2013 High-Res PC Screenshot Thread of Let the JPEG Die Already

I've been waiting all year for ep 2 to go on sale REALLY want to play through the whole game again with this mod...(HL2-Ep1-Ep2) I will run it at 720p I have a 5870 8gb ram will I be able to even play it nicely...

It's nowhere near hard to run for current cards, you should have no problems running it and I'd assume at 1080p with some dips in fps. (I don't know AMD/ATI tech, but I could run CM with a GTX 9800, so you shouldn't worry.)

Make sure to back up your GCF files for HL2 series if you have access to them. If not, then PM me and we can find a way to get you set up. However, FAKEFACTORY says that the Cinematic Mod 2013 Alpha will release soon and will install the necessary GCF files, so you might not need to worry about them.

http://cinematicmod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=2272

He lists the necessary GCF's, and states to make sure to backup the GCF for your language as well.

Why are they changing the format files to the games.. I dont even have HL2 or Ep1 installed

Steampipe.

Supposed to make things easier, but for all the mods that relied on the old methods of grabbing things from the GCF files, it makes life a nightmare. Once they release the updated SDK, then modders can more easily retrofit their mods to the new system, and FAKEFACTORY mentions he is thinking about it, but only time will tell. Like I said, wait for the 2013 version of CM and if you still need the GCF's just contact me. We'll figure something out.

Hey-o, Imgur is disallowed in this thread, and JPEGs are only allowed when used correctly.

Imgur compresses images and makes them lower quality, which goes against the purpose of the thread.

You can just upload the PNG's to a site like Flickr, Sta.sh, Abload.de, or Minus because they won't convert or compress your images.

If you do want to use JPEG's, you've gotta make sure they're saved at maximum quality!

You can find details about how to do that here.

Sorry, didn't think this through enough I guess. The steam screenshot tool seems to produce less than maximum quality jpegs. I am not sure how to edit in this case (delete images?), but I at least switched to abload.de as adviced.

There should be an option to have Steam store uncompressed images in a second folder. Then just resize/uploade the images from that folder in either PNG or 100% quality JPEG to a host. There are quite a few hosts listed in the OP.

Some quick shots to test how removing vignette gets rid of the "shaded" tiles effect when using tiledshot with the skybox visible. See here for how to remove vignette.

Now that I've been looking at the sky in these Chivalry pictures a bit closer, I've found that some of the clouds with smoke effects are showing banding that isn't there in the originals. I've been using Lancroz2 for the filter and on a whim tried bicubic. Bicubic looks to get rid of the banding I was seeing, what's the best filter to use generally? Or would this change from picture to picture?

Change it per picture. Lanczos2 does have terrible banding, god knows why.

The Lanczos filter reconstruction kernel for a=2 adds somewhat heavier ringing than the one where a=3.
So you get some nice sharpening to offset the blurring effect that comes with downsampling when using Lanczos2.
However, in some images, these artefacts become quite noticeable and lead to banding. That's why I mainly use Lanczos3.
In general I prefer the reduction of aliasing over the preservation of sharp edges.

Well, all this talk about banding has made me think of Kentucky Route Zero,
where I at first sought to find ways to remove the banding that is omnipresent in the game.
In the end -- unsuccesfully -- I decided to just embrace the banding and even exaggerate
it in some cases. As soon as I stopped minding it, the banding sort of transformed and
started adding to the general esthetic.

Uncompressed because... well, banding! (I could have used Mitchell resampling maybe -- well, too late.)

Uh. Just some quick Borderlands 2. So the new character's skill (Krieg) is a melee buzzsaw swinging frenzy. With a ranged throw attack. Also puts a very heavy post processing vignette type thing on your screen. All in all, not my playstyle. I think I prefer Axton and Zero. But I'll stick with him.

Here are some screens of that effect.

Thanks guys, appreciate the insight. After testing a number of filters with my image, bicubic seems to be the best, not too much blur and reduced banding in the clouds/smoke.

Midhras, you're right about those Kentucky shots, the patterns in the banding do add to the picture. A nice contrast to the silhouette style.

Oh, and here's another cow. This girl was on one of the dueling maps. Can you spot her?

Still loving it, One3rd! You're catching some really nice model shading in some of those, as when a character does not have any, they can look pretty bleh. You inspired me to go back to some Chivalry as well, but the one quick session so far only produced this image. Its a shot thats been posted by folks before, but this time I got it dead center and I find it worth posting again :P

I need to start doing some tildeshots. Perhaps we can combine forces to setup an epic action shot. We just need a third player. (and fucking functional way to join a game with friends. Picking the same server is the only surefire way I've found, and often the same ones dont' even show up. Yargh)

Chivalry is the best game evar.

Finally got it!

Managed to mod the Nvidia 320.14 drivers to work with my GTX 780!! YES.

Much thanks to Alo81 for helping me figure out that it was my Drivers that were killing gaming for me!

Awesome, I loved all of your previous Tomb Raider shots, especially this one

Looking forward to seeing more of what your 780 can pump out with TressFx enabled

All these Half Life shots made me take some of my own.

"Impulse 200" gets rid of gun.
"Fov #" Sets the fov to whatever you put for #.
"Hidehud 1" Hides the Heads Up Display.

There's plenty more.

Nice shots, but the hud kind of distracts from them. I haven't even started getting shots from Black Mesa though... I'm gonna lose a lot of my free time when I do, though.

Thanks! It's such a joy to screenshot in!

Very nice. I've tried this one as well as the dome of that cathedral is impressive. Every time though I can't seen to line it up and have this rope or something dangling down ruining the shot. Looks like you got this one dead on.

If you do use the tiledshots make sure to remove vignette as that will overlay each tile with a faint shadow. Took me awhile to figure out what was going on but when you think about how the tiledshot command copies the UI it makes sense. I also just realized that you can remove this from the console as well. Type "enablevignette 0" at the console and it will disable, 1 enables it again.

Definitely up for some action shots, trying to time these when you don't know what the other players are doing is a pain. And when it takes 15-20s for each tiledshot to process, if you haven't captured the shot you wanted it's gone forever.

Not an amazing shot by any means and I'm too lazy to shop out the reticle but I'm just happy the game runs at 60 FPS on this mission :D Nice lighting though, the way the lighthouse's beam actually affects your character is neat.

Edit: To make it two

The way the light illuminates the smoke is also neat :D

I think you'll find people really love depth of field. Tis why so many people are posting cut scene shots from games, rather than from actual gameplay.

I love depth of field as well. Maybe not so much grain though =)

Personally I like DOF in movies and cutscenes but detest it in actual gameplay. My eyes always try to compensate for the blur they know shouldn't be there.

I think cutscenes are posted more due to the fact that the hard work, composition, has already been done for you. And in games that don't allow the freedom to move around without a hud, the cinematic cutscenes allow for clean, interesting shots to be taken. The downside is that everyone else is taking those same shots...speaking of which. I 've finally gotten around to playing Bioshock Infinite and I'm quite liking it. Hopefully these aren't too generic.
