A polite discourse amongst friends on the importance of MP-elements in No Man's Sky

I am trying to figure out what's happening. The title of the stream is "Getting warp fuel to get back to sadcactus"

Last night one of them jumped and didn't have enough to get back.

The naming stuff is linked to online too so if they were offline when they named stuff last night, maybe their data didn't upload.

Yep if they aren't seeing the correct names then something is going wrong, so it's not exactly the best test scenario.

They are both offline again now, so whatever they are trying doesn't seem to be working.

Because the fact that nobody knows is a problem. People would like it answered. If the developers just put a quick Tweet online with it, then it is over. But they don't for some reason.

Earlier in this thread you said it is there. Now you say it isn't. So what do you think actually?

Don't let him weasel out of answering this one, he is clearly hell bent on stopping any negative discussion, had Sean lied or not.

Right why do people go by old information is literally 2 days ago that is what the guy said. Ive never even thought of this game as being multiplayer. I just dont understand where all of this was lost in translation.
He said that exact thing ages ago when he was still saying you can run into and see other players. He said 'single player really, but yeah you'll run into other people who can see you!'

He seems to have misled

He said in interviews that players could kill each other. He also said that we could see other players, but he was pretty clear that the possibility was next to zero. He probably thought people wouldn't get the ability to try this in such a massive universe. Now people have caught him lying, and he simply refuses to give us a straight answer, and he probably won't. This shouldn't go unnoticed by the community.

We don't know if he was lying or something else is the issue.

Me personally isn't saying he is lying right now, just that his messaging is poor as hell.

But it's "poor as hell" on purpose. He obviously knows people are wondering about this. We know they look at reddit, Twitter, NeoGAF. So he's purposely being cagey. So either he knows something we don't or he's straight-up lying.

I choose to believe that he's trying to keep the "mystery" alive, but time will tell...

Isn't he 18 quintillion thing referencing the universe? Why are we looking at just one galaxy? Unless I'm misunderstanding and there is only 1 galaxy in the game.

I'm going to be really curious to see what Sean's first tweet of the day will be after all the drama over night. If his first tweet does not directly address this issue that will be epic.

I don't see how players could possible meet. From a technical standpoint, it would be an absolutely massive undertaking.

Planets need to be hosted locally. There's no way they can afford to host millions of server instances for a game that is 99.9% single player according to probabilities.

I would assume that each planet discovery gets saved server side and the local instance synchronizes with the server at some point. But how much data actually synchronizes? Probably just basic things such as species names. If be surprised if terrain deformation is synchronized because then all of that data would have to be stored server side.

Can you imagine how much data it would take to store millions of planet sized instances complete with terrain deformation? I don't even think Petabytes of storage would be enough.

Logic tells me that planets are simply stored as a random seed which is used by the local client to generate the actual instance. Beyond that, only basic things such as species names are stored server side.

Terran deformation isn't synchronized as well. That they actually confirmed.

I believe it was either if you leave a planet or its system, it will reset.

Are we expecting nuanced opinions of entitled gamers now?

This is taking 'the ending of mass effect 3 sucks balls therefore Bioware must die' proportions.

Come on guys. Take a breath, and let's take a 'real life' stance of things.

There are apparently multiple galaxies, but everyone starts in the same one. Galaxies are still massive, though.

Multiple times over the course of two years of development, Sean said things to the effect of "you can see other players." If that's not true, he lied. If development plans changed and they didn't implement it, they should say that. People in this thread have actually been really civil and I don't see people demanding the game be changed, but I do see people who want to know if a promised feature was pulled with the only notification being a vague tweet less than a full day before release.

That doesn't sound like "entitlement" to me.

I fully expect an explanation via tweet / statement within the next 2-3 hours since it is later afternoon where Hello Games is located. I would wager that whatever caused those two players to not see each other is and has been getting investigated.

Possible explanations:

1. Regional servers (the players aren't from the same country or something? Not sure.)
2. It's a bug.
3. Servers are over loaded.
4. Being able to see players is only possible after reaching a certain point in the game?
5. He lied and should exit the gaming industry forever.

Wanna bet? That wont be addressed until next week once steam sales are secured, then he will say that it will come in a later update.

What if it is a feature but it has been cut on PS4 and not on PC? Thus Sony is forcing Sean to not say anything till after the PC release to keep PS4 sales stable.

DUN DUN DUUUUUN!

Sony was behind this all along.

What haha. So dog pile, shit talk, attack but don't dare try to act reasonable. We have been told there is some kind of player meet up. So far we don't know either way.

Those two guys test was flawed. Servers were toast. What more do you want to hear.

A short aside:

This reminds me very much of the Destiny "you see those mountains? you can go there" debacle. People were linking interviews about overstated promises/features, and the reality of what was released. The defense on Gaf was also verrry similar. It was also along the lines of "things change in game development," or "it's not even a big deal, why do you even care? get over it" or "I don't see how that's dishonest/shady."

It's weird that some gamers go through such lengths to defend a game they like. You can love a game and be critical of the devs behind it. It's not hard. And just like Destiny, this comes down to a lack of communication up until launch.

It's not even defending a game they like. It's defending a game they sometimes doesn't even know yet, games that they're only hyped at.

I will not say Sean Murray straight up lied to us just yet. I have a very strong feeling he is avoiding answer it clearly cause he knows he never cleared that up and that he is not delivering exactly what he said he would, BUT I will give it a week before forming an definitive opinion about this situation.

someone make a new thread about the sticker shit.

couldn't give much of a toss about NMS to be honest but a publisher putting stickers over features that are on the box in other countries to avoid litigation is some hilariously scuzzy shit and much bigger than this game.

Sean said for years that this game had multiplayer functionality where you can see other players and play with your friends, and then he tweets that this is a single player game mere hours before the game release and that means we were all stupid for expecting multiplayer functionality?

I honestly don't get this logic.

I'll quote myself:

We ARE playing together, with our friends, online, in separate instances within the same galaxy-server. Sean has never lied about that fact. And that falls under the "Online" stickers on the boxes.

The ONLY thing he needs to answer is why we can't SEE each other at the moment, when we're face to face in the same spot. That's the ONLY thing that needs clarification.

These guys can barely manage to stream at the same time, I don't think we will find out anything else today.

When one streams the other cuts off.

Now at least they both are in the same named system, but the stream isnt working so we can't see anything.

There are apparently multiple galaxies, but everyone starts in the same one. Galaxies are still massive, though.
In that case why are people saying they lied about the number of planets? Obviously if we're all starting in the same galaxy the odds aren't 1 in 18 quintillion.

Things do change during development though, I don't get upset at silly stuff like "broken promises" or whatever. I don't own a PS4 so I don't have a stake in this at all but I see this as poor communication from the devs and a hungry fanbase whipping themselves in to a frenzy over nothing of consequence

Please explain to me how wanting a clear message on something that you paid money for is being entitled. Especially with MONTHS of conflicting information.

Had this game been free, you would have a point.

I do wonder if some of you would be defending the dev if this was any other game.

Please, don't post this image.

People here will think Sean said they can have a tug-of-war with a Captain America Shield in No Man's Sky.

They'll call Sean a liar when they find out they can't.

That false equivalence

For the 100th time, we want Sean confirm or deny whether or not the feature exists. Undeniably confirm or deny, not acting coy. That is it.

Honestly think it's somewhere between 1 and 4. It's just so weird that he hasn't been forthcoming at ALL about it.

What would be funny tho, is that the answer is number 4, and he doesn't want to tell people because he doesn't want to spoil late game (he's always been very anti-spoilers), and is willing to sacrifice his reputation to prevent spoilers. Good Guy Sean. lol

But you are defending both "sides". First you say: it is there, it is just a bug / server overload / whatever. Then you say the interviews are old, the Tweet is new, so there is no multiplayer. So yes, we don't know either way. That is the problem and why this thread is so big.

Going to leave this here.

Thank you. This only proves my point:

Never did he say we could GROUP UP and explore/fight/trade/survive the galaxy together.

As I've posted repeatedly: We ARE playing together, with our friends, online, in separate instances within the same galaxy-server. Sean has never lied about that fact. And that falls under the "Online" stickers on the boxes.

All he said was we could SEE each other at some point. Nothing beyond that.

In one interview he said you can meet up with your friends. That's technically true but highly improbable though. He was asked to give a yes or no answer to a question that is a lot more complicated.

It's remarkable how many of us knew very early on what type of experience this was yet people keep showing up claiming they were sold on this being a multiplayer game and that you could meet up and play with your friends like it was a regular thing.
Is it? Things point to nope but please enlighten us.
