36 minutes of The Order 1886 gameplay (offscreen)

I'll repeat what someone said last week.

How can people say they dislike this game and then go crazy about Uncharted?

How are they at all alike? They are completely different in tone and presentation, and Uncharted has very different movement, traversing mechanics and weaponry. It's like saying Gears of War and Uncharted are the same thing.

Because they are differently designed games despite both being entries in the rather broad "cinematic TPS" genre.

For example, Uncharted doesn't have you fucking around with little lockpicking mini-games of various sorts. Maybe that's an important distinction for some people. Uncharted has more open combat arenas some of the time. From what we've seen of The Order, it's a little more constricted. (Yes, Shinobi says it has more open areas, but I'm talking about what people have experienced so far). Uncharted has lots of 3-dimensional traversal, The Order doesn't. Uncharted has a different overall tone. Uncharted is a globetrotting adventure, The Order is (probably) not. I could go on but I hope I don't need to.

edit: damn it Pai Pai!

Looked good but I think the QTE combat is kind of pointless. I can't see why they didn't just make it proper combat that doesn't require a button prompt. And does anyone enjoy lock picking mini games? This is another mechanic that I think detracts from the game rather than enhances it. The combat in the Uncharted 4 demo looked so much more fun than this. Too late now I guess, that's the way the game is going to be.

Well they do things a bit different. ND sees cutscenes as a last resort kinda thing. If they really want to show the character's emotions or if it just doesn't work in gameplay, they will use a custscene. Possibly also for pacing. Most dialogue is duringt actively controlling the game. This is a big difference allready. Then there are the QTE-s and minigames.

But i like both, so maybe someone could answer this better.

Thing is, it's hard for an action game to be primarily cinematic. Takes one out the immersion aspect when you're shooting an enemy/monster then all of a sudden a cut scene triggers out of no where.

Then you're looking at it wrong like most people are. They already said from the jump it's a cinematic game with action moments, not vice versa. If you don't like that combo they'll never convince you to enjoy it.

I am looking forward to these larger battles shinobi's hinting at though.

For the most part I'm sold on The Order, but the AI looks so bad in spots. Go to 23:25 to see an enemy sprinting in place against a cover object before being killed. The guy just behind him - instead of immediately engaging or running for cover himself - runs in to take his spot. How does that make sense? "Hey, my buddy just died right there, better fill his spot before someone else takes it."
Fix the AI and the game could be really enjoyable.

This video have done more good for the game than any other media. I'm at least very curious now. Hopefully the story will be fantastic.

Seeing as this is a cinematic game, will their be any set piece sequences? (doesnt have to be COD style over the top) but it'd be good to know?

I need to see direct feed to decide which character models are better (this or uncharted) but both the best looking in game models I've ever seen. However (obviously due to it nearly being completed) the rest of the Order makes it a better looker atm.

Well it certainly looks beautiful. However, it seems like reason all clips of the game we've seen consist of cutscene -> small amount of gameplay -> cutscene is because the entire game is like that.

you only say it's a cutscene because of the camera angle. if you can still control the camera but they're doing the exact same things and force-walking you into it i doubt you'd even call it a cutscene.

I'm hoping for a PS4 + The Order 1886 bundle.

*fingers crossed*

Feb 20th actually.
It was announced on Feb 20th, It will be released on Feb 20th.

cool. watched a bit but just a bit, don't want to spoil myself too much.

i'm still surprised this game had such a negative reaction on GAF (then again maybe not). it has always looked like it was trying to basically be Gears + ResEvil in a Steampunk hat. So far looks like they've done well, to me. the presentation is crazy-polished.

Don't want to spoil too much, watched till he stealth kills the first guy and said "Man if the dude actually grabs the knife on his back I'll unnggg" Guy grabs the knife on his back, ran outside pants off and unnnnggggggg.

stopped video.

This isn't a slight against deejay but I think people in general really need to stop expecting devs to make something that appeals to everyone's preferences all the time. Yup, The Order is cinematic then action and not the other way around. If you like games that are the reverse and this doesn't appeal to you, then there are other games out there. For my personal tastes, I really like where RAD is going with this but I understand why it may not jive with other people's sensibilities.

Though, I would still like some huge awesome set pieces, now that it is a singleplayer-only "linear" cinematic shooter. Set pieces like the ones in Uncharted would be great. Something big, something huge, and they haven't shown such scenes yet, so I hope they'll show that before February.

I think it's the negative sentiments plenty of GAF has towards Hollywood-like games in the past gen where emphasis of looking good over gameplay which, going by the new machines, the 3rd Person Shooting just doesn't look next-gen.

Damn! This footage has really changed my mind on this game. The level of polish in the art and music makes this something that I want to experience, pre-ordering this today for sure

if you skip to 19 minutes ish there's a sniper section. I was actually starting to think it looked quite good and then the guy must've run out of time or something and then a cutscene kicked in and the mission restarted. the graphics are nice but the gameplay is prehistoric.

It was indeed a time sensitive part. He shot the wrong rebel first, and though he had time to take out the one you are supposed to shoot, he didn't. On his second attempt, you can clearly see what's happening as he was watching the rebel pull out the gun and start walk towards the target. If he shot him first, it would've auto succeeded, but it looks like you can take out both rebels if you're quick enough.

One of the pre-order bonuses has a "Desert Khaki" uniform which makes me think if we'll see desert in this game? O_o

Still can't believe that they are releasing this a week before BB

I pray that i won't, but knowing myself i'll rush through it just to be all set and free for BB release lol

...weird choice still :/

I would prefer they keep something like that a surprise for players :)

I don't think there very similar, but I do think The Order will be a replacement "cinematic TPS with a story arc across 3 games" for this gen while Uncharted might look to broaden its scope into new areas.

Endless blackwater as a pre-order bonus? I'm not sure about that one. I liked that you got a one time shot at getting back up and it didn't look like it regenerated after the demonstrator used it that one time.

Didn't you hear? BB got delayed.

The instakill qte was a really bad sign. Absolutely hated them in Dantes inferno.

I loved that little gadget to short the power circuit.

Son of a whore!!

I love that some of the AI aren't glued to cover. Those guys really move around! The combat looks intense.

I don't mind how close the camera is to the player, reminds me of RE4/5. Also, I love how you still have to peak out of cover, it's straight up cheating how some TPS give you full 360 camera control while in cover.

The pacing seems good too (very TLoU-ish). Can't be shooting all the time. The minigames show off that reimagined technology, too bad the guy sucked at the lockpicking.

What does "next-gen" third person shooting look like? How do you think one fundamentally changes that genre?

This is a point i really don't get. Pretty much once RE4 came out, and then Gears refined that set of mechanics it has been set in stone. How can you possibly "next-gen" up a mechanic like behind the shoulder point and shoot/cover gameplay?

Hopefully this is the game footage everyone needed to see that proves how epic this game is truly going to be when it's released. I for one have always been impressed by what the devs have showed us. I can't wait until February. This is definitely a day one buy for me.

Sorry, I don't mean to be mean, but the guy playing this is so incompetent that it's actually frustrating me to watch this. There was one stealth section where he slid past two guards that went swimmingly, but other than that, he manages to fuck up pretty much everything else. He spent a solid four minutes trying to pick a lock!

The only QTE that i find completely unnecessary is the stealth kill one. I have no problem with the button prompt, TLOU does it too, what I dont like is that the whole thing goes into a mini cutscene with the camera changing perspective. They should do it like the TLOU were the camera just follows the action of the player without changing perspective and incorporates the mini cutscene to look like on continuous gameplay motion. Other mini cutscenes I could do without are the ones for opening a door. They seem pointless tbh except for when there is an actual event that has to be played out, like the blimps bridge scene.

The graphics and music are fantastic. Still not digging the gunplay but I'll still give it a whirl especially if the story is good.

fair enough. It just really took me out of the moment when the cutscene happened and the mission reloaded. The way the characters ducked behind the cover made me think something different would happen but I guess you can't go off the path at all. It's a shame because it looked like the game might be opening up at that point.

That sniper rifle looks pretty badass. I'm partial to sniper rifles, so that'll be in my arsenal as much as possible if I pick the game up.
