I thought it was a pretty decent ceremony. Outside of "The Act of Killing" winning best docu and "Her" winning best original screenplay, there were really no surprises at all. I (and I'm sure everyone else) was able to correctly predict the winners in all the major categories.

:/

Umm it didn't win.

I forgot about Leo in the Aviator, he was outstanding in that.
I dont agree with the others, there was nothing about his acting in those movies that struck me as riveting or commanding and like I said earlier, there's a certain predictability to so many of the roles he's taken the last 10 years. that angsty, highly analytical character he plays over and over and over again.

anyways, the argument I was disagreeing with was the idea that he was best actor of his generation. I think that's rubbish,he's nowhere near as good as PSH. He has a certain consistency about his roles though, so even though he doesnt have the acting chops of someone like Johnny Depp, he's been in more superior films

Wonder how many more decades it will take before a sci-fi film finally gets best picture

JUPITER ASCENDING!!!

Yah right. Maybe when a movie will deserve one.

Gattaca is probably the only sci-fi movie that deserved one as far as I can remember, and even that is a stretch.

12 Years was not best picture worthy IMO.

Shot and acted amazingly, and I'm sure the source book was very incredible, but the time dilation just didn't come across well. If the movie weren't called 12 years a slave, I would have thought the whole thing took place over a couple weeks or months.

Still, decent film, very hard to watch in parts, but I don't think it should have won the top award.

I got the feeling people would be pissed if 12 Years didn't win best picture, it was the safest choice. I personally see Gravity as the best film of the year but oh well, Cuaron still got his props so everyone (except American Hustle and those few other movies) wins!

I agree with you about the time thing. Absolutely did not feel like 12 years at all. The sense of time passed was not pulled off well at all in that movie.

So, just got off work. Winners were pretty damn predictable.

Any highlights, lowlights? Any of the ladies look particularly astounding?

There should be a gif of Harrison Ford garbing a pizza slide around this thread.

2001: A Space Odyssey wasn't even nominated, and that's pretty much head and shoulders above most scifi.

Head and shoulders over any of the best picture nominees that year too.
Thinking too deeply on it, I wonder if Harlan Ellison would punch me in the mouth if I asked him if Gravity is sci-fi
Harlan Ellison would punch me in the mouth if I talked to him regardless. :-(

Really? The only science fiction movie in history that might have deserved best picture is Gattaca?

I'm expecting Jupiter Ascending to flop. Pretty sure Interstellar is the next big sci-fi.

Yeah Gattaca was really good. Bladerunner and Alien are up there for me, but I'm not sure what their competition was.

It's a fun, well-made family film with some catchy songs - powered by the Disney marketing machine.

It was more powered by word of mouth since they marketed the shit out of it but it did not really take off till around mid December (despite being in theaters for about almost a month)

Going in they were just "hoping" to do as good as Tangled and there was quite a bit of resistance and negative impressions from bad trailers
