4K 120hz Firmware rollout begins for Sony X900H / XH90

In statements made to FlatpanelsHD Sony warns that the first VRR firmware is not final: "VRR has not been officially released for BRAVIA TVs. You can choose the VRR mode in the TV menu, but you may experience bugs. For the smoothest experience, we recommend waiting until VRR is officially released on BRAVIA TVs later this year," said Sony. The first update will be pushed out between October 6 and 13, and the second update for VRR will arrive later this year.

I've just received this today, and can confirm 4K 120hz is available!
Unfortunately VRR is not available yet, but this is a good sign so far. Check your system settings to see if the update is available to you.

VRR is the game changer here. Variable framerates between 60-120hz will look amazingly smooth, so nothing actually needs to be locked at 120hz.

You could ideally already take advantage of 120Hz on Xbox One consoles where games go over 60fps in order to avoid screen tearing.

Mostly just MP games. Well actually it will probably be only mp'ers for many years and some indies. Every major game will have ray tracing and whatnot so we'll never see 120fps4k in any kind of big AAA game.

HDMI 2.1 isn't required for VRR.

That's why my recent TV purchase doesn't have HDMI 2.1 but has most of the other features other than 4k120. TV still does 120, but at lower resolutions and I won't be able to tell at 5 -6 feet anyway.

I bought this tv just yesterday. 75 inch only $1,600. Cant fucking wait.

the OLED version looked much better but the 65 inch OLED was $1,800 and there was no 75 inch option. And it didnt even have HDM2.1 or vrr. bizarre decision by Sony.

I think OLEDs cannot be 2x more expensive. LG OLED was $1,600 for 55 inch. Why the hell would I buy that over a 75 inch tv like this which comes very close to matching its picture quality. yes, its no OLED but its no slouch either. The difference between OLED and LED should be $200 max. The 75 inch LG CX is $,3800. Roughly 3x more expensive. i dont know what they are thinking.

not only that. the other HDMI 2.1 features are game changing. Auto low latency and HDMI eARC are both great features.

besides, if you ever buy a RTX 3080 you can easily game at 4k 120 fps for current gen games. It's about future proofing more than anything.

That will come in the coming weeks. When i understood it correctly from all kinds of tv forums and blogs, VRR needs somekind of tech responsible for it. Vsync and Gsync are the most known examples, both are not implemented in the Sony XH90. Having said that both do not need necessary HDMI2.1 (although more/faster transmissions speeds aren´t the worst for it), but in the case of this TV HDMI2.1 itself will have some sort of VRR tech, which isn´t fully approved or fully licensed or something down the line, i´m not a pro on tv tech but that is what i came along while doing some reading on it. But maybe i misunderstood or missed a point somewhere down the line.

The XG95 may be the same hardware as the XH95 but the XH90 has a different SoC and has HDMI 2.1 (which both your TV and the XH95 don't have).

But if you fancy bricking your TV then be my guest...

I just figured this would include the 950H. If not I won't do it. Why would the XH90 have HDMI 2.1 but not the XH950 which is more expensive?

People have been asking that question forever. I've never seen Sony explain why it's that way, but it is.

AFAIK it has to do with the SoC on the XG/XH95 that doesn't have the necessary bandwidth (18Gbps HDMI 2.0 vs 48Gbps HDMI 2.1)

Great news, hopefully the VRR will come out in time, since from what it seems that the DiRT 5 might need it.

I bought the 55" size last week for €900, replacing a 2013 Samsung smart tv. The old TV's input latency in game mode was too big for some games, forcing me to put them on hold. Big upgrade for me in many ways and I love it. The bluetooth remote control that came with it was a very pleasant surprise for me.

Yikes. Don’t do that.

The 950g and h are a special exception. Rumor has it that Sony is going to push out an integrated firmware for both, since there is functionally no difference on the boards between the models.

The only HDMI 2.1 feature that matters for consoles this gen, IMO, is VRR. It’s technically available on 2.0, but I doubt Sony will patch it in.

The 950 costs more because it is a better panel, with higher brightness, better hdr and smooth gradation to limit banding on lower quality content.

The H/G can do 1080p / 120.
The 900F can do 1440p/120

The new processor is INSANELY fast, everything is so smooth / snappy and apps load in a blink of an eye.

I wish I had not purchased the 950G. What a letdown this TV has been. The remote, however, is the best they have ever created.

Sony hasn't added Dolby Vision yet. I can't buy a TV in 2020 if it doesn't have that feature. I rather go LCD but samsung and Sony are forcing me to get the LG CX if they're not going to support Dolby Vision .

Huh? I watch Dolby Vision content all the time on this very TV. Disney+ DV Light or Dark modes.

Damn, bought this TV because of the feature. OK they had to wait for the Androidtv version. But I hoped they had the update ready when the Androidtv version is out.

Well banana software like it is normal nowadays.


Dolby vision should already work. Is activate able in my one x.

Misinformation by people who can't see it in the menu, most of Sony's TV's from the last few years don't display the them in the menu until you feed it with a source that supports it,
Both the device and the source needs to support it and then Dolby Vision suddenly pops up when you play them, just like "IMAX Enhanced" and "Mastered in 4K" on Sony TV's
And most people fail to mention them too

Oh really? I love my 950g but I knew it’s limitations when I bought it. I’m waiting to install the H firmware, but that will take care of my only issue which is blooming.
