How much does the new Last Exile rely on knowledge of the original one? If I've never seen it, am I going to miss out on anything?
Chances are you might since it does appear to be a direct sequel.

I was just telling firehawk that I thought animegaf has brutal hazing. Its apparently a good idea to keep those people out.
It's like we're our own little frat house... place... thing.

Haly

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
AnimeGAF is divided on everything except hazing upstarts and trolls.

Regarding new Last Exile, I don't like the new OP and I'm not really liking what I'm seeing. It has a completely different feel from the first series right from the start.
Different? It's not really that different, I mean the setting is very similar, the world is similar, the ships are similar, etc. The plot is different of course, but also involves nations going to war with airships, so it's also got some obvious similarities.

The main difference would be the nature of the main characters, and that Fam is in a position to directly affect things from the beginning in ways that Claus and Lavie weren't, not to mention that she's not just a good pilot but
also knows how to fight with vanships too
. And I think that's much more a good change than anything else. :)

The hottest character in the original series was Tatiana Wisla.
Who is the new one?
The new who?

As for Tatiana, I wouldn't mind seeing her and Alister again, sure.

Watch the first one. It's a great series.
Indeed it is. As for this one, it's good so far, but I would recommend watching the first one first, certainly.

The main characters, most but not all of the secondary characters, the nations, and the place (maybe) are new, but the show is a sequel, so knowing the original series will definitely help. Still, I do think that they made it approachable enough for someone who didn't see the original series to be able to get into it... it's just that the original series was quite good so you should want to watch it anyway. :)

cajunator said:
Wait, Lavie isn't in it?
Fuck that shit.
Don't worry, Fam is awesome. She'll make you forget that Lavie isn't there, no problem. :) She's kind of like some elements of Claus and Lavie combined, but more awesome and entertaining, and with a good attitude too.

I honestly thought Gaf wouild hate the first one because of the dumb ending.
I'm glad to see you guys are not lame.
That's why I love you.

Are there any flaming weaboos "here" in this thread? Most people around here have been quite realistic in their fanboyism, I've noticed.

Realistic=very angry.

Kemeko DX Final

This was surprisingly epic. Wasn't expecting a fast-paced sword fight with box cutters down a futuristic elevator shaft and that kick used in Gunbuster. Gonna have to check out the manga from where this one leaves off.

Awesome series. If this counts as harem, it's my favorite one yet (barring Sora no Otomoshino, but I haven't seen the anime). If it's only considered "magical girlfriend", this is by far my favorite one. As I said before, it's pretty much the Hare + Guu of one of those genres (same director even). Hilariously lampshades and parodies tropes associated with both those genres and many more while maintaining an interesting overarching plot. Kemeko/M.M. is damn funny and pretty much a slightly more grounded Guu.

Glad I'm still watching Azazel-san (also from the same director) since I'm still in the mood for this type of comedy.

Returning characters?
Don't forget Alvis, who appears in the OP at least, so I expect to see her in the series as well at some point. She's a little older, but not that much.
Now, I might be misremembering but I'm pretty damn sure
Dio went insane and plummeted off an airship to his death in the first one so seeing him show up here with these people of all places kinda makes no sense to me whatsoever
. I'm sure they'll explain it in due time as I'm also sure the explanation is highly likely to be really dumb and shoehorned in.

As for returning characters, Lavie is really the only one that matters.

He did.

I thought so too, but apparently his voice is heard near the end of the original show, so they did put in a hint that he somehow managed to survive... how, though, we have no idea.

No way, I liked most of the main cast in Last Exile. Sure, Lavie was mostly great, but so were Claus (sometimes, not as often as Lavie), Tatiana, Alister, Alvis, Alex Row, his CO/secret princess (I forget her name at the moment), etc.

Some people do dislike it because of the ending, but not everyone.

Cool, they kept the whispery Chapter announcements.
Gisey is cute and is that the same band that did CLoud Age Symphony in the background?
The Vanships look strange.

Chemistry between Gisey/Fam is really cute.
Liking this so far.

Are they still operating on a
chivalry system
? I thought that was really fascinating in the first show.

WTF is that
Dio
?

Never understood that comic.
Oh the lovely maiden's name is Lily. I like you, Lily.
Millia looks like she will be a bitch.

HOLY FUCKBALLS
IT IS DIO!

Fam is the new Lavie. I am ok with this.

Who is the
naked lady of the lake
?
DO like.
That's the elder princess.
And that's a religious ceremony, so that near-nudity stands for purity I'm sure, in the old Japanese tradition. (though I imagine that it's fanservicey wasn't exactly out of the creators' minds either, at least they tried to make it classy.)

and probably crazier than ever!

This show is ok.
So far it is not the shitfest I had feared. Cute characters, good chemistry, same themes, and
DIO.
I will keep watching for sure.

Nice. Been a while since I saw Last Exile. I didn't recognize the song itself.

I LOVE the steampunk in the sky world of Last Exile. It's such a great design.

Great, so if I want to watch this I need to fit another 26-episode series into my schedule somewhere. Ugh... well, it looks like the whole thing is available both subbed and dubbed on Hulu, any preference for which I should watch?

The dub is actualy pretty good IMO. But then again, I liked Utena dubbed.
Seriously though, its not a bad dub at all. Lavie and Claus sound like their characters should and Dio's english voice is pretty great.
Definitely give it a watch first. You will appreciate what's going on in this new series more that way. Not storywise yet from what I see here halfway through episode one, but some of the characters and how the world of Last Exile functions will definitely be better understood if you watch the first series. Not to mention it is just plain awesome. Seriously, you'll love it I'm certain.

Mirai Nikki 2

Yanderelicious.

Kind of a dick move to show 2D Deus in the OP and then use that CG abomination in the show itself. One thing I always asked myself is
where the hell was Minene hiding that damn bike
? It's like videogame inventory systems apply to these characters as well.

I like the little segments at the end of each episode.

Great characters, great music, great ship designs, great pacing, much better CGI,
Dio returns
, and a coherent story. This is sooo fucking GOOD.

It really doesn't.
I like fun characters, a decent story, and great settings. This show has all of that, plus steampunk and machine porn. I'm getting the same feeling of excitement I had watching Last Exile for the first time. Fam is as fearless and crazy as Lavie was and my favorite character returning just takes the cake.

You just don't like Last Exile enough. The show is great.

I think Fam's quite likely even more fearless and crazy than Lavie, really. :)

But yeah, Last Exile Fam definitely has all of those things, and it makes for a good combination.

Ben-To Ep.2

The level of seriousness that the characters demonstrate is perfectly contradictory to the actual plot of the show.
I know, that's definitely part of what makes the show so good. There's this massive disconnect between the characters' words and actions, and anything that makes sense... it might sound odd for those who haven't seen it, but that the characters take such a stupid idea so seriously really does help make the show better.

That is what I love most about the episode. There are layers and layers of ridiculous depth.
Indeed, for sure.

I was! I'm even quoted in the OP.
Really? You must have been one of the few then...

I am hoping that they keep this focus (75% Battle 25% Harem) throughout the shows run. But you are right that it would fit the typical conventions of the genre to ramp up the amount of girls and fan service.
Yeah, I agree. The mix they have works quite well, I hope they keep it. Basically I just don't want something like Dog Days' non-combat episodes, which were nowhere nearly as good as the combat ones.

That was good. Didn't get too far into the first episode but this one kept me interested all throughout.

Really liked
Caster's summoning - how Uryuu's pursuit of the occult mirrored that of the man he summoned, and the general brutality of it.
Great finish to the episode as well.

Upon hearing that chibi-Ika begins here I skipped to this episode. OMG Squid girl speaking engrish is the cutest fucking thing I have ever seen.
