Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
The game isn't even out and they're already working on the film. That's some high confidence in the IP.

A live-action film adaptation of the video game "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33" is in the works before the game even launches.

Variety has learned exclusively that game developer Sandfall Interactive is teaming with Story Kitchen to develop a film version of the game, which will be published by Kepler Interactive. The game is due to be released on April 24 on Xbox, Playstation, PC, Steam, and Epic. It was recently showcased on Xbox Developer Direct and was featured on DualShockers' Top 10 Most Anticipated Indie Games of 2025 as well as the cover of "PC Gamer" and "Edge Magazine."

"We're thrilled to collaborate with Sandfall Interactive to bring the rich, immersive world of 'Expedition 33' to the big screen," said Story Kitchen founders Dmitri M. Johnson & Mike Goldberg. "The game's compelling narrative and complex characters provide a solid foundation for a cinematic experience that will resonate with both gamers and moviegoers alike."
Casting and directorial decisions for the film are currently underway. Johnson, Goldberg, Timothy I. Stevenson and Elena Sandoval will be producing for Story Kitchen

"Partnering with Story Kitchen allows us to expand the universe of 'Clair Obscur' beyond the gaming realm," said Sandfall Interactive's CEO/Creative Director, Guillaume Broche. "Their expertise in storytelling and passion for our vision make them the perfect team to translate our game into a captivating film."

Just like when they announced celebrity VAs, I wish they'd focus on the quality and release of the game instead of this tertiary stuff. That said, if this wasn't done with the game budget whatsoever, it's fine. I probably won't engage with it, but it's fine.

Game looks promising but nothing is guaranteed. It could just as easily be a messy 6/10 game that gets no traction and then all of this gets cancelles

I cannot wait to be done with this reincarnated multimedia obsession. People didn't even show up for a DnD movie. Why the fuck are they going to show up for this?
I get it, Hollywood is starved for IP, but this is just ridiculous.

Like, look at this shit. This Story Kitchen company is lined with a bunch of IP that will go absolutely nowhere in Hollywood. They were also behind the fantastic Tomb Raider Netflix cartoon. Oof

I'm uping this because I just found out about it and I'm sure it went over people's heads at the time. Clearly, the studio was confident in the game's success.

Wow yeah never saw this news but seeing it now, they didn't need to worry about the quality of the game haha

Normally I'd be against adaptations like this, but I've had friends, WHO PLAY GAMES, fall in love with the last of us show and never play the game. They also are all "wow whats this until dawn movie it looks like the first good horror movie in forever" and it kills me but at least this way they'll witness SOME of the gloriousness

Live action feature-length? Mmh. I'd prefer a short animated series. One done in the same semi-realistic style as the game (instead of an anime like Cyberpunk). They could even reuse assets.

Woah you're right. Sign me the f up- though. Same studio as Sonic franchise, which ain't too bad imo.

Though would've preferred an animated series focusing on the different expeditions- regardless, sign me the ffff up. This game is insane.

I don't really see how they could do the world of this game justice in live action unless you have a massive CGI budget.

Being a french studio it would be cool if they could eventually work together with their compatriots at Fortiche Production

Who are great at making stunning fantasy worlds at a fraction of what it would cost to make it in live action.

Wasn't that show the most expensive animated show ever?

Awesome, this is the type of game I want to celebrate right here. Get Shadowheart to narrate the movie.

Yes, but even then animation is way cheaper. It cost $250 million, including marketing, to make 18 40 minutes long episodes.
So 720 minutes of stunning animation for about the same money that it took to make the shitty live action of Snow White...or like half a season of Rings of Power, or a season of that terrible Witcher show on Netflix.

250 million over the course of 2 seasons. Very expensive for an animated show but still peanuts compared to live action productions with similar scope.

Well then yes in that case sounds like animation is the way to go.
