8bitdo ulitmate wireless controller 2 just dropped

I ended up grabbing the Ultimate 2 Bluetooth and spent the last two days testing it on Switch and PC and I'm not sure I like it as much as I want to.

I ended up grabbing it because the SW2 Pro controller is unable to connect to anything else and I wanted something I could use for Wii U emulation.

I have two gripes with it:
  • The handles are weirdly short and I don't like the angle. I knew I wouldn't like the angle as I've owned an 8bitdo controller before but the grips feel much stubbier then the Xbox controller or Dualsense and I feel like I don't have as good control.
  • The extra bumpers are a little too easy to hit which is the opposite of my initial worry. I found while I was playing Halo that I would accidentally hit them while trying to hit the bumpers. I think it's simply the way I hold the controller as I wrap my fingers around and actually press the buttons behind the first knuckle and I keep my fingers between the triggers and bumpers so I can quickly move between the two.
I think I might just return both the Pro and the 8bitdo and just use the OG Pro controller I have since Switch 2 won't be my primary by any means.

Yeah, just keep the OG Pro man if you didn't find the new ones good...

I, on the other hand - and sorry for getting (kind of off topic) - couldn't be happier with the Ultimate 2C I've had for 3+ days :
Rumble is really really good, ergonomics also (for my hands at least), no disconnections whatsoever, HAL sticks and pretty good battery life - and this thing costs 30 Eurodollars? HOWWWW ? 😁

The price to quality ratio just can't be beat on this thing, I'm actually amazed (for once ) and can't recommend it enough.

Yeah I hope there is a firmware update on the way that will loosen this restriction. As it stands you can use it with steam OS (or just steam) but you need to jump through too many hoops and load extra programs which is 100% not worth it IMO.

Other than that grip I do love the SW2 Pro controller but from a value perspective it cannot touch the 8BitDo range.

I decided to stick with it for a bit longer as I've been playing a bunch of the Halo 3 update for Halo Infinite and I like it more then I did which unfortunately makes my decision harder 😂

I really wish the types of paddles that are on the 8bitdo and the Pro controller were on the Dualsense Edge and the Elite. I like the half moon paddles on the Edge because they are out of the way but these are just so easy to use without having to adjust grip.

Yeah, 8bitdo from a value perspective is unbeatable IMO.

Ultimate 2 works beautifully on the Switch 2 aside from not being able to wake the console. Hopefully Nintendo fixes this soon :(
Nintendo isn't going to do anything and why would they? They want you to buy their controller. 8bitdo is not an officially licensed product. It'll be up to 8bitdo themselves to figure it out. Gulikit seems to have figured it out so I'm sure it's possible. Even the OG Pro controller can't wake the Switch 2.

Considering even OG Pro Controller can't wake it I thought it might've just been a feature that Nintendo doesn't yet support. Maybe I gave them too much credit and they're just deliberately making old controllers worse in order to make you buy new ones.

Bought the purple one a month ago. Absolutely love it. Does anyone know if there is anyway to bind something like a keyboard press to one of the extra buttons? Really looking for a way to add PTT(push-to-talk) while using the controller and really hate using foot pedals.

Yeah, I would imagine that if the Switch Pro controller doesn't work then it's intentional. Similar to how there are no third party wireless Xbox controllers (though I think some of this has to do with paying for the wireless protocol Xbox uses), and why there are very few third party controllers for PlayStation 5. They want you to buy their product.

I think PowerA had some officially licensed Switch controllers that woke the device so it's possible but with 8bitdo not being officially licensed I'm not sure.

Dualsense works beautifully on the Switch 2, too, aside from not being able to wake the console using the 8BitDo USB Wireless Adapter 2 (costs less than 20 bucks).
I have one of these in a drawer somewhere but I could never use it. My brain knows that I'm holding a PlayStation controller or Xbox controller and I immediately get confused by button prompts. I don't have this issue going back and forth between Xbox and PlayStation or PC and PlayStation. It's only on Nintendo and I think it's just that I'm the least experienced with Nintendo and the layout being the same characters as Xbox confuses me for some reason (yes I know Nintendo did it first but I was never a Nintendo kid and didn't have my first Nintendo console until the Wii after years of use on PlayStation/Xbox.

Nope, only the controller buttons can be remapped to the back, which is why I don't even get what's the point of adding 4 extra buttons in the first place.

I got confused as well in the first hours. Then I just stopped looking at the buttons - problem solved. ;)

Good that you already have an OG Pro controller, just stick with it then.
Funnily enough. I read your response this morning and was like yeah I'm just gonna return it so I went on amazon and started it only to receive an option to keep the item and get a $18 refund so I took it.

Getting the Ultimate 2 for less then $48 is a no brainer as Amazon already had a 10% off coupon available for it when I bought it.

Sorry, this is about the Ultimate 2C and not the Ultimate 2, but I really need to share my experience:

I've had my Ultimate 2C for just about a month, and now it refuses to charge. As soon as I plug in the charging cable, the red status light turns on but it shuts off again after just 1-2 minutes. I've only charged it 4 or 5 times since I bought it, so this is extremely disappointing.

This is actually the second 8BitDo product to fail on me this quickly. I'm starting to wonder, is this the kind of quality one should expect from them?

I can send it back to Amazon or request an RMA, but honestly… what's to say the replacement won't die just as fast?

I had this issue and a FW update resolved it. Something about the battery not charging after fully discharged.
Was the red light blinking when battery low or would it just die?

Thanks Coffin !
Yes, the red light was blinking and on my switch 2 joypad status screen the battery showed up as almost empty.

Put it to charge to no avail since the red light would turn on for 1-2 mins only for it to turn off after that.

Plugged it into my PC to see if there were any available updates and sure enough, there was a new one which I performed immediately.

Left it on the charger after that for half an hour, started my Switch 2 up, battery showed as full, after a couple of minutes I received again the prompt to charge my controller, plugged it to my charger and...same thing, the darned thing just won't charge.

I think it's RMA time brother

Probably try a different cable too. Sounds like it's busted though

Tried with a different charger + cable combo aaaaand...nothing

Yeah, thing's busted, thank God I got it from Amazon for that hassle free refund.

2 months it lasted, that's a new record, hope that 8bit do's general quality isn't completely shite cause I'm gonna order a new 2C but, I'm soured with this whole experience tbh...

PS : I feel somewhat relieved taking back to Amazon the Ultimate 2 which I exchanged for an official Ninty Pro 2 today.

This might be the thread to ask I guess but, there's no 3rd party controllers for PC so far that has the dual sense features like the haptics and adaptive triggers right?

There are plenty with rumble (like the Scuff, 8BitDo, etc) and even higher end Razer versions (that work with PC and PS5) but none that I know of that emulate the same level/quality of the DSense or DSense Edge.

I do not like the Flydigi line of controllers...but that's just a personal thing on my end.
This might do what you want (or emulate it):
FlyDigi Apex 4

Try GameSir Super Nova, this thing can go as low as $35 with a charging station...

App is extra clean too.

Faceplate is magnetic and you can change ABXY to either Xbox or Nintendo style.

You can also order white or black separate faceplate to personalise it.

Damn, that sucks.

I have over a dozen 8bitdo products and aside from some quirks and annoyances, especially involving Switch 2, I haven't had any outright fail on me like that. In fact, the only battery related issue I've had with any of my stuff was with the 2c model. I wonder if they cheaped out a little too much on that one, as that is their "budget" controller.

Yeah, FlyDigi Vader 4 espacially is the most affordable one right now it's off on Chinese sites from like $147 to $90.

Feels the most premium out of all controllers I had so far.

Giallo Corsa Giallo Corsa Super Nova is similar in size to Ultimate and Ultimate 2, grips are rubberised at least it feels like that to me.

Back buttons feel better than those on Ultimate also, playstation style bumpers and triggers plus thumbsticks are the same as on DualSense.

It can work with Switch, PC, Android.

Sticks go to 1000hz polling rate.

No profiles, the thing that looks like profile diodes indcate connection mode PC,Switch, Android.

But you can map and de map back buttons on the fly. And also put macros on them without an app.

The same goes with hair trigger mode and turbos.

So M plus one of the back button and then button you want to map and press back button again, if you want to clean settings pres M plus on of the back buttons and again back button (blank).

It has Switch controller profile so no elbow touching like on Ultimate. My wrists don't hurt like sometimes they did on Ultimate.

Buggy Loop Buggy Loop you can also search for some GuliKit controllers. They won't have adaptive triggers but their patented Maglev motors are something cool. It can actually do similar vibration to DualSense.

KK3 PRO/Max has those for example.

But do not pay MRSP for those since GuliKit has weird design choices like the add springs in bumpers (why??) and their triggers are kind of wonky, I mean they end really weird, like before they hit the end (might be their idea of dampening I guess).

Edit: Search the local used market they are sometimes sold for like $35 unsealed and new. Anything above that is not worth it.

I'll go ahead and put this here too, since this thread is kinda the defacto 8bitdo related hangout as of late. This is the first wireless on Xbox 8bitdo controller. It's on the spendy side, and hideous, IMO, but hopefully they offer other options soon!

Ended up buying the wukong wireless controller for PC. This controller is a steal for the price. Its really high quality. Loving the sticks, the tension is great and its super smooth. Bumpers are also really good, buttons and dpad aswell :D

One thing with using Ultimate 2 on Switch 2… the rumble is like 100x stronger than the Joycons.

In DK Bananza when you're smashing terrain, it's like trying to game with my wife's Magic Wand. I don't even want to let my kids use this thing and give them any ideas.

Is there some way to turn down the rumble in the PC app? I don't want to disable it altogether, just make it more like the Joycons instead of a sex toy.

FYI they made a new version of the Ultimate for mobile. States it works with Apple ios and can confirm it really doesn't. In case someone out there wanted to grab it for iphone. Misses every other input when using retroarch. My guess is firmware issue.

That's an ultimate 2C, right ?
Does the wireless version work on the S2 ?

I have questions.

You can drag the slider down to 1 on both sides.

Which of those 8bitdo controllers work with a switch 2? If possible on a cheaper side.

I saw this earlier and it's one of the ugliest controllers I've ever seen. This is on the same level as the super cheap PowerA switch controllers with those tacky ass patterns.

Hopefully they put out a standard black/white version.
