Was going to make a Blue Mage (Final Fantasy series) or the main character from DQV, but just decided to try and make an 8-bit me...with armor, a cape, and a bandana :lol

Hell yeah! Amazon dropped this to $29.99 and tacked on a $10 promotional credit, so I went ahead and bit using my SMG2 credit for a grand total of $9.99. Thank God they dropped the price and included the credit, because I was holding off on 3D Dot Game Heroes to put my last promotion towards S&P2. It was killing me because From Software and Treasure are both developers I really want to support, and both games look amazing in their own right.

This game was a huge let down.

It has a lot of charm, and I love its unique art style. I love being able to import characters. I love all the references. The dialogue is great.

Now for my complaints.
- Repetitive enemies that are more annoying than fun to fight. Especially the fucking Magi. Why does one out of every three rooms in every dungeon after the second one have to have these assholes? Sure, they're easy. All you do is cast reflect and stand still ('cause if you are moving, they might teleport on top of you, and if you take a hit, you have to wait until your invuln frames go away, wasting time on your reflect spell, before you can have a chance to kill them again). But why are there so many of them? ARGH.
- If you are going to spawn shit close to doorways in the temples, let me use my sword before I take a couple steps out of the doorway. I also like getting ambushed by a monster with a crown after going up or down some stairs in a temple. Oh! And when I'm by a wall in a temple and the game ignores the direction I want to stab my sword and makes me stab the wall. That's pretty awesome.
- Items and spells are mostly useless outside of limited situations. The later spells feel a bit too powerful and too expensive to cast. Let's take the freeze spell for example. What if, instead of an instant win button that costs 4 magic, it had a smaller radius, lasted a smaller amount of time, and had its cost halved?
- The bosses have too much health and aren't really that interesting. And then
they want you to fight them all over again in the final dungeon.

Maybe some of these design choices were intentional to maintain the retro feel the game was going for...

Despite all of that, I still enjoyed the game enough to play through most of it. I started a save in the final tower tonight which was right after I had
opened up the first teleporter and killed the golem boss. I cleared up to the second teleporter and entered the room with the dragon
and the game froze up on me with a black screen and the music playing. I hadn't saved at all since I had started playing (I should have known better, I read some people complaining about freezes in this thread). I didn't lose that much time in the grand scheme of things, but I was already frustrated with the game. Faced with the prospect of killing the fucking
octopus boss again, the most annoying boss in the game (up to that point),
I ragequit and took the disc out of my PS3.

Dammit From. I will always love you for producing the masterpiece known as Demon's Souls but this game... You let me down :(

Just got this game yesterday and it's pretty fun. Dialogue is charming and nostalgic; got a couple of chuckles out of me which is rare. Gameplay is pretty solid, enjoyable.

The enemies have been a little redundant thus far, but thinking back I'm thinking that was true of the retro adventure games that this is based off of as well. One problem that I have a hard time overlooking is the visual field of focus; my eyes have been hurting from the constant focusing and refocusing that takes place in the overworld.

Though admittedly, I've been spending more time in the character editor (than actually playing the game. A couple of hours in and I have one made of my girlfriend (don't ask) and the floating android from Base Wars. :lol

I'm nearing the end and the loading screens have stopped. Seems to be the same for someone I know.

Anyone get the last 2-3 pages? Maybe in NG+?

This seems to be a known issue addressed on the official site. Apparently a patch might be coming. Basically none of the new level art created for the North American release actually shows up for some reason and may not have actually been included. It stops after 69 which is the end of what was in the original release.

So... yeah. While it's a great feature there's a a ton of games in there that were never released in the US and many that were released with noticeably different art in the US. They try to alleviate that problem and put in parodies we're more apt to recognize and it goes awry and we don't actually get them.

I've been working on a guide to the art that is available at the moment and with the help of some sites and other sources have been able to get maybe half of them. It'll probably end up going up at GameFAQs if anyone's interested.

Alright, been playing this game a lot lately, and I've come to the point where I need to shave off the minigames, uuuuuugggh. The Dash Circuits are fucking insanely hard; I was playing the Monaca Circuit for around two hours, and I FINALLY got a time of 55.02. Now to the first Dash Circuit... :(

EDIT: Take that, you motherfucking piece of shit minigame! 19.92 on the first stage, and 55.02 on the second stage, phew. Now to the Breakout minigame...

The upload page doesn't work for me, it just shows the rules and then a big white blank space. I'm trying to upload on a mac with firefox and safari and either way it doesn't work... help!

EDIT - it worked.

BEWARE MOTHERFUCKERS!

Alright, platinumed the game the other day (how many GAF'ers have done this? :p), so I feel qualified to write up a mini-review:

Pros:

+ Decent amount of content; fairly lengthy main quest, large map, lots of side-quests and events, lots of secrets, etc. You'll get a lot of game time out of this if you decide to go for the platinum
+ charming graphics, colorful world, and unlike many others, I think this game has its charm (many thanks to its great translation)
+ provides a decent challenge while not being über-frustrating
+ fun bosses
+ The character creator is awesome, and it's great fun to make characters and download other gamers' creations
+ Once again, the writing's great, and several comments made me laugh; I also loved how the main quest dialogue changed depending on what mode you chose (the Spelunker Mode changes made me laugh the most, since everyone assumes Spelunker is a incapable, worthless weakling :lol )
+ The game gives off a very polished facade aside from the temple slowdown

Cons:

- Some of the minigames are incredibly hard and will make you want to tear your hair off, the main offender being the two Dash Circuits
- A bit too many missable events, locking you out from earning swords and generally pissing you off
- Some of the later temples have too much slowdown, which seriously impacts on the responsiveness of the controls (which is extremely frustrating on Spelunker Mode)
- The game pushes the 8-bit gameplay a liiiittle bit too much, which makes the game a bit too simplistic

All in all, this game's worth it, especially if you can find it cheap (bought it day 1 here in Europe for €27). If you grew up with similar games (e.g. Zelda on NES), you'll feel right at home. If I were to grade this, I'd give it a 7+/10 or perhaps an 8/10.

I hated the Dash Circuits because for some reason, that minigame makes me feel dizzy. I dont really get nauseous playing games but Dash Circuit is one of them.

Does this game let you create your own levels as well, or just characters? I was wondering, because I thought someone had told me it was a create-your-own-RPG-lite type of game.

No, only characters.

The boss music is totally an homage to Metal Gear NES/MSX. I thought it was a coincidence until I found a blatant Metal Gear reference in the game.

Ah, I just got finished with this myself, but I won't have it long enough to go for another play to get a Platinum.

It's a great game with a few small flaws. I'd be all aboard for a sequel.

Cool game, but the missable events are a stupid decision. I don't even know what the developers were trying to accomplish because the game already has tons of replay value like FROM, SPELUNKER and minigame mode without needing to make the player play the game again in the same mode. Mad annoyance.

I've been holding onto my SMG2 credit for this exact reason. I was just hoping for a price drop but they're also throwing in a credit too? Sold as soon as I get home tonight. This game is going to be great for $9.99.

This was earlier last month I take it. Damn it! :(

Okay, I dont know whats going but I think the game just glicthed on me at the 6th dungeon:

Im at the Wind Temple.
I have taken the left openning in the room with
the 4 wind faces
on the north wall and done all I could from there but now I CANT proceed through
the red door on the right, in the same room
. What the hell!?

Am I missing something?

This is a really great game. Really like the art-style. But atm I can't enjoy it. I'm stuck at the mountains. Can't get to the fire temple, or magma temple, or whatever it was called.

As someone who owns a ton of Zelda games and has never finished one, will this hold my interest? I already like that it's a retro style game, and I like the music and have the Breakout song as a ringtone on my phone.

Today is my 21st birthday. Would I really enjoy this game...there's no demo or anything for me to try. :/

EDIT: Well I bought it anyhow. :D

Was the fire dungeon supposed to be WAY harder than the rest of the game up to that point, or did I miss something? Still using the default sword with some upgrades.

Wow...

So I got this game last week off Goozex, and I just got the 6th orb.

My lawd, this game is incredible. Fucking love it. Great graphics, great sound, perfect mix of old school games.

Can't wait to finish it up!

FUCK!

I booted it up because I wanted to finish the game...and loaded my save...and...bam, back to the start of the wind fortress.

I must not have saved, or thought it saved on its own or something...because I have to repeat that level, holy shit I'm mad.

Fuck.

This is a game killer for me, there's no way I want to go through that level again and then save up all the gold and rebuy all of my sword upgrades.

FUUUUUUCK!!! How could I have possibly done that?!?

I have a quick question for those who got the "No Deaths" Trophy. I read online that you can just save often and reload your game when you die and make it through the game that way. Did anyone do that? I'm only on the second dungeon now, is this a feasible way to keep up the game? I've only died a few times and it seems that if I just save right before I get down to my last heart, it wouldn't be a deal just to load back up.

Anyone else get the trophy playing through their first time doing that method?

Anyone know if there are any save files for right after you get the 6th orb?
I don't mind re-fighting the big bad guy in the castle (where you don't actually fight him as much as walk around the arena)...

But I really don't want to go through that level again.

ugh, maybe I should bust out a walkthrough and power through the level.

Was there ever an official strategy guide made for this game? This sounds like one of the few games that would really need one, and I tried looking online and didn't see one. What a bummer, and a loss of cash for Atlus! I would've totally purchased one.

Which swords are agreed upon to the "best"? I don't want to finish the stupid mini games to get those swords, I'm almost to the Hero sword, if I just upgrade that will it be good enough to finish the game with? What about the swords that are sold through small blocks, are those worth purchasing? I'm not trying to collect all the swords for the Trophy, just want something good to complete the game with.

FUUUU I'm still trying to do Dash circuit and I need to kill the last bosses without getting hit before I can even start my hard run. I seem to be on this long long line up of horribly impossible video game task. First it was Novastrike, then Pain, then that awful Trine trophy, not back to Dash circuit wooooo

Man F that. I did Dash Circuit like twice and I said forget about the Platinum in this F'ing game. Which is more of a relief because now I can play the game how I want instead of doing stupid things for trying to 100% it.

I may go back around and do the Bestiary Trophy after I finish the game if I really want to keep on playing. It's a fun game... but I don't want to hate it by trying to accomplish some of the tasks for Trophies. I really don't want to go around the world and collect all the heart containers either!

Went back through the Wind Temple, and am now in the Dark Tower.

Goddamnit this shit is long, but the pacing is JUST right...they get progressively shorter.

I was kind of disappointed that the bosses were stronger now...the Kraken-thing was super easy. Never got hit, never moved from the initial platform.

So close to the end.

Just picked this up at the GameStop Sale for $22. Played through the the first two dungeons and I must say that I am very surprised how much I am enjoying this game. I love the zelda series for the most part, so I guess this should have been expected, but all of the inside jokes, almost mirrored gameplay, and great music had me glued to the TV.

Can't wait to continue playing tomorrow night...

Just one quick thing, in the last few posts in the thread, are we not using spoiler tags? Not that there would be major spoilers, but I will probably stay away from the thread because of that.
