I can't be bothered to know who that is, so I'm guessing you've made your point. :p

I'd like to say that I 'predicted' all of the major and even most of the minor categories this year, but that feels like damning myself with faint praise. Were there any upsets at all this year - aside from, I don't know, HER?

I would say I'm surprised or disappointed at The Act of Killing not winning best doc, but historically that category and best foreign film have tended towards oddball choices more often than not. Not winning an Oscar is its own badge of pride, anyway, and arguably puts one in greater company than the reverse.

I'd say the Gatsby win was an upset, since that movie sucked.

Pretty good night overall. Very happy with the Gravity wins and though I haven't seen 12 Years A Slave, I knew it would take it. Looked deserving. Oh, and Emma Watson. Lawd have mercy.

captain Phillips is a story that has been told many times on tv movies/discovery channel shows and so on. it wasn't a bad movie but was like watching a rerun.

I haven't see wolf yet but i hope its better than 12 years a slave which I thought was fine but not overly interesting. the thing about 12 years that bothered me the most was
why he simply didn't mail the letter himself when he was in town to buy crap for his masters wife.
A Hijacking is a perfect example of a similar movie that came out not too long ago either.

I think you'll like Wolf. It was an insane, crazy wild ride.

I couldn't comment but I was here in spirit as I was on my friend's phone when watching the thing at his appartment.

I have to say that I'm very satisfied with the winners, for the first time in forever, I guess. McConaughey totally deserved his oscar, and I'm glad Let It Go won over U2. But good god, was that performance... sub-par.

Ya I thought about that too and it stumped me, and I like Wolf of wall street more. the movie shows the perfect example how money and corruption changes a person

You're probably not wrong, but I don't think it applies here. It would all boil down to our opinions of Gravity if we wanted to continue this discussion though.

Obviously people will have differing opinions. I'm just saying I'm not willing to give them the benefit of the doubt because their bias against science-fiction films is well-known, and when Gravity is winning nearly every other award, including best director, it feels like the voters were saying "I love this movie, but, best picture... it is sci-fi after all." It seems like it will take an especially historic force to break that subtle bias, like Lord of the Rings did for fantasy.

Not that science-fiction needs to be validated by Hollywood awards voters as a legitimate genre, LOL.

My personal disatisfaction with tonight was Her not winning enough.

Also, what the hell at John Travolta calling Idina Menzel someone else completely ?

Was anyone else weirded out by this? He dedicates his award to everyone who was a slave and the millions STILL in slavery and then hops up and down seven seconds later?

he dedicated himself to the work he put into this film as well as the award to fighting slavery...

a moment of joy at that moment? ...fuck yea it's allowed

It's one of my favorite films of the year, I was surprised that Joaquin Phoenix wasn't nominated.

Agreed but

"I'm just saying that I think it's bullshit. I think it's total, utter bullshit, and I don't want to be a part of it. I don't believe in it. It's a carrot, but it's the worst-tasting carrot I've ever tasted in my whole life. I don't want this carrot. It's totally subjective. Pitting people against each other ... It's the stupidest thing in the whole world.

12 Years was not best picture worthy IMO.

Shot and acted amazingly, and I'm sure the source book was very incredible, but the time dilation just didn't come across well. If the movie weren't called 12 years a slave, I would have thought the whole thing took place over a couple weeks or months.

Still, decent film, very hard to watch in parts, but I don't think it should have won the top award.

LMAFO.
Can't tell if this is real or photoshopped?

that's not her twitter account

Her name is Idina not Adela lol.

It's a new parody account thanks to Travolta. https://twitter.com/adeladazeem

That was the biggest botch of a name I've heard in a long time, hell it wasn't even a botch.

EDIT: Amazing how many people are apparently taking the parody account seriously. Also Travolta did this last year too. o_O Is this a running gag or something?

My god, he won't be nominated for anything for the rest of his life.

Time flies by when you're forced to be busy.

I thought it was a pretty decent ceremony. Outside of "The Act of Killing" losing best docu and "Her" winning best original screenplay, there were really no surprises at all. I (and I'm sure everyone else) was able to correctly predict the winners in all the major categories.

Ellen was a decent host, even though her brand of comedy is really safe and not very funny.

The "Heroes" theme was extremely dumb and pointless, as were the handful of montages scattered throughout the show. They were just filler, essentially. And did we really need a 'Wizard of Oz' + Pink segment? What was that all about? Just more padding, that's what it was all about! And at 3 1/2 hours, they really could have trimmed some of that stuff down.

And what was up with almost everyone receiving standing ovations? Save that stuff for the legends please.

Also, I know it's good to honor the legends, but if you're going to bring them out on stage, make sure they're at least able to properly say their lines. I was very uncomfortable watching Kim Novak and Sidney Poitier try to stumble out their lines. :/

12 Years was the best movie this year, despite what you think is BP worthy.

Miyazaki didn't make the better film this year IMO so even that sat well with me. Hard to really fault the way the awards went. I was surprised by The Act of Killing not getting documentary but i haven't seen most of the other nominees or the winner so can't really comment.

And not sure about Gravity for the score, just don't quite remember it, when I remember quite distinctly enjoying the score in Saving Mr Banks and Her. It is slightly strange that The Great Gatzby get two Oscars and Wolf gets none, though It did win in the right places. Would have liked Captain Philips to get something too, shame it was so competitive in the categories it excelled in. Quite happy for American Hustle to get looked over though, the same people got enough recognition for the better Silvers lining playbook.

Really happy 12 years a slave though, it deserves it.

(But Brad Pitt looks real smug on that stage, he does have a good eye though, was he up there for The. Departed too? I know he was the one who bought the remake rights.)
Between Wind Rises or Frozen though... I think Wind Rises is the better, if not the more immediately pleasing film.

I expected Act of Killing to win too, but from what I hear, 20 Feet is just one of those crowd pleasing documentaries that doesn't feel like "homework", so that's probably why it got the nod.

I went crazy for Price's score, to the point where I compared it to the silent films of yesteryear, where the score and sound design help make up for the fact that the film is silent for most of its external scenes. If the film was going to win all the sound awards, I'm happy it got the score award as well!
