A polite discourse amongst friends on the importance of MP-elements in No Man's Sky

The times of day are different because there is no actual persistence between each players universe (other than planet/species names). When you quit or pause the game it has been effectively frozen in time, meaning that when you un-pause or start the game the universe continues from where you left off (like all single player games). This right here is why multiplayer in NMS is not possible (other than the planet/species names thing).

That makes sense. I haven't jumped in myself so I am not sure how it works, thanks for clarifying. Still could be a server issue or could be that he was lying. I have no clue, but I'm not gonna jump to a conclusion until I either see more evidence or get a reasonable real explanation from Hello Games.

Mercilessly attacking Sean Murray's personal integrity when we don't have all the facts or an official response is pretty insensitive.

My fault for not reading the caption

As others have said this was an easy question to answer and he chose not too.

Plus I'm almost certain he said you'd be able to interact in the super small chance you get to meet someone

If only more people in this thread had your frame of mind...so many are so quick to hurl personal insults and it's sad and pathetic

Someone just check bottom left of the screen in game to see if the online servers are up or not. I know for a fact earlier they were down.

Saddens me lol. I'd happily pay $60 for this on Xbox haha. Single player? Multiplayer? Who cares. I just want to explore an entire universe at my leisure.

Apparently a lot of people care. That's why this thread exists and why people have been acting hysterical.

If you don't care, good for you, but don't just say who cares when obviously people in this thread are "discussing" the topic

But....I didn't. I said it's ok to be invested in the game and it seems pretty great....which is completely contrary to the contingent on here that seems to want to hate it no matter what. I fully acknowledge that. Fact remains that the dev has stated MULTIPLE TIMES that multiplayer was in. With the little caveat that the game is just soooooo biiiiigggg that you'll probably never encounter another player.

What they failed to anticipate is that redditors, like redditors ALWAYS FUCKING DO, managed to land in the same location at the same time within HOURS of play and confirm that the developer is, in fact, a god damn liar lol. Of course that's barring the extremely unlikely scenario that they just haven't gotten around to implementing multiplayer or other technical issues. I'm pretty eagerly awaiting a statement from the dev here, because honestly I won't be buying this without multiplayer. I know, I know that's not the selling point for the game. For you. For me, however it is. I pretty much exclusively play multiplayer games these days, it was a promised feature, game will be significantly less cool for me without the chance of random player encounters and If it's not in then neither am I. This is why I never pre order. It shouldn't take the Reddit investigation squad to confirm that a promised feature is absent from the game, they should have been up front about it. Again, game seems awesome hope everybody is enjoying it.

I agree with this.

The fact that we had to find out through reddit of all places is downright fucking shameful.

What a bittersweet moment, I want to support indie devs as I always do, but not when I'm lied to.

NMS is no longer a day one PC purchase for me.

Just a quick comment: if anyone's expecting the developer to comment soon. They are in the UK and it's like just after 4am here. So 'if' anyone comments, it won't be for a while.

Just a good thing to keep in mind since this thread is likely to get a lot bigger before the start of the work day here... probably.

Get the absolute entire fuck out of here with this shit. Jesus. Women being forced out of their homes from constant harassment and death threats is not even fucking comparable to people questioning whether Murray used ambiguity/deceit to prevent a slowdown on the hype machine on his game.

Oh fucking snap.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned but someone on the Twitch chat when this was all going down earlier was pretty insistent that you could only see another actual player if they happened to be in the same instance as you. I am not sure what their source was but it sort of made sense with everything I've heard so far. He also said that you could load into a new instances after dying or sleeping. The two guys that were trying to find each other didn't seem to want to try this. I didn't watch the stream too long since I was at work but the whole thing was funny and intriguing.

I'll admit that I thought that there was a multiplayer component up until about 4-6 weeks ago.

I would rather wake up to the bathroom hag in The Shining than what Sean will wake up to. The Seaning?

I'm not sure why this is a controversy. The developers were very clear that this isn't a multiplayer game.

Read the damn quote in the op from the developer himself from 2 weeks ago. Also, look at the dozens of links posted in this thread of Murray being ambiguous about the multiplayer component in No Man's sky. It only became "clear" today.

So first I was accused of having a financial stake in the game, now I'm supposedly trying to have sex with Sean Murray.

What a disastrous thread full of absurdly angry gamers.

Users here are in no way above being disingenuous for an opportunity to be an asshole.

To bo honest, I've wondered about this for a long time. They never gave a definitive answer. They seemed to imply that if two players were in the same spot, they could see each other, but it was so rare that it would never happen.

Oh grow up. Sean has had months to say how this works but he chose Pr and low probabilities instead. He should yell at the statistics guy since they probably assumed we wouldn't figure this out for a few weeks atleast.

There's a whole interview at game informer where he is detailing the whole flying lobby that is following the player at all times. It's like he's detailing a system that just doesn't exist.

I don't understand how it's anything but a straight up lie.

I don't think the thread is disastrous....I think the devs got caught in a big lie. Whether or not THAT turns out to be disastrous remains to be seen.

Don't buy this game man. Why would you buy a game for a feature that the developer mentions is not the point of the game and unlikely to even be experienced by the vast majority of players in the game? Even if it turns out that meeting others is possible this still isn't going to be the game you want it to be.
I'm not buying the game and wasn't really planning to because it seemed to overhyped to be true. Still, when redditors manage to meet the conditions for multiplayer within HOURS of release I find your claims of 'extremely unlikely' to be frankly laughable. What are you trying to prove here? That it's ok they lied about a feature that millions of gamers consider core to their experience? Don't tell me how to manage my expectations, my hype for this game has been zero all along. I'm merely commenting on the situation.

Does your game have multiplayer? If yes then say yes. If not, don't tell people that it does. This isn't rocket science and you aren't going to justify it by telling me what types of games I should/shouldn't play or how to manage my expectations. Don't be absurd.

Posted as recently as Monday at noon. This message is no different than the hundred other bloody times he's said it. Not his fault a bunch of fuck wits read into his words as if they were a puzzle.

Sorry for the mobile link. Can't be helped at the moment.

Not entirely sure why anybody would be upset about this unless they're intentionally trying to stir up shit for some obscure reason. It's maddeningly stupid.

That image is a pretty unnecessary.

I wish more people had your mind set...
Discussing games day 1 would be a lot more enjoyable
There's an OT if you want uncompromisingly positive discussion and nothing else.

Thats what they said... Appears to not be the case but everybodies pretty much still in the dark since the devs havnt spoken up/responded

I didn't doubt the authenticity of the cover with the sticker initially, but I'm surprised no one in Spain has been able to reconfirm it (AFAIK).

First off, it seems to be one of those cardboard sleeves that fits over the case. Do we know if the game even shipped in any region with that? The copies I've seen don't have them.

And speaking of copies we've seen, why does this version have the Havok logo and it's not on the Spanish version?

Here's another game from Spain that does have Havok on the back, so it's not like this is something that gets removed in that region.

With 18,000,000,000,000,000,000 planets, it does imply that the starter systems are not random or possibly unique...

Thats not 'getting lucky', thats worse than if I hid a grain of sand someplace on the earth and you asked you to find it.

Rather than luck, there is some other mechanism at work to link up so quickly.

There's always a chance.

If I wrote a random number generator that went up to 18,000,000,000,000,000,000 and said there is a near 0% chance that you won't get sequential numbers, I wouldn't be lying. However, if it happened, you can't just assume I was lying or made it easier to get those sequential numbers. No matter how unlikely it is, it happened.

Apparently it wasn't rare at all.

But I'm glad a few other people do remember that in actual fact the chances of finding the same planet as another player was said to be rare, by the game's creator no less. Yet here we are with two players finding the same planet within hours and yet the biggest surprise is that they couldn't see each other.

When the real question mark should be over one of the core selling points of the game, the way it was constantly thrown about that this game was massive in scope, infinite in size (according to the official no man's sky website).

You're absolutely right, and the fact it happened could be down to unlikely odds that just so happened.

When it becomes a problem is when suddenly thousands of people on the internet start finding the exact same planets as each other....

So the servers are down.

But lets just ignore that. Some of y'all get way to excited and angry over seeing things/people fail.

Impretty sure the 2 guys trying to meet up have been at it for several hours... Cant confirm though.. I also heard they tried multiple locations..

Are you kidding me? It's in direct conflict with his comment in the op from 2 weeks ago. The message is a complete mess and you live in a fantasy world if you think otherwise.
