So I don't usually take TV critics, or criticism aggregates, all that seriously, but on Metacritic right now True Detective season 2 has a 61, Ballers has a modestly impressive 65, and The Brink has a generous 51 average score. Just to remind everyone that this is what we've got on HBO now in the absence of a third season of Enlightened.

Time for HBO to jump on the old shows revival train and annouce Carnivale S3 :)

The Brink is strange, because I actually think there's a decent premise somewhere deep down in there, but all Jack Black's scenes in the pilot were basically "lol bindi bindi u paki.... lol do u like eat dogs??? u terrist!!!! hahahah pakistan!!!!! ownt!!!! oh man...." and I have not idea why they thought that was going to play well. The whole script felt like it needed a major tone pass. I'm surprised they didn't develop it much further.

Hmm, that's tough. Scripted TV shows focusing on food are nearly nonexistent, probably because that hole is already filled with reality television and cooking shows. The last show I remember that prominently featured a chef as a character was Treme; great show, but I'd be lying if I said that Kim Dickens' character was the focus.

As for movies, I really liked the indie movie Dinner Rush. The Danish film Babette's Feast is worth a look too, and features some legitimate culinary porn.
Thanks.
After they announced that new AMC show about two friends opening a restaurant, i decided to google some shows and movies about food, which is how i came across Kitchen Confidential.
There is an interesting thing i noticed, you watch some TV Show or movie and then want to watch something with similar theme/story/setting but then when you start looking, you realise that there are not a lot of similar things.

For food-themed shows anime is pretty much your only option. Bartender is absolutely brilliant and Yakitate!! Japan, Ristorante Paradiso, Antique Bakery are all fine picks too.

Everyone is watching that Soma show. lol

If you expand to jdrama, there's also Nobunaga no Chef.

On the J-dorama front, there's also Osen and My Little Chef, both of which I'd strongly recommend. Marumo no Ikete and Kekkon Shinai have a tertiary plotline with restaurants, and are well worth watching as well (especially Marumo, which is excellent).

Given that the second season of The Comeback ended perfectly, I don't know what they could do for a third. I guess they could Silicon Valley it and have her fail again and totally resetting any progress she made.

It's not terrible. The book is better.

The book and show don't really have much in common. The book is an autobiography and the show basically is "wacky shit happens in a restaurant". That said, it has a really great cast and I found it a lot of fun.

As for other food related shows; Lenny Henry had a show called Chef! and Richard Griffiths had a show called Pie In the Sky. Speaking of pies, I suppose Pushing Daisies could be mentioned as well.

I believe it was alleged to be vaguely...loosely...not really based upon the Anthony Bourdain book of the same name.

I remember watching a few episodes because I was obsessed with food and cooking at the time, and finding it completely mediocre.
It pulled a lot more details from the book than, say, Suburgatory did from its book.

Major changes included whitewashing the kitchen crew, keeping all the focus on that one Pino restaurant, taking out the variety of other dumb owner stories, sanitizing the stories in general...

It was cast well and slightly amusing, but yeah, "mediocre" is very fair.

Anyone here watch The Comedians or Happyish? I know both got bad reviews initially but did either of them ever improve?

I like Happyish, which is pretty oppressive in its town. Just pure pessimistic Jewish existential dread black comedy. Hahn and Coogan are fun. It reminds me of an angry, negative version of I Heart Huckabees or something, or like Woody Allen if he was less worried and more bitter.

The Comedians I watched a few episodes of and it never clicked with me. I'll probably check it out at some point, but it basically felt like it was doing the Curb / Louie type heightened-version-of-reality model, but the people involved were less interesting.

Wow James Patterson's Zoo is so boring and Im only 20 minutes into the episode 1, though I assume it wasnt exactly going to be aiming for a continuation since I think its just a one book thing.

The only thing I can say about The Comedians is that it's at least better than the Hasselhoff show. They tried to push a chemistry between Josh and Billy as two generations of comedians coming together, but it never really felt like it went anywhere.
If The Comeback is a 11/10, then The Comedians is like a 4 or 5/10.

Also, anyone listen to Extra Hot Great? I don't know why they continue to watch/review Under the Dome when they hate it so much. I guess people like to read their recaps of the show or something, but yeesh. lol

Sounds like a solid SKIP to me.

Thanks fellas!

I feel bad that there are people on earth not watching Lifetime's UnReal.

Is it really all that?

Huh, the reason why I skipped it is because I have no interest in The Bachelor. Then again, there's so much TV already that you could watch...

Honestly, it's not good for Lifetime, it's good period. It's really smart, it has a lot to say, the subject matter is original, great cast. It's astounding something that good is coming out of Lifetime (no offence ivy!!!)

Oh wait, Extant really came back? I thought it bombed hard.

It kind of did, but between the streaming deal and the international deals, CBS has repeatedly bragged they are making money off the show before it even airs. It's the same with Under the Dome, so expect them to be around until those deals run out, no matter the ratings.

For what is worth, Extant beat all records for cable in its premiere in Spain. People seem to like Halle Berry outside the US :p

Yeah I really like happyish, although it is unremmitingly bleak and punishing. It is funny though, just in that laughing at how depressing the world is way.

I actually watched the first episode and liked it, but Lifetime is just so far off my radar that I never think about it much less tune in.

They did a REALLY great job with the whole "Television for women" campaign that I've never felt like Lifetime was for me (not that there's anything wrong with that... it's the same feeling I have with things like CMT).

I hope ABC will cancel The Whispers soon. It is slowly descending into a hate watch territory for me. Had a decent start too, but the things these kids get away with is just plain ridiculous.

Critics absolutely have not liked Happyish. I don't really have much of a refutation to what they say: it is over-stuffed, it sort of flirts with a lot of ideas, it's clearly going for an existential and socio-political critique, a lot of it is barely muted anger, people talk in monologues, the dialogue is artificial, nothing really happens, etc.

But I think it works anyway because I think it has an interesting point of view and it doesn't dumb itself down for the audience and it just feels like a dark and personal project. I tend to like neurotic anxious jewish comedy stuff anyway. Maybe a lot of it depends on your predisposition towards the world. I feel like the show's point of view comes pretty close to "let the whole world burn down" and I find that pretty interesting even in its bleakness.

Good call on UnReal. I just watched the first one and thought it was quite good. Will definitely keep watching. One of the reasons I love this and the other general TV threads on here. Always get tipped off to some shows I overlooked.
