80s style synth-pop/electro synth/cyberpunk music

well, i guess you were banned, probably for this clearly wrong opinion :E

Just wanted to dime in and say:

Meet Matt Stryker - probably even better than Roller Mobster!
Looking for Tracy Tzu and Sexkiller on the Loose - Both great!

Hang 'em All is a 10/10 song as well. So hype.
I have no idea what that guy was talking about.

That Gunship album is fantastic stuff!

Yep, and you know what's surprising (for me at least)? Gunship is a synthwave side project from metal band Fightstar. A metal band created a fantastic album in a completely different genre so far removed from their usual stuff.

Are the same male and female vocalists in Gunship also in Fightstar?

Zombi has a new song up from their upcoming album "Shape Shift".
More in line with Goblin + John Carpenter. Heavy synths, awesome drumming, horror atmosphere.

That's the good stuff

That is very cool indeed. I'll have to check out Fightstar in that case.

My friend pointed out to me not long ago that metalsucks.net is doing a "Synthwave Sunday" piece that they started a few weeks ago, interesting as hell to see some of the albums talked about here pop up there. Nice to see those barriers crossed and a metal blog talking about this stuff.

Fightstar also started as the side project of a boyband...

This is only kind of true. One of the band members has been in a pop-punk band before Fightstar but that was in like, 2003 or something.

Still, none of these random facts make the Gunship album any less amazing :p.

The Gunship album is pretty good. Not all of it is my cup of tea and I'll admit I was fairly skeptical about a synthwave album with vocals on every track but it's surprisingly good...not perfect though. It starts very strong but there's some tracks in the middle I always skip. Some tracks as well make me wonder if they would have faired better as instrumentals. Maximum Black for me doesn't start until the vocals stop and it kicks in at the end. And as much as I like Revel in Your Time the lyrics at the start make me wince a little, I'm pretty sure he says "feel" three times within 10 seconds on the first verse. Anyway, its a great track and I'm picking hairs.

I take it as a good sign that the album includes covers by Carpenter Brut, MN1984 and Makeup and Vanity Set. The MN1984 cover though... it like, eliminates everything that's good about Revel in Your Time. The Carpenter Brut and MAVS covers are very good as you'd expect.

The Carpenter Brut shirt was planned to ship two days ago but apparantly is delayed until August 21st according to the bandcamp page.

Kind of a bummer, summer will be almost over by then. Also - would've been nice if he informed me of this with a mail or something.

Interesting thoughts!

In contrast, I think the MN1984 remix is better than the original and I currently have Maximum Black on repeat... can't stop listening to it. My favourite at the moment.

I just had a thought (a rare occurrence) but is synth wave to us as rock-a-billy was to people in the early 80s?

I think one of the things that make synthwave unique is that it draws inspiration from not only a specific era's music, but also its movies, TV and videogames.

There's a new Kuedo album dropping today called Assertion Of A Surrounding Presence. There's a definite Ghost in the Shell and Blade Runner influence like the first album, but he's taken a more dark and textured ambient route this time. Roly Porter helped produce as well... I found out about both artists through GAF, so I thought I'd drop this here.

Good stuff, very cyberpunk sounding.

I got an email about it late July pretty sure, it was after the day it was meant to ship though still.

Oh wow, will definitely check this out. Severant was a classic imo heavy Blade Runner influence.

Synthrock band The Night Terrors were commissioned for a project to incorporate church organ with live drums and theremin to create a death disco dreadnaught of antediluvian doom. It was reissued on Mondo earlier this year, but like everything they release, I already missed it. Their bandcamp has the full album up to stream (it's cheaper on googleplay, though).

Bit unrelated but my friend went to a music fest in Canada and got drunk with Perturbator every night. So jealous D:

Oooooh I do enjoy Kuedo quite a bit, thanks for this!

Dance With The Dead's cover of the Assault on Precinct 13 theme is amazing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yq9fnP2i8ZA

They did this half a year ago, but I had no idea it existed until today.

John Carpenter needs to hear this shit.

Wow, I actually watched Assault on Precinct 13 for the first time last night. It was obviously a huge gaping hole in my John Carpenter fandom.

The original theme is amazing. Listening to DWTD's version now.

I find it fascinating that the four selected tracks in the article are some of the very first songs I listened to when I got into synthwave back in 2011.

That article is pretty good, love how she goes into more than just the music.

Another article on there thats good is the blade runner one.
