Well, I'm done with the show. I don't know why, but coming into this season, I wasn't hyped at all. I didn't even care about finding out who died.

It's weird, I mean it's not like they haven't killed off people in gruesome ways before, but for some reason this episode just stuck out as pure murder porn. I guess it's just not for me anymore.

Oh well. Let me just say that after seven seasons, Shane was still the GOAT.

Exactly. People are confusing their anger with one of their favorites dying and trying to act like it's because of the gore. It's bullshit, this show has been this gory since forever, we have seen worse. The reason people are freaking out is because it hurt them emotionally, which is exactly what that episode is supposed to do.

Some of the critics going ham read like clickbait. They'll be back next week.

It is what it is though. The writers and actors will have seen this reaction coming a mile off so no one needs to think the hysteria online will in anyway impact the show. The reality is as it's been reminded to everyone TWD is gorey and violent, and will continue to be.

Especially in the later/closing seasons where more big characters bite the bullet.

Shane lived again and was able to kill off as many mutherfuckerz he wanted as the Punisher

I don't understand how everyone that is quitting now because they consider the show gore/murder porn stuck around past Noah's death. That was way more brutal than either of the two deaths from last night. Ya'll inconsistent as hell.

They won't quit. Or at least very few will. It's largely called not being able to handle an emotional response proportionately, so coming online and saying you're done with the show within hours of seeing the episode. Give it till next week when the next episode is out and most of those people whose invested 6 seasons of their time into TWD will want to know what happens next.

Are people who are "quitting" because of the gore being serious? Surely not. That could be the dumbest shit I have ever read.

The critical reaction is such overreaction click bait, ridiculous. I understand the criticism over the cliffhanger and how they ruined the impact of the moment. But at some point you need to review the episode you are watching and a lot of those reviews did not. They just complained about shit the writers pulled past seasons and didn't focus on how amazing that hour of TV was despite them selling out last season.

There's three things Negan should worry about right now.

1) They've put Daryl in such a position that of course Scott Gimple is going to have him redeem himself in some Superhero fashion and rain hell down on Negan and his crew.

2) Carl. He wasn't shedding tears like the others... instead he was literally shaking with anger, clearly urging to kill. S3 Carl is back, except no amount of farming and guidance is going to stop him this time.

3) Dwight. I think he's totally going to screw Negan over

Carol doesn't count because she's wack as fuck right now. Don't know what's going on with her mentally right now.

Maggie gonna be broke

Exactly! Same with half of the posters here that say they are done. They will be back in this thread to complain about something new.

Wasn't there a TV thread on GAF where all the posters that said they were done with a show but posted the next season got a ban? That should be a rule for all GAF TV threads.

I've asked a few times, but how does a six minute sequence of which like three or less was actual violence make the episode "pure murder porn"? Most of the episode was just Rick and Negan. At the end, no one was killed. No blood, just the looming threat of violence. Yes, those moments in the middle of the episode were shocking and uncomfortable.

If anything, people saying this movie was just gore porn makes me think of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which was banned and criticized for being incredibly gory when it released despite there being almost no blood or gore in the entire movie.

This episode was relentlessly bleak, intense, dread-inducing, and emotionally draining. But it was only shockingly violent for a few minutes

I had zero emotional response to those two being murdered. I honestly don't care what happens next, though I'm sure I'll hear the details after my wife watches the episodes.

Relax people, it's ok for people to no longer watch a show that you're super interested in. You don't need to come up with excuses.

I feel the same way, maybe I'am just desensitized from watching horror movies but it wasn't THAT bad. Don't get me wrong, it was really fucked up but it wasn't enough to make me quit watching.

I read the IGN review and I think it was AV Club and I almost spat my coffee out. It is ridiculous. Now I've noticed a few comments here saying the same thing. The kills were "too much" and they're "done". That's just crazy talk.

I don't think it's anything to do with being desensitized. It's just TV. It's not a documentary. I've been watching TWD from the beginning. I've been reading the comics from issue 1. I didn't have any problem with the kills.

Totally agree. Granted, not many people were actually emotionally connected to Noah, since he was a recent addition that didn't last very long...but his death was horrific. Probably the worst in the show by far.

The cliffhanger was fine, TV drama tactics 101. People shouldn't still be getting salty about having to wait to find things out in a current day TV show.

I actually thought the way they started was great as well. Rick's, or Andrew's acting was great and that buildup of tension was brutal. Rather than just episode starts, cuts straight to killing.

Oh shit really? That sounds like hilarious GAF at its best. Mods really pull off some damn funny consequences of people saying dumb shit. If this is real and the topic is still around please link.

It's just a consequence of it coming across as weird one would have already sat through 6 seasons of gore and killing and now it's enough. That's all!

There is no way after what I would call one of the most gut wrenching and intense episodes of television ever, that many stop watching. They might not admit it but I'm pretty sure they will have to know what comes next.

Because that's what the episode centered on? Otherwise nothing else really happened. Even when it was just Rick and Negan, they kept flashing back to the murders, or to the possibility of more people being murdered. Plus, I feel like that looming threat of violence is part of what makes what I would consider murder porn. Rick being forced to cut off his son's arm is all part of the foreplay.

It's just a consequence of it coming across as weird one would have already sat through 6 seasons of gore and killing and now it's enough. That's all!

I agree completely that it's weird.

I agree completely that it's weird.

It's a double whammy of gore, which has been in abundance since episode 1 of season 1 and then time investment. To watch 6 seasons of something and then actually be disciplined enough to completely quit now for what is setting up to be the worst bad guy yet, and the most peril the cast has ever been is... weird. Weird is the word.

So me and others challenge anyone who says they are quitting to honestly not tune in week lol. My words more so go to the critics like that glorious verge article, but many viewers are saying similar things online. The walking Dead quitters club? What are we, 10 years old?

The episode centered on breaking Rick. It was so centered on Rick part of it was Rick POV. All of it was to show what would it take to break this man who has been nearly invincible for so long. The murders didn't break him which to me was fascinating. The best part of that episode was watching him about to chop off Carl's arm and be a complete broken crying man. That was amazing. That's what the episode was about and of course where you go from here.

What GoT did with Jon snow and that whole cliffhanger fakeout was waaaaaaay worse than the cliffhanger for this season. But that show wins an Emmy for it.

Getting back to two main characters and their story, setting up an entire new community and the main character that comes with it. Illustrating the influence The Kingdom has on the series and Ezekiel's role in this whole Negan business.

Yea I find that kind of silly since it's been 6 seasons of zombies having their guts everywhere. On top of the other gruesome ways characters got offed.

Aside from Morgan, Glenn was the only character I cared about.

I didn't see the point in killing off two characters like that aside to "shock people". I don't really care for that kind of writing. Either pick Glenn or Abe or Daryl. I guess another reason was to demonstrate how ruthless Negan was but to me, having the main characters of the show crying in the last episode, was enough for me to prove how ruthless and dangerous Negan is.

I noticed he even let some nose gunk fly when crying. That's dedication :p That ain't no fake fluid added for effect!

But imagine having to do tons of takes of that scene anyway. Damn.

How did you people survive the Season 5 opener? I thought those prisoners getting treated like cattle (baseball bat to the head, throat slit into a trough) in a very organized process was 100x worse. I'm not trying to be dismissive of anyone's reaction to violence, real or fictional. But I'm surprised people watched that and we're okay but then think this was too much.

Probably because there is zero emotional attachment. It's a rather human trait to lose your shit more if something happens to something you care about. Glenn didn't get to go out a hero either. He just got fucked up and that's him history. That really rubs people the wrong way. Everyone likes a heroes death, especially for a universally liked character.

How so? That's effectively built dread and tension. It's that old trope that not seeing something is often scarier than actually seeing it. How can no violence be part of that? In a Saw or Hostel or slashers, it's gory but the movies treat it like the Raid treats an awesome fight. It's half-disgusting/half-this is so crazy it stops being disgusting and starts being absurd. The build-up to the gory deaths is not one of dread but of preparing for excited disgust that makes the theater crowd let out a "Whooaa" when the payoff comes

This wasn't that at all. That moment at the end wasn't murder porn foreplay, and the deaths certainly weren't murder porn. The story and tone doesn't treat it as such in any way. It's ugly, uncomfortable, and gruesome, in the way that fictional violence rarely is. Rick getting ready to cut off Carl's arm wasn't tense excitement; it was emotionally draining to see a father broken to such an emotional desperate wreck. It wasn't fun, it wasn't cool, and the show never treats it as such

That's what separates this from the actual torture/gorn porn films like Saw and Hostel and others

Haven't they killed two characters in one episode before, so why now get bothered by it. If you really only liked Glenn and they killed him so now you have no interest in the characters then I say that's a good reason. But the show has been this since the beginning, nothing has changed, not sure why this is the thing that breaks people. A person you cared about died, that's what hurts, that's why it's so effective.

I don't recall them killing two characters as important as Glenn and Abe in one episode. I could be wrong tho.

I wouldn't say hurt since it's
Glenn's second death for me.
so i was well aware there's a huge chance that's going to happen sooner or later. I was just riding the Glenn wave till it actually did happen. I'm just not as interested in the show as I was before.

I still have Morgan. Last season's episode about him really put him in my radar. The best TWD episode are the one with the least amount of violence, but those episodes are great partially due to the fact that they live in such a doomed and violent world.

Edit: amazing how little screen time Negan has gotten, and he's already accused of being a racist.

I'll bite. For me it was more the scenes in the RV. The word that came to my head was "sadistic" and I'm having a hard time describing the feeling I had during that scene. Sort of just, why am I watching this shit? It's not entertaining anymore, it's not something I want to watch, I don't care what happens. My mind then went to, Negan will most likely die or at least get taken down and I simply don't have an interest in seeing how it happens. Do I really want to invest my Sunday nights into this show anymore? And the answer is no. It's not as simple as it was just too gory or "torture porn". Hard to explain I guess.

I will say for me I've been the one on the other side tons of times just shaking my head at people quitting shows so it's very weird being on this side of it. I feel kinda guilty about it honestly! Oh well, there's plenty of great TV out there.

They killed Lori and T-Dog in one episode before.

Lori was the second lead at the time so that's one. However, T-Dog [as much as a fan-following he gets] at the end of the day was a nobody. He was that guy with the riot-shield. Sophia's Doll from S2 had more characterisation.

They killed the whole Anderson family in one episode but none were main characters.

They killed Andrea and Milton in one episode but one is Andrea and the other wasn't a main character.

The closest situation is probably Hershel and The Governor in S4. Both main characters.

However, this is still quite different as Abraham and Glenn were both very beloved.

Preach! I actually watched a couple of the Saw movies a few months ago and this is nothing like that. Those movies don't deal with the trauma of the moment beyond one character screaming another character's name for 5 minutes. Then it's on to a newly designed trap. It fetishizes it because you're just seeing new ways people can be ripped apart. The Walking Dead is guilty of that with some of their zombie designs, but the kills here weren't that at all. It was two people being beaten to death by a crude blunt instrument.

Not to mention that most of the episode is framed around Rick remembering what just happened, and then realizing that if he doesn't comply, the same thing will happen to everyone else.
