Nope, big ice makes it much easier for shitty players to play defense. Collapse into a box, and force the other team to skate a thousand feet to even get around you or pass it a hundred feet across the ice to your teammate is also can't get around the box.
Pros: easier zone entry, more room for play execution, increases defensive attack from the slot, less shot deflections/blocks
Cons: easier zone exits (especially with clearance plays), makes wall plays more difficult, adds to player exertion, defense would be less inclined to pinch... cross ice one timers become much less effective. Makes goalie screening more difficult.
There would be a lot more "clean" plays and a less garbage goals. Game is far less exciting.
If NHL ever wants to increase scoring, they just have to make offsides passes only. Eliminates blue line bunching, exposes the trap, increases PP pressure, removes a lot of blown plays and significantly speeds up the game. Best thing they could ever do.
