sense when it comes to resolution options.

Max resolution is still 1080p, isn't it?

Not to start this fight again, but >1080p resolution is present on maybe 4% of machines according to the Steam Survey. Let's be EXTREMELY generous and give an extra 1% for people super-sampling and it is still an incredibly thin number. So to say we didn't use common sense proves once again that "common sense is not always common."

BTW - I did pass along the resolution comments to everyone in our production group meeting we have weekly, so people are aware. It will definitely shape future policy.

I had to move my steam folder to another drive. :(

Not sure about the second question, it started pre-loading for me even though I had only 21gb free (before moving the folder).

Your argument means nothing and has barely anything to do with actual display resolutions. I can set whatever resolution I want on 10+ year old PC games.
Saying that only a small percentage of displays are using resolutions above 1080p is no excuse.

Stop defending this.

Thanks for passing along our concerns though.

I am very grateful for this game to be ported across and have my preload down, I think the main problem is that the not having a fully customisable resolution represents a problem for people now with a higher resolution monitor and definitely for me when i move onto my g-sync monitor and 4K TV.

Hopefully the community will figure a way round this, I always prefer to downsample than use supersampling as i can squeeze as much as i can out my card and still maintain 60fps due to the custom resolutions i can set.

Its a way of future proofing your game, thanks for passing along comments though.

"Stop defending this." is the kind of comment that makes me feel like not passing along anything in the future, stealth edit thanks added or not. If you want to be bombastic towards me, that is fine, but being rude about it is not the best way to make things better. It is easy to say "Platinum" and think that actual people aren't making games, but we are people, so being cool about things is almost always the best option. I'm not stupid, I get why some people want more which is why I took time away from my project to evangelize the greater than 1080p case, but if you don't like the reason we made a decision, it doesn't make it any less true.

Preloading.

I purposely held off on buying the console version just on PC rumors.

Have never played a game from Platinum, but I'm a HUGE Metal Gear fan. I'm pretty hyped.

I bought it to do my part to show that there is keen interest in belated PC ports (the more, the merrier). No idea when I'll get around to playing it; I'm still working my way through Black Flag and Liberation HD releases in less than two weeks.

Sn4ke_911

If I ever post something in Japanese which I don't understand, please BAN me.
Thats because there's nothing there.

That's promo art since before the game was finished, it's official so not sure as to what he's getting at.

That's because you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Do me a favor and stop talking about stuff you don't know for sure.

I could proof that this is fan made, i have the pic with the artists signature and remember the big ass deviantart logo in the middle but i don't have internet now, fucking shit is broken for some reason so i can only post from the phone but i'm 100% this is fan made.

It's just funny, they act like Shinkawa's art isn't good enough, laughable. and if they want a more to the masses appealing cover they could use it from the official boxart.

Will get this game once I build my new PC, but I wish there would be a physical release. Bandwidth caps and shitty Internet speed is not really helping me in this digital age. :(

Same here, I also bought Viking for that very reason.

I'm all preloaded and ready to go for Thursday! Yahoo!

Fetched it for you: http://admirawijaya.deviantart.com/art/Step-by-step-of-Raiden-277600223

Maybe the steam guys just googled image searched the game and thought it was official too. Looks like it's been distributed quite widely as a wallpaper sans artist's signature. I know I had seen it quite a few times before and always just assumed it was promo art like the various covers.

The common sense part of it is the common way people make PC games, and that isn't to a specific hardware configuration. That's how you make console games. Not PC games. I have games over 10 years old that support higher resolutions than 1080p, and they're rather common.

Besides, the Steam survey figures are misleading if you're going to use them to develop your AAA game. They count all the low end laptops that people use to play indie games here and there, making the mid-to-high end gamers seem rather small in number. I mean, if we're going off the steam hardware surveys - then we're looking at a very small percentage of the user base that can run your game based off the minimum requirements for the game ;)

Like I have said earlier in this thread, I have pre-ordered the game, I do currently game at 1080p - I just think the reasoning given for having a max resolution of 1080p is a bit dumb. If you were to give technical reasons like, for some reason your engine can't scale to above 1080p then it'd be a bit more palatable - but we're not. We're just given the reason of "only a few people game above 1080p" which implies the extra effort (which is a small amount of effort for most other games out there) isn't worth it - which isn't how you make PC games.

I know it seems like we should be grateful for a company wanting to make money out of the PC market (guys, they're not doing this as a favour, they're doing this to make more money out of their game.) and whilst I am glad the game is coming to PC, I'm not going to treat this game any differently than any other game. If you're not supporting basic PC game functionality, then it isn't good news.

Common resolution and common sense are two entirely different things.

  • >1080p is not a common resolution. It's an uncommon one (for now). You are right on that one.
  • Capping the resolution to 1080p is not common sense (it's the exact opposite - ask any PC developer). Nor common practice (thankfully! - again, ask any PC developer). It's uncommon and weird. And this is where you are wrong.

It doesn't matter if 0.00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% of PC gamers use higher than 1080p resolutions. It's still not common sense to restrict the user's resolution options.

And I wanted to tell you this before but I sort of forgot about it, but you are making a mistake pointing to the Steam stats to justify why you capped the resolution. That's not how PC gaming works;

  • You look at the stats and decide the minimum hardware to support: yes, that makes sense. Example: Too few people using dx9 cards? Drop support to make your life easier.
  • You look at the stats and decide the maximum hardware to support: NO, this makes no sense. Example: Too few people using 4K monitors? Irrelevant, you have to support all resolutions a user's monitor does.

Which is how Valve themselves use the Steam stats: http://translatedby.com/you/episode-47-gabe-newell-2011-interview-part-1/original/?page=2

Johnson: We have a lot of great tools for that, as opposed to if we had to traverse those ten years ago. In the case of the hardware we can say ‘Well how many people have this hardware, how many people have new hardware’...

Newell: In the case of DX8 and Counter-Strike: Source it’s 2%! (laughs)

Johnson: (laughs) Right, right!

Newell: So, all you DX8 hardware - not DX8 software - all you DX8 hardware Counter-Strike: Source users, watch out!

Johnson: (laughs) Yeah!

Newell: You’ve fallen below the Mendoza Line!

Johnson: (laughs) Right!

..They are looking at them to decided where to cut from the bottom.. not the top!

Thanks for listening. :)

PC gamers will treat you very well, as long as you understand WHY we play on PC. Resolution is not a bargaining chip.

-The benefit to PC games is longevity.
-The benefit to PCs is upgrades.

Long long after your console game stops selling, your PC game will sell and people will remember it, even a few years later. This is a major rarity on console. It behooves YOUR WHOLE COMPANY, to understand that

PC game sales have a VERY long timeline. THIS is why you support higher resolutions.

Damn. People being condescending towards the actual employees from the company is pretty ridiculous. Voicing your concern about resolution is fine. But when you start throwing negative comments instead of offering constructive criticism, that's a great way to have someone not want to make games for your platform.

People should be happy that games like this are making their way to PC. This is also not a bare bones port like Dark Souls. I don't know if people are talking shit because it's the cool thing to do, but people should see this as a positive turn of events. Instead people are trash talking about the 1080p limit.

This is a huge step forward for a Japanese PC port.

As for my suggestion PG, You should look into this Polish company called QLOC to have PC ports done. They are probably THE best at doing PC ports.

I agree. You gotta crawl before you can walk, so I'm perfectly fine with this. Let them gain the momentum on their own. This is WAY better than the Dark Souls situation, too. But at least FROM got their foot in the door, learned their lesson, and are treating their PC version PROPERLY for DS2.

We can only pray to Durante to help us out with a nice fix. Also DONATE to the man for all his hard work.

Its not condescending to expect resolution options on a platform with countless resolutions. And positioning a quality title for future purchases is not just nice, but smart business. There is nothing condescending about that. Its smart solid advice from a profit perspective, and advice from PC gamers that know their own market, to a relative newcomer publisher. Its just plain smart to say "ok it might come later but we will do it if we can, for us, and you"

I agree with this line of argument and think it's the one that should be used to make the case to the devs/publisher. You want people to be able to enjoy your game on setups that may not be common right now but will become more common in the future, especially among the most hardcore PC enthusiasts. Also, that segment is probably the most vocal in their recommendations, and if MGR is a good port, then they will continue to recommend it without reservation for a good while.
