#0:
Q: Any word on localization for the West?
A: No idea at this time. Though seeing as its a SEGA title and Atlus has recently picked up Stella Glow, then perhaps they will grab this also. From what Ive seen from playing the game so far, is that this title is not connected to the previous 2 directly, besides the general setting.

#1:
Q: What type of game is this?
A: JRPG, Random battles. Not really much else to say besides that. Watch the gameplay videos in the media section above.

#2:
Q: Do I need to know Japanese to play this game?
A: Not really, but at the same time if you want to know whats going on in the story and what the skills do, then yes being able to read is suggested.

#3:
Q: Is this game based on an ongoing series?
A: For the time being with what I have seen so far from playing the game, it is not directly related to the first 2 titles in the 2020 series which were released on the PSP. So with that being said, do not think you would need to play the previous titles to enjoy this game.

#4:
Q: Does this work on a "Western" 3DS?
A: Do believe that unless you have a Japanese 3DS the game is region locked. I recall folks saying JP 3DS games work on Asian 3DSes also, but can't confirm that. If anyone knows otherwise in regards to the region protection let your fellow posters know.

#5:
Q: Does this game use the 3DS 3D feature?
A: Does not seem like it. Tried it in both running around the map areas and in battle, both of which was a no go for the 3D effect.

#6:
Q: I saw that this game has a lot of famous Male / Female VAs, does this mean there is a lot of voiced dialog in the game?
A: This game, similar to the previous two on the PSP are quite sparse on voiced dialog. The VA's are used for the player characters voiced lines during battle.

#7:
Q: I dont have access to all the classes at start, what gives?
A: The Rune Knight, Fortuner, Mage and Vanisher are all unlocked via story progression.

#8:
Q: Are there any official review scores out?
A: 7th Dragon III Code: VFD (3DS) – 9/8/9/8 [34/40]

Btw do know the banners are a bit large. Though considering that wont have too much traffic in this thread, not going to bother to fix it. Had another idea for a different banner, but would have taken too much time.

Also yes DLC exists and there is a general schedule / list, but didnt bother to make that section either at the moment. Since can imagine there will be less than a handful of folks who will pick this up lol.

Same goes for translating the names of all the VAs available in the game for character creation.

*Currently fixing formatting errors.

I am always amazed that you put as much work as you do into Japanese game OTs that barely anyone here will pay attention to.

Only real reason why I do this is to make sure I dont forget how to work with graphical editing software. Always wind up learning something new too with trying to get certain effects. Such as in the Utawarerumono False Mask OT with the banner text, for trying to match the official design of the text used.

Granted that isnt anything special, since its just a matter of finding a similar font, creating a similar gradient effect, adding that to the text then putting the outline on. But the process of doing it is important.

Since without doing stuff like this, there really is no reason for me to be messing with graphics in general lol.

---

Anyways with this done I can get back to playing the game.

Awesome work! :D

Can you tell if it runs in 30 or 60fps? No 3D is shocking. o_O

Thanks!

Not quite sure actually. Since to me it looks like the PSP version. Honestly unless its highly obvious I rarely bother with paying attention to framerate. As thats generally the last thing on my list of worries, unless it turns into a slideshow, such as what happens with certain bosses in Phantasy Star Nova for example. As that game literally turned into a slideshow... No idea how that passed the submission check, as you do not really need to do anything out of the normal to cause it to occur.

3D for the most part is a useless feature that just wastes resources during production is how I see it. So am not really surprised these days when I see games that do not have it. Then again I never was one for gimmicks like that so my views with such features are less than generous. lol

Another example is do not think Stella Glow had 3D also. Its been a while since I played, but dont think it did?

I started playing the demo but dropped it upon finding out that it doesn't let you create custom characters until you upgrade to the full version. Hope the impressions are good.

Am sure that was done due to size restrictions and such.

Though there is an actual point to playing the demo.

Players will also get to import their save data into the game’s full release, then change character appearances, names, and job classes.

As an added bonus, those who import save data from the demo into the retail release will get the following items:
  • EX Upper: an accessory that increases experience points gain by x1.2
  • Skill Upper: an accessory that increases skill point gain by x1.2
  • Nagamimi’s Charm: an accessory that increases attack, speed, and evasion of the user.
  • 10,000Az: in-game currency that can be used to make purchases.

I really should have played the demo first lol.

Oh, that's interesting. I think I still want to finish the original 7D and one of the 2020 games first since III seems to be a huge throwback to all of them.

I think for the most part they separated this one from the 2020 and 2020-II storyline just to make sure that folks did not feel like they needed to play the previous games.

Will see how it goes when I get further though. But at the moment thats what it feels like they are going for with the game.

I really wish the party wasn't limited to 3 members, it was probably my least favourite thing about 2020 and 2020-II. Anyway, I hope the game ends up being good! My copy won't be here until tomorrow so I guess I'll finish up the demo while I wait.

Yeah I never liked that either, due to really limits the party not to mention what classes you can use. And the 2020 series itself isnt exactly something one would want to play over again just to use a new set of characters. Always thought it was odd since they designed the characters to work together. Esp with the second title and the addition of the Idol. Though due to the 3 party limit makes you want to bring the most efficient party. That and the Psychic was insanely OP by the end of the game lol Making the other classes trivial. I had used 2 samurai and a hacker and just brute forced my way through both games lol. Both of the samurai were specced differently.

Really wished that they would have at least gone 4 characters minimum.

Didn't the original 7th Dragon have 4 characters? It seems strange to take a step back to 3 when all that does is make party building less fun.

By the way, is there a way to skip battle animations in the full game? Watching the animations takes up way too much time and it'd be nice to skip them to go through battles faster.

Yeah it had 4. I think its more a limitation on their design with the 2020 games which is why they cut back 1 party member.

Not sure Id have to look at the options.

Just looked did not see an option for that, the options menu itself is pretty barebones. SE / Music / Voice and difficulty level basically.

That's very disappointing, I guess I'll just have to endure watching the animations over and over again. I think the people developing 7th Dragon need to keep up with the new EO releases, every new version of EO has added convenient options like increased battle speed, fast text skipping, easily readable skill trees, and buff/debuff/enemy weakness displays...Meanwhile, 7th Dragon still doesn't let you skip battle animations or show much of anything on the battle screen other than when a dragon is about to enter combat!

Total difference in dev team strength as Atlus vs Imageepoch, is not what Id call a fair fight. lol

Though in terms of skipping battle animations the very last game that Imageepoch did Stella Glow does have that option.

Since this is done by Sega and not IE on top of them running a budget, would imagine they did not want to stray too far from things that would increase production time and whatnots.

The largest positive though is that at least there is a whole new cast of classes for the most part. 2020-II didnt really have that.

I suppose you're right, though it's still a little frustrating. I guess I should be happy 7th Dragon III is even a real thing, after all the trouble Imageepoch has apparently been going through.

As for the new classes, I'm really looking forward to seeing what they have to offer, though I'm not a fan of them being locked behind story progression. Hopefully it won't take too long to unlock them all.

Its a bit past trouble at this point as the company is a smoking crater in the ground. lol Make that just crater as the company has been dead since mid May this year. Though seems like a bunch of folks are at Sega. Know some other(s) landed at another company also.

The fact that Sega decided to continue the series, let alone move it to a new platform was surprising and yeah being happy about it rather than just overly negative would most def be the reasonable thing to do.

I checked the credits and a lot seem to just be internal Sega folks, as in, I didn't see any so far that matches an Imageepoch person.

I also checked 2020-II's credits, and that had two directors; the one from Sega who's the director of III, and the IE person who also directed Stella Glow.

I would assume that 7th Dragon III is mainly by the Sega half of the 2020-II team.

Am talking about in general for IE. Since I remember we had the discussion before in your thread? I think where you had checked to see if any IE members were present with this game and it did not appear so.

Would imagine that they would have kept certain team members, just because it allows for them to develop similar products, without having to go and tell someone else to "start from scratch". Seeing how Sega still seems to be interested in smaller titles like these.

Really hope this makes it to the US someday. Looks so cool.

I would like to think Atlus will try to secure it seeing how they got Stella Glow. Lets hope Stella Glow does well, so Sega is willing to work together to get another title of theirs published in the West for the 3DS.

Yeah, that has me a little bit more optimistic. And I suspect that this game would have a little bit more western appeal than Stella Glow, anyway.

Thing is Stella Glow is pretty solid and its been a while since the 3DS has had a decent SRPG. As even in Japan outside of Disgaea the genre is kinda dead for some reason. Though here Stella Glow was highly praised too. Am concerned with how many reviewers will actually make their way through the whole game before doing a review. As it does start off a bit slow, but things most def pick up. Even more so once your characters start unlocking their skills and such. Would imagine the general Atlus fans should enjoy it though.

Yeah this is a lot more mid ground in terms of setting so do agree with you there.

They should just drop the III from the title itself and leave it as "7th Dragon Code: VFD" to prevent the usual "freakout" that happens when a numbered title comes out in the West, but not the previous ones.

If this did get published under the Atlus name though, I imagine they'd keep the III anyway since they always seem to do that with games, even if they don't release the previous ones.

Probably as a way of keeping things clear and consistent across regions or something.

I've been wanting to play one of these so badly, yet the translation for 2020 on PSP is incomplete and the 3DS games are region locked.

Will buy OST, though. Such good work music.

So unless we see a pre-order number for release day tomorrow, the final number for the game on Comgnet is 111pts, where the original on DS was seemingly 96pts and 2020 at 150pts. Never found the number for 2020-II sadly, but that sold the least.

Yeah since they did that with Conception 2, Tears to Tiara 2 and Dungeon Travelers 2. Leave the number in that is.

Not surprising about 2020-II considering how little anything changed with that game lol.

Are the data convert bonuses dependent on how far you get in the demo?

Am not sure actually. Id have to check on that.

Just looked at the JP info on the 4gamer site and they did not specify if it was related to if you cleared the demo or not. And just basically said that converting said data gets you the bonuses. Hmm...

Oh man, I want this game so badly. I played 7th Dragon 2020 on PSP and looooved it. I have 2020-II and intend to start on it soon. Being on the PSP was no problem import-wise, but being on 3DS... ugh. And I doubt there's a chance of us getting it here.

Makes me so mad, too. I have the money to import the game! I don't have the money to get a freakin' Japanese 3DS as well. Ugh...

I've heard of an exploit but I'd rather not bother with something like that. I just want to buy this game and play it.

Yeah its a bit stupid the whole region locking thing. But can thank all the previous DS pirates for that...

yep, finished it yesterday.
btw is the '9 member' party is available from the start or it will be unlocked in the later part?

Unfortunately the Rune-Knight / Fortuner are locked away in the Atlantis scenario and the Mage / Vanisher in the Eden one.

So you start out being able to create Samurai, God Hand, Agent, Duelist.

I know its kinda disappointing they did it that way considering the box art lol I had wanted to make my MC a vanisher from the get go D:

For member limit am not sure what it is. Dont have my 3DS nearby to check.

2nd unit unlocked along with Rune Knight/Fortuner class. I guess 3rd unit will be unlocked at Eden at the same time as the remaining 2 classes

That one JP gamer who usually gets stuff ahead of time managed to go through the whole game and most content so far. Granted due to how they are pretty good at gaming wouldnt try to use them as some sort of measuring stick for play time, but seems like it took them around 27.5 hours.

They didnt upload a review yet though. Am guessing they are working on it now.

Beat the first "real" boss last night, the classes in this game seem a little more interesting compared to the ones in 2020/2020-II. Feels like everyone has a little more utility and buffs are better now. The passive hp regen buff in particular seems way stronger now, in 2020 it used to heal very little at level 1 but in III it heals around 20% right from the beginning. Rune Knight has been a pleasant surprise so far, I was expecting a pretty average jack-of-all-trades class and ended up with a surprisingly good tank(wanted to go in blind so I didn't watch the class videos lol). Also, the new unit system solves the "I can't use every class!" problem since everyone gains exp/sp and you can switch units at any time, which is a big improvement compared to the usual 3 character party lock.

Yeah overall am pretty happy with the game. Though am sad to hear that Sega had said this will be the last in the series. As it seems that they did most def improve things.

One thing I wonder is if the 2nd tier of skills for the single katana use samurai skills will be better than or at least equal to the dual katanas. Since at the moment there is no real need to go single katana with the kind of skills dual has. Wonder why they did that.

Wait, Sega confirmed that this is the last in the series? That's really disappointing, considering the improvements I've seen so far. Did they mention why they weren't continuing the series?

I haven't really used regular katana skills either, but I was under the assumption that they had better base damage multipliers than the dual katanas, but less elemental coverage. One of them also targets all enemies which dual katanas can't really do. I'm thinking the tier 2 skills will probably focus more on the regular/iai stance abilities and that might give them some better options?

It sounded like it was going to be the last in the series. But no other real details from them on that. I guess it depends on how well it sells.

The duals have Momiji which used to be an iai skill and did fire damage. The duals also have the target all enemies at random x 8 times. Then its upgraded to 10 - 12 etc. Which is better than the single sword one. Dont see any iai skills yet so am guessing they are tier 2 stuff.

Right now as it stands for starting out the duals outclass the single.

I can only hope that there's a small glimmer of hope that this game will get localized, I mean if they believe Stella Glow can generate some profit, this can as well.

Looks like I might've misunderstood what you meant by tier 2? For some reason I thought of tier 2 as the second set of new skills, but I guess it makes more sense to have tier 1 as the basic starting skills and tier 2 as the first new set, lol

In that case yeah, the basic single sword skills are pretty lacking. Burn status seems a lot better than bleeding, and dual swords do fire and antiair while single swords don't do anything special. Even the second set of skills doesn't seem that good, only one iai skill and all it does is damage/reduce ailment resist for 1 turn of setup(assuming you don't start in iai?).

Pretty sure Sega confirmed it's the last in the story but NOT the series.

Very good to hear. Since they really should continue the series, seeing as how they made improvements to it.

If they made the system with the skills the same as the previous 2 games, then we should get an unlock later on in the story which adds a bunch more skills. Though have not made it far enough yet to see if thats going to happen again. Do hope so, since that really helped make things more interesting with the advanced skills.

For bleeding granted while it is situational am still using the duelists trap skill. Since the dragons usually have an all party attack that is what generally triggers it lol. Though goddamn at the point costs of the duelists skills. D: So far out of all the classes I have she has got to be the most expensive.
