5 Things I Learned as the Internet's Most Hated Person

I'm gonna do a cracked article on 5 things I learnt from reading neogaf.

  1. PlayStation Vita is god's gift to us all
  2. Just drink water
  3. Americans clap after eating a meal
  4. There's a defense force for everything
  5. Mods are great, please don't ban us.

I'm new to this whole fiasco so I'm still trying to find the middle ground. Do you have any source that you would consider non-biased and actually focused on the real problem?
What is "the real problem?"

Yes, every indie dev is just waiting for the day his life becomes a living hell. Who doesn't love to get a million death threats a day, so you can sell more copies of your freeware game? Absolutely worth it.
I'm just going to leave you with this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streisand_effect

the Streisand effect is real. I'm not denying she is a victim, I'm just saying that there is plenty of hate to go around and if she was the most hated person on the internet she would either be a victim of a fatal SWATING incident, or be dead in some other way.

Can anyone saying they dislike her (like its some kind if disclaimer) honestly explain why to me?

While I dont dislike her, if she was sleeping around behind this dudes back with a number of guys, thats pretty legit a shit thing to do. Go to off topic and see any relationship advice thread and how quickly people get wound up and call people out for it. No one likes a cheater or being cheated on.

The whole lynch mob thing with death threats etc are totally uncalled for, but she is kind of in the spotlight as a blogger and personality in the industry so she is always going to be something of a target for the internet hate machine which usually doesnt require people to have any real reason to go off on a tirade. Obviously that sort of shit is totally unwarranted, but as mentioned, I also believe cheating is one of the lowest acts out there; its embarassing and demoralising for the person on the receiving end. Enough to justify death threats etc, no, but like I said, give some morons some sort of deluded sense or moral high road and the pitch forks come out.

Like I said,,I am not defending the idea of anyone sending death threats etc, but she isnt the first and wont be the last to cop a flogging from the wrong end of the internets anonymous douche bags and if those assholes feel they are even remotely vindicated in what they are doing, its a shit fight for all. Hell look at the shit a 13yr old school girl Rebecca Black copped for having the audacity to put out an innocent pop song. Being anonymous turns people into complete cunts with little to no morality.

Just some opinions on the subject.

  • Both sides of this argument are ruined by the extremists.
  • I don't think journalists or bloggers should be paying the artists they cover via patreon.
  • I think Zoe Quinn is playing the victim to a sickening degree. Faking DDOS attacks and all that nonsense. Even look at this clickbait article.
  • People sending death threats is always wrong and pathetic but that's just the stupidity of the internet that exists today.
  • Game journalists stating that all gamers are white males. That is just plain extremist social justice warrior bullshit. It was really nice seeing Twitter fight back against this ridiculous label.
It's so useful to me that you guys use this term. It instantly tells me everything I need to know about you. Please don't stop using it.

I am completely against trolls venting personal information about any individual on the internet though, regardless if there's some truth about some of the allegations against her.
There..really isn't one. That's kind of the problem, there's no actual argument. She didn't sleep around to get favorable coverage, what happened with her ex is honestly nobodies business. There's no middle ground when one sides arguments are entirely based on false information. Why would you want to compromise with that group. Especially because there's literally no reason not to side with Zoe since she's not asking for anything other then to be left alone and naaaybe check out her (again, totally free) game

How about we stop the #gamergate discussion,
there's a thread for that

The moderation team has been asked for a thread dedicated specifically to the #gamergate phenomena currently exploding on a Twitter near you.

Here are some articles to catch you up to speed if you haven't been following:

Leigh Alexander's "Gamers are over" article: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/2...s_are_over.php

David Auerbach's response "Gaming Journalism is Over": http://www.slate.com/articles/techno..._but_they.html

L. Rhodes's article "To fair-minded proponents of #GamerGate": https://medium.com/@upstreamism/to-f...e-7f3ce77301bb

Some ground rules:

1. If you're not seriously interested in discussing the issue, don't post. This is a general rule, but it will be moderated sternly in this thread.
2. Don't drop a link and say, "That's how I feel!" If you can't be bothered to put your opinions into your own words, don't post.
3. Don't post enormous crazy-person image files of 800 tweets in the same image. That's not convincing, unless you're trying to convince people you're not entirely there.
4. Substantiate your claims. If you claim there's a conspiracy, you better have evidence. And not "Ah, but they all started writing about this at the same time!" circumstantial evidence, but actual evidence of collusion and impropriety.
5. Don't link to stuff you aren't willing to support. If you post it, you posted it. If it contains something that would get a ban, you're going to take that ban.
6. Attempt to be kind to one another. If you can't manage that, be civil.

Editor's Note: If you found this article from another message board and are about to leave a comment that boils down to, "I don't condone the harassment, but let me explain why she deserved it!" please just take a deep breath, step away from your computer, and call your mother. Tell her you love her. Call a friend and ask if they need anything. Go outside, gaze up into the sky, take a deep breath, and really appreciate the fact that you're alive and that you should make the most of it. Thank you.

I was sure this was about Don Mattrick or Adam Orth before entering the thread.

I'm disappointed and I'm ready to move on to the next scandal.

Not the whole thing no. But she does seem to be enjoying the attention.

Sentiments like this are so strange to me, especially in light of - as the article states - this 'publicity' manifesting itself in such comical ways as strangers calling her heart-trouble recovering father about Quinn's supposed whoring. What's the expected way to deal with the attention? Crying in public? If I may offer a counter opinion to "she seems to be enjoying the publicity", I think she's actually just putting on a defiant face in order to deny the attackers the Schadenfreude they're so desperately shooting for.

I think being bombarded by horrific tweets and then randomly being insulted by minor celebrity Alec Baldwin and having strangers call your father and scream that you're a 'whore' and having your name suddenly splashed over mainstream news is more than enough reason to feel like the most hated person on the internet. No one should have to deal with an absurd runaway train like this. Seriously. And over fucking what?

I didn't know her at all. I was expecting someone completely different like Al Baghdadi or some senior chechen commander in Syria who sells underage girls to oil sheikhs but unfortunately the internet raves more about dramas such as this one here which are very small at best than real dramas that kill, rape, destroy lives and make millions homeless.

No, she's not the most hated person.

One thing though. What kind of miserable person phones strangers and tells them their daughter is a whore, without any connection at all, just out of reading articles and discussions. Are they in the subway with me? Do they walk past me in the streets?

She didn't do any crime, nor is she some political activist or anything that could make her dangerous enemies. What the hell.

I don't think she's the Internets Most Hated Person.

And I don't think I'll click that link.

If you read the link you'd have seen the editor's note at the beginning of the article, explaining that Cracked reached out for her "to see what it's like to be the Internet's Most Hated Person (well, for a couple of weeks, anyway)."

Of course, you didn't and instead are maybe even wrongfully making her responsible for the premise of the article she was contaced to write.

WTF at people taking issue with the title. It's Cracked. It's a comedy website. Yes, she may not be technically the most hated person, that's probably like the Westboro Baptist Church or NAMBLA, but it's not exactly meant to be taking really literally. People really have trouble with context when it comes to reading articles about video games it seems.

Fairly certain some of you would accuse the Onion of making clickbait at this point.

Thanks. Really valuable to read this while I keep finding stuff related to the fiasco.

loooool

"How can she complain like that? She's still alive isn't she??"

are you that bored with your life? twisting my words in a way so that you can bunch me up with the "bad guys"? That is disgusting interpretation of what i said that ignores ALL context. i'm not even gonna bother with you.

I'm going to get unnecessarily defensive about parts of certain groups being called misogynistic because I'm not associated with them, even though nobody but myself specifically associated me with them.

I am then going to get angry because I am very uncomfortable with sexism that I claim to be no part of being called to light, because I am overly comfortable with said sexism existing and personally do nothing to stop it. It is also more convenient for me to continue doing nothing about it; therefore, for some reason, other people doing something about it makes me angry.

Did I just about cover #notallgamers types? Seems to be my impression so far.

My 2 cents.

I don't like Zoe Quinn and don't find her to be a very respectable person. That being said, people need to leave the Quinn topic alone. As far as I'm concerned the real issues behind #GamerGate and all of that BS stopped being about Quinn a good while ago.

Weren't people screaming about how it's totally not about Zoe for like, an entire week before immediately redoubling their harassment efforts as soon as some chucklefuck found "evidence" (read: unsubstantiated bullshit that was debunked an hour later) of her having not donated the money from her game to charity? Pardon me if I find it hard to believe this shit isn't about her (and other women and pro-feminist people in the industry) at this point.

most of the internet has never heard of her, the cop in Ferguson has a better claim to the Internet's most hated person in the same time frame as whatever the heck we want to call the stuff with Quinn

All of the "who?" responses are making me laugh pretty hard. I'm not laughing at you for not knowing who she is, I'm laughing because she's supposedly the 'Internet's most hated person' and people on the internet either don't care or don't know her at all.

I don't think she's the Internets Most Hated Person.

And I don't think I'll click that link.
It sounds hyperbolic but unless I'm forgetting someone obvious I actually think it's quite possible that she has received more abuse and hate than of any other person on the internet during the last month.

i followed the zoe thing from the beginning i have read almost everything on the case

1 i dont care about zoe sexual life

2 i care about her being a pathological LIAR ( she admits that on the logs with her boyfriend) the girl have serious issues

3 i despise the people who insult her or disturb her or make calls to her home

4 there is a lot of proof about zoe quinn doing some discutible things,i mean real proof no matter how her is defenders tried to dismiss the whole ordeal

having said that,im against the whole hate campaing on her,but at the same time im very worrried about the people who defend everything she said because this girl has been proven a liar on the past and giving her a free pass its not the correct thing to do ( at least on my opinion)

and no..she is not the most hated person on internet, internet barely knows about her

4 there is a lot of proof about zoe quinn doing some discutible things,i mean real proof no matter how her is defenders tried to dismiss the whole ordeal

I'd like to see this in a form that's not an image macro with conspiracy theories or a half hour Youtube screed from someone that frequents the Red Pill.

Go to off topic and see any relationship advice thread and how quickly people get wound up and call people out for it. No one likes a cheater or being cheated on.

I mean...the entire basis for this is her ex who wrote a 10,000 word blog post and then spread it around to the entire internet. In terms of who's side I believe, the guy who has proven himself with his actions to be an enormous fucking asshole starts off with about -1000 points

WTF LOL!!! there must be some subliminal message that my post has that i'm not aware of. how did you come to that conclusion?

... Please. You posted a link to the wiki page about the Streisand effect. It sounds like you're saying she should stop talking about this because it's only going to make things worse.

Just some opinions on the subject.

I think Zoe Quinn is playing the victim to a sickening degree. Faking DDOS attacks and all that nonsense. Even look at this clickbait article.

Zoe Quinn is playing the victim...
playing the victim...
playing...

I mean this with as much respect as possible, but how fucking stupid are you to think that it is a role? She IS a fucking victim, as in factually, not debatably.

Use some of that precious oxygen you are inhaling. Let it reach your brain through your blood stream. Use that brain fuel to contemplate what you are saying, then try again. There is no logical, factual or any-ical/ual that suggests she is pretending to be hated by a bunch of fools on the internet. Like none at all.

2 i care about her being a pathological LIAR ( she admits that on the logs with her boyfriend) the girl have serious issues

1. Do you really think private conversations leaked by a jilted ex is really in any way conclusive of anything?

2. Don't you think the real problem is that the asshole ex leaked the private conversations in the first place? This is someone's personal life for god's sake.
