Prok to AK47: "I know where your family lives. Since I'm nice guy, I'm gonna give you extraordinary $3.1mil. What do you say? We have deal? You have beautiful wife. It would be shame if something happened to her."

"Look at my new signing," says a New Russian to his colleague. "I bought him for 3.1 million dollars per annum from the agent over there."

"You got yourself conned," says the other. "You could have paid twice as much for the same player just across the street."

Keeping Kobe for a few seasons with the #1 pick could go either way, no expectations to win immediately with a young gun, so why not keep Kobe unless he starts some serious ish.

His contract will be up by the time we get Wiggins...he'll most likely get a no trade clause in his new deal tho

It seems to me he's pressuring management to give him an extension this season. So they'll have to make a decision soon.

intangibles, motherfucker
That's some revisionist stuff. The fan base was pretty split between having KB's back and being mad at him for not handling the situation better.

i never said the fanbase wasnt split. Where kobe is now is way higher than where Shaq was when that shit was going down after the loss to the pistons

Damn, Nets are looking like a contender now. They're the most injury prone team in the league probably, but aside from that they are a top 3 team in the conference and definitely miles better than the Knicks.

The splitting of maybe the greatest 1-2 punch in basketball history is always revisionist with the purple nation

It's not that people weren't upset but even during the horrible seasons it was all good

I agree with you, people were alright with dealing with it cause Kobe was amazing and it was easy to see a future beyond Kobe/Shaw with just Kobe. Kobe could be on the losing end this time if things get rough between him and a early 20s juggernaut.

Yea but Kobe will be in the Shaq position this go round.

He has never coached before and that team has a two year window. It makes no sense to hire him right after he retires.

He's there to manage egos and keep Deron happy, they've got Lawrence Frank running the offense and John Welch running the defense.

Why are people acting like AK47 was signed to some sneaky deal? Everyone on the Heat roster took a pay cut, except Joel. I say good on Prok and King. It kinda makes up for the luxury tax hell they've put themselves in. PEACE.

That Nets team is going to fuck shit up as long as it's healthy. It's got too much talent, and is theoretically too deep. Even a rookie coach can't blow this. As much as he's a rookie coach, he's also Jason Fucking Kidd. He played with or against every single one of these guys, and aside from being a drunk wife-beater I don't think he's got any beef with the players on his team. In fact, given that he's Jason Fucking Kidd, I'd wager they respect him greatly.

You figure chemistry might be an issue. You figure age/injury might be an issue. But aside from that, the team is balanced offensively both in starters and bench guys, and should defend well too. Deron's unhappiness can't even ruin things, because no matter how much of a diva or star he wants to be, he isn't yet more relevant even today than his coach, or KG/Pierce. KG alone will likely shut that shit down if it threatens the ability of that team to win.

In conclusion, why can't Dolan make some back-channel illegal money laundering type FA deals? Goddamn.

[EDIT: Nobody of relevance on the Heat roster took a paycut. They all got max deals with no tax. You think Bosh would net more money *not* on the Heat? Or Wade? Or LBJ? Stop.]

AK47 isn't Bosh Wade or LBJ

He is like Ray Allen or Shane

So point stands perfectly

And Dolan is a man-child which is why he can't get shit done

They all took paycuts. The Big3 all took less than the max they could make.

Each player took $15 million less over the life of the contract to sign with Miami, but the deals came with a caveat.

Miller and Haslem took less money than they were offered to go elsewhere. Haslem, in particular, has sacrificed over $20M in his last two contracts. I don't feel like hunting down the Lebatard piece on that. Rio declined bigger offers to stay here. Battier, Birdman, Ray and Shard all signed here on smaller offers than they got elsewhere. Cole and Jarvis are on really small contracts, though I can't say for sure if either could have made more money, given their experience. Other than Joel, who is probably making fair market value, everyone took a paycut. Even JJ took a paycut, though he was also receiving two paychecks from the team as part of a buyout.

I don't think there's anything shady about a guy taking a paycut late in his career to win a championship. I mean, AK47 added to that roster makes them a serious contender now. He's made enough money he can try to chase a ring. PEACE.

Could those players have made more money after tax than they could've elsewhere? That's what I want to know. I know they could've grossed more.
Also, I don't care about Shard (washed up ring chaser), Battier (ring chaser), Birdman (suspected child pornographer, wasn't going to get more), Chalmers (RFA, wasn't made any other offers).

Mike Miller, Haslem...those guys, okay. Ray Allen? I'd lean towards washed up or ring chaser, but I have too much respect for his game/relevance in the league for that. They've done enough and made enough money where I can respect their choice to ring chase.

Depends. They only avoid state tax in home games and road games in tax-free states. So a bit more than half their income is free of the x% state tax you pay in that income bracket. I have no idea what percent states take anymore. It's been years since I last lived in NY, and that it probably one of the worst states. I don't think it's more than 10%, and for the Big3, $15M is more than 10% of their gross contracts.

So I would say yes. There are other cost savings though, like cost of living. It's very low in Miami, relative to other parts of the country. But it's hard to quantify stuff like that, so I'm just going on what the contract discounts are. PEACE.

“I just want to teach him a couple of easy moves," Shaquille O'Neal said on a conference call promoting "Grown Ups 2" of the Sacramento Kings troubled young big man, DeMarcus Cousins.

Shaq says he has not reached out to Cousins yet, but feels like he can help the former Kentucky standout realize his NBA potential.

"The game is 60 percent mental and 40 percent physical ability. He has great ability, he has great moves, but I’m going to teach him some surefire moves about how he can get buckets and little things like that. I think a guy like DeMarcus can average 24 points a game if he put his mind to it."

I remember this getting mentioned a while back... Shaq still hasn't even reached out to DMC? Then please stfu already.

Nets owner gives no fucks about the luxury tax. I hope they at least get to the conference semis this coming season.

Also, just want to share that I have a job offer which only lasts until the 15th but I still have another pending application with one company I really like which would last until some time next week. Talked to the company offering me a job yesterday and they said they would not extend their job offer's deadline. I feel like I'm gonna get Iggy'd.

Nets lifted themselves off the treadmill.

Currently they are the true hope of re-defeating Lord Zedd and the Heat in my mind. The Knicks aren't powerful enough yet. OKC can't do it either, and the Spurs won't be able to repeat what they just did again.

They aren't beating the heat at all. Pacers and Bulls have a better chance.
