‘The Walking Dead’ – Season 7, Part 1 – Sundays on AMC

Been with the show for a long time now and I'm hopeful that the show runners end the show sooner than later. The cast, crew and fans deserve an end.

Lol what are you talking about? The entire cast and creators said just last night on Talking Dead this is just the beginning. And if the comic is still going so why would the show abruptly end?

Did not expect the popping eyeball lol

I dunno guys...I kinda feel like AMC overhyped this, as it just turned out to be gratuitous gore porn. Maybe it's just me, because I've seen this kind of shit for real on the internet (motor vehicle accident aftermaths, 3 guys 1 hammer, etc). But to hype up "two guys getting their heads smashed to bits with a baseball bat in prime time" seems a little over the top and irresponsible. I mean, you've got FACEBOOK with a banner at the top all day yesterday about "share your excitement for TWD!" and everyone posting about it; turns out to be the most brutal murder shown on TV.

Curious if there are any first responders in this thread who've seen this type of gore IRL and how they felt about it and how AMC made these deaths penetrate mainstream pop culture like this.
You do realize this is a series about a zombie apocalypse right? It's always been gory. Glenn's first "death" was gory. Why be squeamish now?

Comic books don't end.

I'm a big believer that stories should have endings in mind, and not just go on forever until the writers get bored and make something up (Lost comes to mind).

I didn't watch Talking Dead last night, but was Chris Hardwick all "Yowza! Walking Dead poor Glenn and Abraham WACKADOO!!!!! How shocked were you? Send us a text VERY to 27214 or SUPER VERY to 27214 and remember to like the show on facebook! Now we're gonna look at this replica of Lucille the bat while I hold it up and we all think about the brutality we just watched and pretend like it isn't tearing at the fabric of moral society! WACKADOOOO!!!!!"

No, it was quite somber, actually.

Yes they do. The Walking Dead isn't like Superman or the X-Men, when Kirkman wants it to be done, it'll be done. It's a creator owned comic.

I think a lot of people are glancing over the premise of The Walking Dead. It's basically "What happens after the credits roll in a zombie film?" There are short term goals and long term goals, but there isn't a neat little bow or end game. It's just a glimpse into the life of these survivors. People come, people go.

I totally agree with you on endings, I think it's an important part of a story. But with The Walking Dead it's really just about the ride. Everyone is infected. Presumably the dead will always keep coming back, society just has to cope or fizzle out.

Man without Abe the crew is going to be light on wisecracking badasses.

Wondering if Eugene will be able to joke again. Feel like next week will be potentially too sober of an episode, walking around with pacifist Morgan and Carol in a wheelchair

So many posters in here have frail sensibilities. Instead of calling for the show to end, why not just stop watching?

Jeez, just because the subject matter is too much for you doesn't mean you get to spoil everyone else's fun.

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.
Your opinion.

I agree with the original post. Never experienced a piece of entertainment that conveyed that kind of horror before. My nerves were shot the entire time.

I feel like I would have been like this if this had been the last episode of season 6, when I was engaged. The disconnect of the summer gap ruined it.

That's not the same thing at all. People are asking for a conclusion.

They should end it with the Negan arc. They really don't need to go where the comics are going now.

Well the director said they have at least 12 seasons of content they can use. So don't see it ending any time soon, unless the ratings start to tank.

I've already stated my opinion but I'll say again that I'm not on the hype train for this one. AMC and the showrunners have just screwed around too much with the audience.

I'm currently 50/50 on whether I want to continue watching it. What would keep me going is the simple fact that I've already invested years of my life into these characters, so in a way it's kind of like being hitched to someone you don't really like because, well... you've gotten this far so might as well stay the course.

Which is not a ringing endorsement by any stretch of the imagination.

Agreed. The taming of the Rick aspect of the show was fine. The group was really starting to feel itself and the audience and the characters needed to be deathly afraid of Negan's guys. My criticism of the episode has nothing to do with that, but rather with the gimmickry and artificial suspense that they still resort to. It's almost as if the criticism from last years season finale and all all the times they teased Glen's death fell on deaf ears. They teased Glen's death so much that when it happened I laughed, primarily because they toyed with it so much that it had no impact at all. Then you get to the everyone hit with a bat montage because we shot this footage and can't let it go to waste along with the so over the top barbecue with Glen and his baby sitting at the head of the table because we're hell bent on making you cry.

This show has had some amazing season premieres. The pilot, Season 3 and Season 5 (I think that's the terminus open).

I'm so glad I have ignored all reports and spoilers since the end of last season. I didn't expect that last night, it was the tensest hour of TV I may have ever seen.

I will say this also. I'm certainly no prude, but I'm absolutely shocked and stunned that they allowed that level of gore on a non-HBO like channel. I haven't been as disturbed by a kill in the same way since maybe the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre with that disturbing body twitching after the hit to the head. Then the eye, the complete destruction, just insane. I just can't believe they were able to air all of that. Wow.

It's one thing when they do gross things to the Walkers, it's brutal but also kinda cartoony since they are, well, zombies. But to have humans do that sort of thing to other humans, in that brutal of a way...I was amazed.

If you stop watching it, then it is concluded!

It's just silly to ask for it to end, on any level. There is no clear end in sight - the premiere established that there is MUCH more to come, and the show is the most watched scripted show on television. If you no longer enjoy it, or are wary of where the story will go from here, then the show is not for you and you should drop it.

ehhh, you are underestimating Rick, here. I kind of feel like Rick's on Carol's level as far as manipulating 'threats' into a false sense of power over them. What you see as Rick breaking I saw as Rick flipping the switch and giving Negan what he wanted in spite of Rick's own anger/pride.
Um, Rick still has something to lose, Carol doesn't.

The fact that all three of the people closest to Maggie were killed as a result of losing their heads in some way (decapitation, gunshot, and now bludgeoning) is just salt in the wound.

Hadn't thought about that. Plus, all three of them were killed by humans rather than walkers.

Also: Sasha's next bf better watch his back. lol

The show writers just handled this whole situation so well, based on the knowledge of the comic and the direction the fans know the story is supposed to be heading. I was so impressed.

  • Everyone knows Negan has to kill someone. Everyone thinks Darryl is safe because of his fan following on the show.
  • Everyone knows glenn is supposed to die because of comic spoilers. People doubt the show writers would piss off people by killing off a major character, so people expect one of the many newcomers to be axed off instead.
  • Rick is missing a hand at this point in the comic, so after the trailer (when he takes Rick into the truck), people assume this is also where Rick loses his hand...solely because they know it happens in the comic.

So the writers use the meta knowledge to throw multiple curve balls of what we think we know is coming to keep it surprising for everyone.

  • First person killed is Abraham. The show continues, people think Glen is safe and the writers chickened out. (Expected result. Show-only people are surprised, Comic faithful are somewhat annoyed.)
  • Darryl freaks out and hits Negan. (Now everyone is fearing for Darryl)
  • But instead of Negan killing Darryl, he kills Glenn. (Show-only people are double shocked, as they are supposed to be. Comic readers are now satisfied. People in both camps get a surprise.)
  • Darryl dodges the bullet, but his fate is now unknown. His existence now seemingly causes the death of Glenn.
  • Just when it looks like its slowing down, Negan sets up a situation where he's about to chop someone's limb off....But instead of Rick, it's Carl. (Show-only people are now triple shook, Comic readers have been curved yet again. After 2 deaths there's little reason to assume they won't do it.)

Carl's arm survives, but regardless, the situation was tailored to use what you know about the comic story against you. It's like an F-U to fans who thought they were too chicken to make Negan work in the show.

Big respect to them. Although i secretly was wishing Glenn survived...:(

Edit:

This episode was graphic indeed, but it's still a far cry from how Glenn went out in the graphic novel. Even Game of Thrones wasn't ballsy enough to show someone's in-tact face getting ripped apart, so I wasn't expecting them to go full detail on television. But The Viper vs. The Mountain was far more disturbing IMO.

How do you figure? It was pretty much the same.

Rick had multiple times in that episode where he could have taken out Negan in that trailer but of course, Walking Dead logic is at work here.

That's just obtuse.

everybody saying Daryl is the reason Glenn died, I thought Negan killed him coz he was gonna kill him anyway for jumping at him when he said he was gonna put Maggie out of her misery.

Then Simon would of took over and everyone dies.

Kill Negan and then think of something. They've gotten out of worse shit before.

He went for the ax at first and it failed. A while later, Negan sits right beside him with just a bat and ax and he doesn't go for him? He walks past Negan to get out of the trailer and Negan only had a bat and he doesn't go for him? He climbs back into the trailer with an ax and Negan's back turned and he doesn't lunge at his back with it? WTF.

No, he said he would give them one freebie, since it was an "emotional moment." lol, but then Daryl acted out too, so somebody else had to go down. Then he chose Glenn because reasons. Probably just to rattle them more since they were expecting him to kill Daryl.

He wouldn't have killed Glenn if no one in the group fucked up again, but I think he was itching to kill Glenn. I'm sure when Glenn jumped out of line in the first place he wanted to bash him right then and there. But Negan wants to seem somewhat reasonable so he couldn't kill him without giving a warning first.

No he gave the group a warning after Glenn jumped at him and said he wouldn't let that shit fly again.
