+50 hours in an RPG you haven't touched in years...

how do you jump back in?

I find myself in situations like this often and I usually don't remember the story or controls

do you just start over fresh? watch YouTube videos to try to refresh your memory?

currently in this situation with KCD and a couple other titles.

Did this just recently with Cyberpunk. I played at launch and beat the game but had a few saves before the last mission. I wanted to play the DLC that I never got around to when that launched. I did a brand new fresh start to experience the whole thing again.

I don't usually drop games after investing so much time in them, however I guess I would try to continue if I can remember or if I got hints regarding how to continue, otherwise fresh start.

Forgot why I lost steam but maybe it was because I went hardcore mode. I don’t remember what hardcore entailed, but I could easily see myself getting burnt out from a super punitive hardcore system. Maybe I’ll start a new game in normal difficulty.

I'm like this with DOS2.
Thankfully it has a detailed synopsis(?) so when I lapse (and I often do) I can bring myself up to speed with plot, controls etc.
Same with Triangle strategy.
Every rpg should have something like this for when you're attention is diverted for some time.

Kingdom Come Deliverance is really a Worst Case Scenario type of game for this.
Lots of complex systems to relearn.

I always start over. There's just no way. It feels wrong to come back mid-game after too long.

The good news is that the game is incredible, so it should still be fun to replay! Especially if you've forgotten all the small details.

I'd wait long enough until I'd barely remember anything and then just start over. A 50+ hours investment is way too much to just jump in and continue like it's nothing. Funnily enough, I'm doing this with KCD right now. Believe me, it's better this way.

This was one of the reasons why I was glad when devs started adding the '...previously on' montages in games during the PS4/XBO generation.

The problem is that most of the games they added this to weren't RPGs and were instead action games, so people complained and now you don't see it as much anymore. Honestly it should be a standard in every RPG

For me, simply talk to some npc's to figure out what is going on around you and that's it, even if it's just to get the vibe. But I love games so my memory is pretty strong on remembering generally where I left off. If I was 50 hours in, I would never start over, it would have to be under 3. I did have to restart Fantasian more than halfway through cause somehow deleting extra save files deleted everything. Thanks Apple!!!
Or just check YouTube for a playthrough, it's not spoiling anything if you already accomplished what is shown.

That’s exactly what happened to me in both xenoblade 1 and 2. I will finish them one day. Probably when I can play it at a better resolution and frame rate on switch 2.

Stopped playing Xenogears when I reached the final boss. Have absolutely no idea why. But this was in 1998, so I'm probably gonna have to start over now.

Dark Chronicles, I only understand the power system, I suck at everything else, I always try to rush and end up wasting more time in making progress. Jrpgs aren't for kids cause it punish you really hard.

In all honesty I'm a good way into Chrono Trigger (late game) and don't remember what to do next. I'm also double digits into FF6 and IIRC I went back a save to get some missable stuff but it's been forever. FF6 had some sort of update and all my installed mods are probably busted now so that'll require some fixing too.

The longer it is the more it puts me off, which isn't great.

How’d that go? Still fun or a slog?

Beginning was fun. Some of the mid-game was kind of a slog. Closer to the end was great and Phantom Liberty was fantastic. Depending how quickly you can get a build up and running is when it really starts to be very fun. Like I said though, I completed the game at launch so it was a interesting experience to see how much stuff had changed. Def a great enjoyable game.

I had the same experience with kcd, but it didn’t take long to adapt. I thought the entire story would be told, so I stopped playing at some point(after getting tired of countless hours of horseback riding). Turns out, the game ends just 2-3 hours later anyway lol.
What I generally do is start over for a couple of hours to go through the tutorials and relearn the controls, before jumping back into the main save from previous months / years

I don't know how this never occurred to me before; it's a great idea!

On this topic, kind of... all told I easily have 1000+ hours between all the Souls games. Honestly, that's a conservative estimate. That said, I've never completed a Souls game. Have never seen credits roll.

I pick up after i left off. I did this with Persona 4 when i transferred my save from my modded Vita to pc. No way am i going to redo the 40hrs i put into it. Most of the story came back to me. Then i read a synopsis for the parts i forgot about.

sadly I do this way to much in every game. I still haven't gotten more than 15 hours in Skyrim... that's where my backlog begins... I start over and get like meh I did this already and quit again.

Im not fool enough to drop a game for months/years and then resume it. Who the fuck does that? If the game sucks, then I abandon it for good. If you got tired of playing it, you won't magically not get tired after a year playing it again. Weirdos.

Usually start over or never go back.

When starting over you can get back to that point usually pretty quickly.

I love starting new in most rpgs though as the early game is usually the toughest part.

I never got round to playing the witcher 3 dlc's ill probably start a new game as it was years ago since i last played it.

This is legit the first time I've seen this gif with the original edit.

I think I played Final Fantasy 12 for 40 hours, reached the very end of the end, but then stopped playing. This was like 17 years ago. I still have the memory card with the save.

If I've put that much time in to start with, I can generally jump in and the controls and gameplay come back to me in the first hour or so. It's surprising how many years you can go and still remember the timing and things like that.

It's something I notice a lot when jumping back into Genesis games that I owned in the 90s.

I do this quite frequently with long RPG's and come back fresh for them. Its a much better experience as (idk about you) I tend to forget what happens, and you get to appriciate the story in its entirety if you restart.

I always have to start fresh as far as I'm concerned.
If I don't, it will always feel wrong, even with watching recaps and whatnot, I will feel like I'm still missing something, forgot something maybe important, not comfortable with the gameplay etc... afraid of not getting the proper full experience.
I'm the same way with TV Shows, if It's been years, I usually feel like I have to start over.

It's annoying though because sometimes you remember too much for starting over, but not enough to go back comfortably to where you were lol

I start over no matter the game if I've been away from it for over a month. I'm completely lost. I wish there was a recap function where you can refresh yourself on the story and game controls.
