Overall, the season was a mixed bag. Good premiere and a few other episodes (Daryl, Carl, Eugene, Morgan, Dwight), some bad (Rosita and Sasha), and a whole lot of middling. There was little reason to drag it out in the way that it was done. The war taking until the finale wasn't the issue, but a lack of compelling and consistent material to bring us to that moment.
Hopefully S08 doesn't make the same mistakes.
- Dwight's turn. Hopefully the writers make good use of the complexity of his situation. And no, he can't just cap Negan for reasons covered in the episode itself if I'm not mistaken.
- Trash Queen wanting a piece of that Rick pie
- Michonne and Miss Winning brawl. Brutal stuff.
- While the flashbacks and related material took the wind out of it, zombie Sasha and Negan's reaction were well done.
- Carl Whick
- The whole exchange between Rick and Negan.
- Negan's reaction to Sheva and Maggie.
- Ezekiel theatrics
- Maggie's speech (though perhaps not the montage
Things that didn't:
- Most of the Sasha content. The flashback with Abraham felt disconnected, especially as we never really saw them like that prior to his death. Felt like a last ditch attempt to make the audience care about something that wasn't really present in the first place. Same with the Maggie dream/memory (morning after the tornado before Jesus is introduced?) Really hate the telegraphed character death method as it steals what impact there could be.
- The failed detonation. May have missed it, but what exactly happened? Was the signal jammed by Eugene or did the Stinkle Clan disarm it (except then they went in and disarmed again, so idk).
- Ezekiel, a dozen or less do not make a regiment.
- The battle was shot poorly, and not just the infamous Tara and Rosita moment (if only she did).
- Maggie's speech should have been a moment with Rick than a VO. But instead we had to have all those commercialshe.

They established over the past season and then some why they can't just kill Negan. Folks like Simon and whats-her-face that acclimated Eugene will step up as Negan. There are some like Dwight, Eugene, and Carson that aren't that way, but most of Negan's outfit will rise to it.
It's why they had to take out the whole entourage there and utilize momentum to quickly move on the Sanctuary and outposts.
Kind of a silly nitpick out of everything else.
Now, why does she only attack the person who steps in the spot Negan was just at is the true issue. A true failure in the chain of command.

Negan is pretty much the mastermind behind everything with the saviors, sure his enforcer/lieutenant people would probably pick up the slack eventually but it's not like it would be some completely worthless effort to kill him any of the million times they were given the opportunity. And speaking of the enforcers, from what we were shown it seems like the only one who would really give any kind of shit if Negan died is the Trevor lookin guy. Like that sleepy eyed guy who goes to the kingdom seems like he'd just say fuck it to the whole thing.
I thought it was a pretty good finale. It's appropriate that Sasha's plan to become a zombie was as stupid, short-sighted and ineffectual as her suicide mission on Sanctuary. Live like a punk, die like a punk.
What bothered me most was that all the flashbacks and focus on Sasha just seemed like a way to bloat the episode's length. If they want to do 90 minute finales then that is great, but at least pack them full of conflict and intrigue. Don't give us a dozen minutes of inconsequential flashbacks.
Boy, Rick's group has really fucked over the women's camp now, haven't they? Took all their guns, and now at least half of them are probably in Negan's hands. Negan giving the finger to the Alexandrians was a direct echo of Tara shooting the bird to that little girl in the women's camp. It seems like they're trying to suggest that the Alexandrians really aren't much better than the Saviors, but the writers can't resist playing up a more heroic angle for them.

At this point, I tend to feel like people should probably acquaint themselves with some of the broader spoilers from the comics, just so their expectations are in check. I don't read the comic at all, but I've been exposed to some of the future plotlines. I tend to feel like I enjoyed the episode more knowing that there was no way that Negan was going to be killed in this standoff. I think a lot of people are upset that the Saviors storyline was not completely resolved in 90 minutes......since I knew it was just a prelude to a larger arc, I didn't have that expectation and subsequent disappointment.

It is weird because I'm in the same boat as you are, even moreso because I knew the spoilers for this episode going in and I still enjoyed it far more than I did the majority of this season. I think some people just cannot be pleased though.

Correct. However I don't know how anyone who hasn't even read the comics could think Negan would be a one and done. Hell, even the governor lasted longer than 1 season. Plus this season spent a shit ton of time setting up this finale, with the kingdom being hesitant to join in to waiting until the next to last episode for Dwight to turn on the sanctuary.

I don't see the similarities at all. Their faces are, to put it kindly, very different.

I don't think that's what I said. If a viewer expected a quick end to the Saviors, I think that is reasonable given the story rhythm the showrunners have developed. If you think an episode is stupid just because you didn't get the resolution you expected though, then maybe that is on you.
I knew that Negan was going to walk away from this conflict, so it allowed me to enjoy the twists I didn't know were coming (zombie Sasha, the Scavengers double-cross) without getting hung up on the fact that they didn't manage to murder Negan and topple the Saviors organization in one fell swoop.
They were there in the before after. They take. They don't bother.
When the ZA happened, the US military dropped a bomb on them while they were handling stock at Hot Topic.

And no satisfaction at all. Not even a little. Didn't get to see Neagan die, or the mustache guy die, or Karl die, or Morrigan die. What we got is a Sasha death but who cares (and the episode wasted what seemed like several hours setting it up with boring nonsense and really uncomfortable immersion breaking romantic scenes with redhead mchairy face) and some extras got killed. I guess it's neat that the tiger killed some people.

+ The Kingdom stuff with Ezekiel might come off super corny, but I liked it. I thought that blowout episode was amazing. I hope Carol ventures into new ground now and doesn't flip-flip her character again.
+ Negan. He's been mostly great besides the overdone monologue. Haha
+ Carl's been great this season. Actor has improved too. The episode with him and Negan was one of the better episodes this season.
+ Michonne
+ Walkers and practical effects team as usual. Stay away from cheap CGI TWD, you're amazing at practical effects, use it.

No, I'm talking about the chopped down tree. Dwight suggested that to the group when he switched sides. I was asking why would they chop the tree down as that is bleeding obvious to the Saviours that something is amiss, not that it actually mattered considering they were working with the trash people. Even if the Trash people didn't betray Rick, dropping the tree is stupid on Dwight's part which made me question if he double crossed them, that's all. It's the writing and character actions that make no sense.
I really liked this season. Hell, everything since they arrived at Alexandria has been top tier Walking Dead. If they would have just shown Glenn and Abe bitting it at the end of last season it would have been perfect.
The shit with them wandering around the woods fighting a different random group every two or three episodes between the prison and Alexandria got old real quick.

I still have no idea what you're trying to say here. I don't understand how you're jumping from "Dwight knocked down trees" to "so I questioned if he betrayed Rick."
It's the literal opposite. You saw the trees down so you then knew he was being honest with Rick.

I watched it because i enjoyed 5 of the previous 6 seasons, and kept waiting for this one to become good. But nope. Hopefully the next one will be.

In terms of TV action sequences. Someone mentioned true detective season 2 as a joke.
Which reminded me of that absolutely great action scene in true detective season 1 where they were shaking down a rival dealer dressed as cops.
