I don't understand how a panel of hockey experts end up fucking up player selection. It doesn't take an astrophysicist to realize that Kunitz doesn't deserve to be on the team over guys like Giroux. Waste of ice time
It's old school hockey minds. Same reason they would much rather have a much shittier D men in Bouwmeester play then have your Norris winner play on the left side. Babcock is coaching in a safe way, and coaching to not lose. In tournaments like these, that's a good first class ticket out of the tourney.

They need to stop worrying so much about which players will gel together the best, and instead just make the best players gel together. Because they should, being the best and all.

They fuck up because they try to be smart with it. Their is probably also some pressure to put certain players there. I am sure Crosby had some say in getting Kunitz on the team.

Well that's the management fucking up.

Canada could easily win without Crosby and Kunitz and if that wasn't made clear that's on them.

Especially if Stamkos was healthy :(

I imagine it went like this at the selection meeting.

So the top two scorers in the NHL in the four seasons since the last Olympics are Canadian. Should we take either of them in our top 14 forwards?

Nah.

The greatest scorer of all time? Leads the league in points, goals, assists?

LOL LET'S USE RAY BOURQUE FOR THE SHOOTOUT! :D

Is much shittier D just code for "doesn't have more points"?

10 shutouts already this tournament.
Switzerland games... 3 total goals in 3 games.

It amazes me that some people still think the large ice surface would increase scoring in the NHL. A myth that never dies. I'm grateful that it will never happen in the NHL.

I think over the course of an 82 game schedule it would greatly increase scoring. In this shorter format with players adjusting it's just not gonna happen. Plus these are best on best not a Salary Cap team with 4 lines of Stars and Scrubs.

If you think Bouwmeester is anywhere close to Subban then I don't know what to say.
Bouwmeester's a pretty damn good shutdown D.

Subban's a pretty damn good offensive D.

You're out of your mind if you think Bouwmeester is a much shittier defenseman. The only D I would put Subban over on that roster is Vlasic or Hamhuis.

Stop bitching about the more than capable Defense and worry about the Offense.
That's exactly why Subban should be in for Bouwmeester.....same with MSL for Kunitz.

The only guys who should be playing above Subban are Keith, Weber, and Doughty

Over the 2012 and 2013 seasons, no Team Canada defense candidate was on the ice for fewer goals against per 20 minutes of even-strength ice time
What a defensive liability.

I just hope our Captain,
the guy that's supposed to set the example for the other players, just gets it done.

No excuses, just gets it done, not just in the final play,
but carries us to the Gold Medal game.

He has it in him, but as long as he's pampered,
he's truly going to believe it's not him that has to elevate his game.

Plays the right way so
That the boys in red
Can bring the gold

The Autumn flower blooms
At a rapid pace
PPG
Intangible, at best

The evening water, cleanses
As the frozen water, commences
Gives way to blades and strokes
Not producing, but eternal
O Canada

I'd much rather have Pietrangelo-Bouwmeester than Subban playing on his offside with any of Weber or Doughty.

Subban should be the 7th D and PP specialist. Besides, it's not like our D needs any more offense. I'd put PK on the 2nd PP unit with Weber.

Players like Duchene, Bergeron, Carter, Marleau, MSL can play on wing in their off positions, but the recent Norris winner can't play on his off side? Please. Subban would be on the top pairing of any other team in the tournament. The team needs offense, how can you say we don't need anymore offense even if it's from our D? Canada needs all the offense it can get, regardless of where it comes from.

So Russia gonna need to go through Norway, Fins, and Sweden to get to the Gold medal game. hmmm. Not bad I guess.

Also kind of disappointed US/Canada matchup will now be in the semis. That is a game I would rather see for the gold medal. oh well.

Nope, big ice makes it much easier for shitty players to play defense. Collapse into a box, and force the other team to skate a thousand feet to even get around you or pass it a hundred feet across the ice to your teammate is also can't get around the box.

I'm already tired of all the "Miracle" comparisons. That was the biggest sham of the 60's to late 80's, that the Soviets were allowed their "amateur" players, but Canada was shafted because almost 90% of the top players in the country were playing for the NHL or WHA or not considered amateurs. The Soviets weren't unbeatable as the Summit Series showed.

Agree to disagree.

Pros: easier zone entry, more room for play execution, increases defensive attack from the slot, less shot deflections/blocks

Cons: easier zone exits (especially with clearance plays), makes wall plays more difficult, adds to player exertion, defense would be less inclined to pinch... cross ice one timers become much less effective. Makes goalie screening more difficult.

There would be a lot more "clean" plays and a less garbage goals. Game is far less exciting.

If NHL ever wants to increase scoring, they just have to make offsides passes only. Eliminates blue line bunching, exposes the trap, increases PP pressure, removes a lot of blown plays and significantly speeds up the game. Best thing they could ever do.

Increasing "scoring" is a stupid phrase imo. To really acheive anything noticeable would require a dramatic size reduction in goaltender equipment, and/or increasing net size. The former is an okay solution and the latter is stupid. I guess dramatically increasing the number of penalties called would do it it, but who wants to watch that?

The real excitement comes from any scoring chance, and there are plenty of scoring chances per game, goaltenders are just very good.

That's a dramatic change from the way the game has been played since nearly its inception and I'm not sure how I feel about it. I'd have to see it in action to really get a handle on it, but it changes the game a little too much to keep me comfortable.

Regarding Crosby's ineffective play so far, most of his goals in the NHL are within 10 feet of the net. With opposing teams in this tournament opting to collapse towards their goalie, this defensive strategy counters how he usually gets his goals. Instead of finding ways to get around this type of defense, Crosby has opted to attempt too many blind passes towards the front of the net.

Yeah - goals themselves are WAY overrated, in terms of excitement. It's the chances, as you said. A string of great goalie saves is far more exciting than watching a slap shot from the blue line find the back of the net.

We're 0 for 3 in the group play and we still get to play Russia for a place in the quarter finals. We've already shown that we're not good enough for the play offs, why give us another chance? Just give the place to Russia
