300: RIse of an Empire reviews

Color me surprised as well, I thought it would get universally panned. It looks almost like a straight to DVD sequel despite having Eva Green

Kind of hated the ending. Plot was paper thin, endless freedom dialogue was tiresome, and the Strike Back guy had very little charisma.

The 3D was well used; not blatant but noticeable.

Eva Green was excellent. Over the top, deadly, and seductive.

This was a jingoistic, racist, sexist, rapey, lowest common denominator, disgusting disaster of a film. AND I FUCKING LOVED IT.

It's clearly as flawed as any film you'll ever see, whether because of the historical inaccuracies or because they literally (spoilers ahead!)
use an oil-dumping barge and suicide bombers to contrast with our blue-caped, freedom-shouting heroes
, I'm not really sure why. I get all the criticism, the campiness, unfortunate historicity of the thing, and everything else one might be offended by. I just happen to love that sort of thing. 6/10.

See it in IMAX 3D or don't go.

Really enjoyed it. If you're looking for historical accuracy or whatever don't bother, but if you just want a fun popcorn movie this is a good time. Same stylized action / slowmo fight scenes as the original with tons of excessive violence and limbs being cut off. I didn't watch in 3D but the action scenes seem like they'd be fun with all the blood splattering and flying spears and whatnot...

Naval battles were cool.

Eva Green is awesome and steals the movie. There is one scene where she
decapitates a dude and starts making out with his detached head
. She plays such a good villain.

The
horse
should be an honorary member of the Avengers!

Favorite line of the movie
"You fight much harder than you f*ck"
.

Greeks were massively dull in this.

Eva Green is pretty much the main character. She's freaking badass in this, and I could drown in her eyes...

Yeah if you like Eva Green, watch it.

I didn't get to finish the movie because the power went out in the theater, but what I saw was good. It ended somewhere around the "avenge him" part.

The fight scene at the very beginning was fucking amazing. Way better than anything in the first 300. Shame the rest of them (from what I saw) don't live up to that one, or the other fights in the original.

Eva Green is the new Gerald Butler, confirmed.

This was okay. As I expected, the film is a bit monotonic. Battle, battle, speech, battle, battle, and so on. But the main lead and Eva Green had a rather good chemistry and it was nice to see them spar. The ending was kind of poetic in that regard.

But yeah, this film should have been called "Artemisia vs the Studs of Greece". The story was mostly about hers and in some ways I kinda want her to win.

Very very good film. Better than I thought it would be, Eva was superb. Bad ass and not your typical female film character, she fits into the 300 male dominant world very well.

Damn, does it set up for a 3rd very nicely.

Totally enjoyed it. The blood definitely seems even MORE stylistic than in the past, which I kind of liked. Felt more like a comic come to life.

SPOILER
The whole thing with the horse is absolutely my favorite part of both movies. Well, that and Eva Green's breasts. So nice...

Some extremely well choreographed scenes, can feel the testosterone on screen. My appetite is massive for the next in the series, shits going down,
Now the big dudes are called in,

Bit with the horse was my least favorite, same with the guys I watched it with, the way it jumped out of the water and back on board, I reasoned with my self, it was likely the only method of defeating those private bodyguards, they were lethal

I just thought that the way he said something about sending them to hell then is suddenly on a black horse, plowing through people and fire and sea to get to Artemisia's ship, and then he fights through all the Immortals so it is just him and her...all as one big, continuous shot...just worked so well for me. I'm not impressed on a technical sense like I would be for the shot in Goodfellas that went on so long, but I'm impressed because it was just so fucking awesome.

Don't forget that moment where both Themistocles and Artemisia lock onto each other from across the battle, with epic camera zoom in and all. My favorite moment right there.

Her bodyguard were awesome, they had this brute sense about them, they were huge, but at the same time agile, slick and well chorographed and looked bad-ass with their masks. Would have liked to see them tear through more guys with Artemisia acting like a ninja, scene was spectacular.

Saw it last night with some friends. It is what it is. Some decent action, a lot of cheese and ridiculousness. Green was fun. The new director did a decent job of imitating Snyder. And yeah,
that horse made the movie.

The main problems I have is that none of the Greeks were nearly as charismatic as the Spartans were in the first movie. I guess they were supposed to be less badass than the Spartans, but still, it's the rousing one liners and yelling that you come to see. I was very disappointed that they
got David Wenham back and then squandered him on three short scenes. I'm guess he shot all of his stuff in one day. He has such a cool voice, and carried the over-the-top quality of 300 just as much as Gerard Butler did. I can't believe they had Lena Headey do the narrations, when Wenham is right there.

Also kind of surprised that this had so much
sequel hooking
. When the first movie ended at the Battle of Platea, I thought it was a decent stopping point. It showed how their numbers grew and how they could take on the Persians, and it sort of leads the rest to imagination. It's a logical conclusion that could have been (And was obviously intended to be) a resolution to a self-contained story.
This ending was not that. It felt like a straight-up sequel hook, reminding me the ending to the recent Hunger Games movie.

I was quite happy with the ending, I thought it had its own mini-style boss serving, in the ending of the naval fleet, why not expand on the world and show us what has to come next in the inevitable MASSIVE scale land battle, now we have the spartins on board, its going to be all out war with Xerxes with his evil, war elephants and 1 million warriors, I as you, hope they give us a proper Spartan ending with theme at the helm and Greece behind them....The next film has alot to live up too, given its pacing but this movie, I really enjoyed
Eva Green's performance really made this movie for me, pure insanity in a good way.
She was an awesome fighter, great skills, awesome acting, very manipulative and an erotic biatch when she wanted to be, was like softcore porn in 3d

Just got back from it, uh... Eva Green was dope. Everything else was fucking horrible.

The male protagonist was Leonidas light on his best day, I didn't give a shit about the Greeks by halfway through, hell not even the Spartans. This was Eva's movie

I'll catch the next one on Redbox.

I really liked it. Eva Green was amazing.

I absolutely loved the awe everyone gave the Spartans. Every time they were mentioned it was like "We need the help of the Spartans" "The Spartans died! What are we to do?" and so on. So gud.

I was hoping they were going to fudge with history a bit and
somehow make the son of the dead best friend become Alexander the Great and lead the newly born Greek Empire against Xerxes in the next movie. I missed his name near the beginning and only heard them call him "Son" or "boy" so I figured one of the last scenes might be them finally calling him Alexander. I was wrong

but how it ended up is perfectly fine with me.

I've just watched it. Eva Green really made this movie - she was a great and memorable villain. Themistocles on the other hand, while sexy as fuck, was a rather unremarkable character. He was a good strategist, I admit that, but he really wasn't a good leader and wasn't very memorable. His speeches were poor, he lacked charisma and, at least to me, it seemed as if he was fighting mainly due to his weird obsession; he really wasn't able to convince neither me nor my friends that he is fighting for a reason and that he is (somehow) able to lead his people to victory. Leonidas was different - even though he only had 300 soldiers with him, you could feel his strength, his power, confidence and motivation. During the final battle my friend even admitted that she felt no reason to support Themistocles, that she was rooting for Artemisia the entire time.

I also didn't like the ending.
After all the build-up the final battle seemed disappointing and the cut at the end was too quick and abrupt. Artemisia also died to easy; not a very satisfying end of such a fine character.

Visually the movie was great. Thanks to constant slow-motion scenes (or even almost static scenes) and zoom-in/zoom-out shots the 3D was really effective while not being intrusive. I also like how different color schemes were used between scenes in Sparta (saturated colors, gold and red theme) and Athens (toned-down colors, blue tones).

Overall, I liked the movie, but the first one was definitely better.

Just saw it, I would rate it around the same as the first one although the original I would give props for having a novel look and style... Rise of an Empire just dialed everything to 11.

The use of lighting bloom is ridiculous in this movie. It's everywhere, even more prominent than in 300. You can almost feel the green screen behind the characters at the time. A lot of slow mo as well and the blood effects looked even more unreal than in 300.

That said this movie does do some things better. It did better in creating that big picture element and it made events more epic because of it. The world building is also a bit better... you get to see a bit of Greece/Athens, Persia and more character development in Xerxes and Artemesia.

Speaking of which Artemesia stole the show and just chewed the scenery around her (not that there was much to chew given everything had a very monochromatic scheme). I think the main guy did a better job than I originally thought he would but he still was no Gerard Butler. I liked the contrast between Spartans and Athenians, even in their cape color. I also liked the story telling as it had events way before 300, during 300 and after 300.

There were some well choreographed scenes including a couple of no cut action sequences (one at the beginning and one at the end). I enjoyed the naval battles more than I thought I would, they had a more strategic element to them.

Character dialogue is hammy as always and development is low for everyone except maybe Artemesia and Xerxes... about the same as 300 really.

Bottom line is that if you liked 300 you will like this... if you hated 300 you will hate this too. They can actually make a 300 super movie editing in both movies together... would actually make for a better movie overall because Rise of an Empire painted the Spartans with such glory that it made me want to see 300 again! Compared to the Spartans the Athenians looked like just average soldiers.

I doubt there will be a sequel. At least a historicaly accurate one.Movie was great, far better than the first IMO.
