Hollow Knight SIlksong releases September 4

You are part of a tiny minority. How delicious it must have felt to you when you saw that thread the other day. Finally some other people who don't like it either.

Reality check:

That's me but I love a good rekt post so thumbs up.

That would still be Symphony of the Night unless you are looking for the lowest bar for being a metroidvania with decent production quality.

Before Hollow Knight, sure. And considering I played it only a few years ago for the first time (and it held up) I respect people who still have SotN as their top. The advancements, scope, and controls of Hollow Knight made put it over the top for me.

Oh please. Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night shit all over Hollow Knight.

Super Metroid isn't even the best Metroid game, it's got nothing on Hollow Knight.

I'm not quoting to argue with you, your post reminded me of something. Perhaps NeverYouMind NeverYouMind agrees with me.

Alucard had amazing weight to his movement. HK in comparison felt very light and floaty. Like the character was made of paper.

Gatekeeping basic gameplay mechanics, completely wearing out the novelty of assets introduced by excessively reusing them, and floaty/slow responses to basic inputs put it in the bin for indie junk in my case.

Can't lie. This thread is making me want to fire up HK tonight. The cycle repeats itself.
I totally get where you're at.
The first time I played the game, I was wondering what the big deal was all about. I gave it about an hour and I thought it was dull af and I uninstalled it.

Then for some reason, yt recommended some Hollow Knight vids to me with a mustache weirdo. I watched a few of those and saw some really cool stuff and decided to give it a real try.
It somehow clicked the 2nd attempt thru and became one of my favorite games. It's a punishing game for sure and there is no hand holding, but the more I got better the more I wanted to take on this tough bosses.

I hope it does click for you like it did for me.

I'm afraid to ask, but hit me.

Here's my ranking of every Metroid game, from best to worst:

Metroid Prime
Super Metroid
Metroid: Zero Mission
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
Metroid Dread
Metroid: Samus Returns
Metroid Fusion
Metroid Prime Hunters

Haven't played:
Metroid
Metroid II: Return of Samus
Metroid Prime Pinball (I hear this is actually excellent, for what it is)
Metroid: Other M
Metroid Prime: Federation Force
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Super Metroid. Prime and Hollow Knight sit atop the list for me, though Prime is it's own beast being much more Metroid than 'Vania, and 3D.

Zero Mission, Super Metroid and AM2R would be my top three. Having finally finished it last year, I didn't care for Prime. Dread would be pretty low my list as well.

Super Metroid fans on here are some unhinged fucks who follow your post history after to dismiss your opinions. Be careful lmao.

Also, anyone know yet what resolution/fps this is for switch 2? Or is this just the switch 1 version for silksong without updates?

No need to preface. It's light and floaty, but completely responsive. For me this made the Path of Pain an absolute joy, and the boss battles felt like I was weaving in and out of their attacks while countering with my own. I've played very few games where I felt so in control of the character.

Now that you mention it, I should really play AM2R. Curious, what turned you off Prime? Assuming you played the Switch remaster.

Bro you can't drop retardation like this and not catch strays

Super Metroid is a 6/10. Dread is a 9/10.

I'd played it a few times over the years, starting with the Cube and then on Wii U VC and always stopped around the same place. I buckled down and powered through the remaster on Switch. I really didn't enjoy the Simon Says combat which was often boring and other times tedious. It's an admirable translation to 3D and still holds up well visually, but outside of the intro, which I thought was excellent, I just found the entire experience rather dull. The last boss was a huge difficulty spike for me and the other boss designs really weren't that memorable.

Metroid Prime is a better Metroidvania than Hollow Knight.

I agree with you that Prime is a better game, and it's one of my all-time favorites. Being it's 3D, hard to put it as the bar for the genre though IMO.

Not sure about that behavior yet (guess we'll see) but I can't blame anyone for loving Super Metroid, it's an incredible game and was ahead of its time. I just find it strange some hate Hollow Knight as much as they do ITT.

Supposedly it supports 120fps in docked mode. Nothing concrete yet, though the trailer looked like 60fps to me. I'm sure someone at Gamescom who played the demo is counting pixels. Not worries considering we don't even know the price and can't buy the game despite it coming out in 2 weeks time.

Sad you didn't enjoy but glad you gave it a shot. I totally get what you mean about the combat, especially the space pirate troopers where you needed to match their color to the beam. I have the opposite opinion on the bosses but would say my enjoyment came most from exploring every nook and cranny of Talon IV in 3D.

I see why people like it and I don't think it is bad by any means, but it's the type of game that I was desperate for it to end. It just isn't my cup of tea.

Our top 3 match. The only thing Prime was missing was the speed boost, but otherwise it was perfect.

Also, instead of playing Metroid 2 proper, try and find a version of AM2R out there somewhere and play that.

Over 35???

I thought this was just a metroidvania...
I clocked over 50 and that's not including the boss rush DLC (which I didn't do). The world is massive and at a point there are many options for backtracking. Also, it has Souls DNA meaning you'll probably be redoing segments because it's just damn difficult in spots.

HK is not even the longest Metroidvania out there. I've heard Aeterna Noctis goes for 70 hours if you try to do everything.

I'm ready

I'm leaning more to Switch 2 for the odd night at work where my manager is monitoring the other side of the base, meaning I get 4-6 hours to play in the break room while he sleeps through his shift in the break room. Dude just had a baby with his wife so easy to slack at the moment. This release should line up nicely.

Some indie games do this and you don't know the price until day of release. Some speculate $25. But if it's $15 like HK I'll probably just buy both.
If they sell it for 15$, it's a gift.
I think lower price and quantity is a better business idea. Just look at the most popular PC indies this year. Peak, Schedule I & R.E.P.O, all are cheap and sold insane quantities (Peak reached 10M+ copies sold). Triggered all sorts of network & trending algorithms which fueled sales even further.
It's not a tactic for everyone, but I think there's a risk when price climbs over 25 bucks for indies. Triple A should try selling for 48 bucks, see what happens.

Hollow Knight is a great game. It's not my favorite flavor of Metroidvania, but I can see why people love and I think it deserves the credit it gets. I'll buy Silksong day 1 and struggle my way through the normie ending as I did the OG. Solidly in my Tier 2 Metroidvania category, which IMO is still a good place to be.

Don't you think it's weird they haven't posted the price yet?

No, it's pretty clear Team Cherry doesn't give a shit about following norms. No review codes, silence while they work in peace, and "fuck you" money from Hollow Knight's success means they can do pretty much whatever they want. For that reason, I don't know if we'll get a price until release (or within a couple days of it).

Thing is, I think it will be more expensive but not significantly so. $25 to $35 is my guess, they don't really need the money but I would imagine it's a bigger and more expensive game to make now. I could even see $40, but I don't think they'll go higher. They truly don't seem greedy, they just want to live a stress free life and work on games they love creating with largely their current lifestyle.

$30 is the absolute minimum I can see for this game. It's huge, it's being made for 8 years, it's a proven concept.

Whatever it ends up being priced, I would expect that to be a relatively stable price. Not $60 or $70 release with heavy discounting, if it's $30 to $35 they'll eventually do an occasional 50% off sale and it will go down to $15-ish. Thing is, they know this is going to be a multi-million seller and unless it's a colossal fuck up, they will have a revenue stream for years to come from new people buying Hollow Knight and others purchasing it on new platforms.

^ Now that's the kind of peoples that give the vibes for everyone else that Hollow knight is overrated.

It's a good game dude. In no way the best metroidvania. I can't wait for Silksong, but opinions like yours just paints the franchise in a bad picture and the push back we find also in this thread for overrated are as annoying as the cult like following HK has
