1up on 360 backward compatibility

they've talked to microsoft. a new wrinkle: certain upcoming xbox 1 releases may be backward compatible even with hd-free tard pack units. i didn't know there were upcoming xbox 1 releases. and none of this makes it any more likely that my 360 will play metal slugs three through five. but it's interesting.

edit: wait -- seems they haven't talked necessarily to microsoft, but to some industry source. literacy -1 :(

Yeah, apparently once 360 ships - NO MORE XBOX GAMES EVER!

:lol

It's actually not that surprising. Think about it. They will know for sure not to rely on a hard drive - so they can develop for that in mind.

We'll probably start seeing "Works on Xbox 360" stickers on upcoming Xbox game titles.

Just means MS is convincing developers for upcoming AAA Xbox games to not use the hdd. ;)

Of course, this would actually mean there are AAA titles coming out after the 360 is released and we all know this isn't true.

Ninja Gaiden Black is the last AAA Xbox game to come out.

To bad MS didn't try this a lil earlier because like u said there are very few Xbox games left to come out that anyone would consider BC worthy.

MS should just release the list of what's working now and update it as it goes instead of leaving us in the dark.

Mrbob,

Do you have a list of every single game that will ever be released on the Xbox from now until the end of it's life?

I guarantee that Madden will be on that list. Probably some UbiSoft shooters like Rainbow Six or Ghost Recon. Those games will suck that tit until its as dry as the mojave desert.

Starcraft Ghost is the only potential candidate. But I still hold out hope there will be a next gen version.

Not necessarly. If you have a 360 why would you want to play current gen Madden?

Can MS make things any more confusing for the average joe?

So far we have:

2 skus
Some Xbox 360 games require the hard drive (FFXI) and others don't.
Some Xbox games will work on the Xbox 360 and some don't. Of the ones that do work, some of them will work on the core system and others won't.

I think MS and devs would be fools to just drop the Xbox entirely. I understand "next-gen" and all - but the average consumer is going to sit on their Xbox for quite some time I would think.

Just like most people won't have a PS3 until probably 2007 or 2008

MS isn't going to drop the Xbox. I just don't see any exclusive AAA titles left on Xbox after the 360 comes out. Multi platform releases will also be on 360 so why include support for the game?

I saw UbiSoft's release list for their fiscal year that runs until Q3 '06 I believe, and they've got a ton of stuff coming out for Xbox. There isn't going to be any let-up from them as far as Xbox development for a very long time. As I said, EA will also release every annual update for their franchise, I would expect for the next several years. Small devs will also continue to develop for it because the costs are cheaper and its already got a 20mil (estimate) installed base.

Well, that's now. Maybe things will change. Who knows. You never know if some dev has had a secret project going on that they will spring on the masses.

Hey, it's wishful thinking, but I can dream cant' I? There is still that "possibility".

All signs point to MS completely dropping the system though, and just letting a few of the larger, western third parties (EA, Activision, Ubi Soft, etc.) continue providing support.

If they don't bail on it, they'll have to keep producing hardware. They say they are going to, but I don't believe it in the least. The system manufacturing costs won't drop below it's retail price for quite some time, and as such every system sold (still!) is a loss for MS. Because of this, a price drop in the next 6-12 months is almost counterproductive. The chances of the Xbox going below $149 is very, very slim, and MS knows this. They also know that once the PS2 inevitably drops to $99, the Xbox 1 is toast.

Also, it's blatantly obvious already that each and every single one of MS' first party studios has shifted to the 360, as MS really needs to do everything it can to push the system this year and next. Without high profit generating first party titles, MS would need large amounts of third party software to sell through (for the royalties) to break even on the hardware losses. Problem is, the software isn't there.

Hence, I don't see them continuing to support the Xbox in any even marginally significant manner past this holiday season. They'll keep quietly lowering their manufacturing quotas until the Xbox becomes almost impossible to find, and then they'll dump the system discreetly ala Nintendo.

Jesus shit, as if this wasn't going to be confusing enough for casual gamers.

I wonder what the list of backwardly compatible games is going to look like on day 1. Will it be only first-party games? Only Platinum Hits? I wanna see how many of the games in my library are gonna be compatible and what the schedule's gonna be like to add more. Will you still be able to play Xbox 1 Live games via the 360?

I doubt even MS knows how they're going to do it comepletely right.

And this why I feel they should just can backward compatibility. I mean, they crippled one version, why continue?

Personally, I think the only Xbox games I care about are these:

Halo
Halo 2
Gotham
Gotham 2
Half-Life 2
Doom 3
Burnout 3
Ninja Gaiden
NG Black
PSO
KOTOR

Am I forgetting anything essential? To me, those are the only Xbox games I'd really like to carry over into the next-gen. I think...

Crimson Skies! One of the best games this gen! Tons of fighting games [Dead or Alive shit doesn't count], Psychonauts, Steel Battalion, all the XBX versions of Splinter Cell (superior versions(tm) + LIVE), Forza Motorsport, Panzer Dragoon Orta, etc...

PSO? Phantasy Star Online? You still playing that? :D

I mean, I don't think I'd mind it if all MS first party are fine as well as all the Platinum Hits. That pretty well covers the games I'd like to continue playing. There are little questions left like, can you transfer saves from your XB1 HDD to the 360? What about downloaded premium content for those? If b/wc is emulated, will the new 360 GUI run atop the XB1 emu (meaning that you can press the Xbox Guide button to pause your game and keep your friends list up and such? (Thus making every XB1 game "Live Aware" whether it was programmed that way or not.)

But maybe we won't know till launch day, huh?

I hope there is a way to transfer save files.

I did so much work to unlock the Ninja Gaiden trilogy on Ninja Gaiden Xbox. I don't want to lose all that. :(

I can just see an article in like five years looking back on the generation and lamenting Microsoft's "failed launch." I hope not (being as I just ordered my 360), but even I have to be doubtful of them at this point. Two SKUs, backwards compatibility confusion, the graphics problems they are having with PDZ and the like....this could be horrible for Microsoft.

Come on, X05, straighten this out!

Even successful launches can turn out to be failures in the end. Look at Dreamcast. Dozen games at launch -- Sonic, Soul Calibur, etc. And one could also argue that the PS2's lack of hardware at launch and for six months afterward was "bad," yet it didn't make much difference later on.

Now assuming more compatiblity is available with Xbox Live
.. oh boy

Does Halo work? Yes, with the HDD
what about Burnout Revenge? It works without the HDD
What about JSRF? It works with the HDD, and you need to connect your Xbox 360 to the Internet to get the update
and Breakdown? Does not work

gary-phone-confused.jpg

Hey son, could you come over and help me figure this out?

I hope for the sake of people who don't have broadband that enough games are backwardly compatible at launch without needing to hop online to get a "patch." Otherwise how are you going to get updates? Perhaps via OXM or an Exhibition disc? There are a *lot* of variables here.

Now THIS would have been a good question for Allard to answer in that stupid chat. Instead we get "hey guys you can put your game saves on the hard drive!"

We're screwed. I just found out we can't move save files form Xbox to 360. Lame. More in a new thread soon.

I have heard MS 1st and 2nd party devs are 100% focused on X360 development.....in other words, *no* Xbox 1 games are being worked on by Microsoft...

That can't be true, can it???

It's true. And I say this is a good plan. It is time to focus on next gen. They already got steam rolled this gen.

There are no 1st party xbox games in development. KUF:Heroes is published by Microsoft though.

I'd trade every game on your list to be able to play Panzer Dragoon Orta, Jet Set Radio Future, and Psychonauts.

as good as the games you listed are, i'm glad your not in charge

I'd like to play Black, and Blazing Angels on X360. When 360 is out I don't want to play on Xbox 1 anymore, just use it for XBMC.

Also, MS still need to produce Xbox hardware until at least christmas 2006. If not, they simply hand the market to Sony, who will be happily selling PS2s to millions of people (the prime of its life, in terms of Sony actually making money). And then, in 4 or so years time, those same people will have a collection of PS2 games and will be in the market for another console. Hmm, PS3 or Xbox 360?

I am so suspicious about the whole Xbox360 backwards compatibility deal, that I just bought an Xbox1.

I was waiting for the 360, becuase there were all these great games I wanted to play. But MS have given me no confidence that this will be the case.

I can see even Project Gotham 2 not working on the 360, with MS expecting you to buy the latest version.

As for stuff like Panzar Dragoon Orta, Jet Set Radio Future, Otogoi 2, Quantum Redshift and Oddworld Stranger's Wrath it wouldn't surprise me if none of these ever worked on the 360.

After the way MS have behaved with the HD, now not being included in every 360 sold, when right up until 2 weeks ago, they were saying the opposite. How can we trust them on the backward's compatibility issue?

This is the way I see it:

No HDD = No BC (BC should be listed as an extra feature on the Xbox 360 box (non retard pack) IMO)

BC should move along better now that MS decided to bite the bullet and pay for the Nvidia specific features to be emulated

This title is under the radar, and I still can't figure out why...

Battlestations: Midway

Currently scheduled for early 2006 for PC, PS2 and XBOX. And if they delay it for a release on 360, im gonna be pissed.
