A Tale of 'Merica and Milk - I just walked out and abandoned a job interview. FML.

And this is why you wait until you actually have an offer in hand to decide not to pursue the company. Jeez, I'm feeling panic attacks almost by association looking at that.

Seriously, your choices weren't limited to a) eat crap, wait and take the job or b) walk out and make a stand. You could have just easily waited, found out the information, then made the call that you didn't want to work there later.

Now? You'd better hope the interviewer didn't pass that around the area. You may have burned more than one bridge today.

See, normally I'd feel some sympathy for somebody in your situation. I lucked out with my job, I work for family. But I'm aware how tough it is out there for job seekers nowadays. I've interviewed people before.

But I feel zero sympathy for you. You pretty much ruined this on your own. In every conceivable way, you have fucked up.

Yeah, this. Don't let people treat you like shit. That is why the whole system is rigged. Way too many people just accept being treated like that.

Complain about "the system" all you want, OP still ain't getting fucking paid. Should've asked the secretary for an update and waited it out.

So

Let's review.

Based on a misunderstanding and an inflated sense of pride, you torpedoed this job interview, very likely made yourself a joke in professional IT community in Atlanta, and embarrassed yourself on a personal level.

My suggestion? Try Tennessee or Alabama. They might not be laughing about it there yet.

You could at least have asked the receptionist you had down for small talk if that much a wait was normal or not. Then you probably would have saved yourself that much of a mess and might have gotten a job.

Have you seen that Seinfeld episode where he says to G. Constanza to start doing the opposite of what he usually does so his life gets better?

It worked for me, it could work for you...

I can't believe he even signed it with "thanks" :lol

Probably automated as part of his sig. I made a point of removing that from my signature and manually typing it or something more appropriate each time so that people felt like I was actually thanking them when they saw it.

Yup, and the guy was actually nicer and more professional than the OP ... OP fucked up for sure ...

Exactly.

The only professional in this situation was the manager and the receptionist. Thacker comes across as an unprofessional arrogant boor. If somebody came to me with that same attitude, I wouldn't give him a second glance, no matter his credentials.

both sides are complete shits in this scenario. OP you fucked up sending that email. dude is also a complete asshat for lecturing you about the company process that you weren't educated on, and made no attempt to do so when you arrived.

i don't know where this sentiment that you didn't wait long enough or that you're entitled comes from, though. i've job searched multiple times the last 10 years and not once did I have someone a) ignore me completely for 45 minutes and/or b) blame me for not knowing information that I was incapable of knowing without their direct input. move on and let this guy continue to be a passive-aggressive shit.

So does walking out of a job interview because someone didn't greet you when you felt they should have greeted you.

yeah it's weird how the smallest courtesy in a professional environment goes a long way right? that guy certainly earned the right to ignore potential hires because of his stature within the company.

He just replied guys

Hold on and I'll post a transcript.

edit:

"xxxx,

I was not running behind.

You simply do not understand our interview process and because of that you walked out on your interview before we got a chance to speak to you.

I did not expect, nor did I tell you that I would start talking to you at 3p. I expected you would arrive at 3p to start our interview process and you would stay until we finished.

We allow 30-45 minutes for the paperwork to be done before interviewing candidates.

It's great that you came in early and finished your paperwork quickly, but that did not change when we were expecting to bring you back for your in person interview.

It's disappointing and unprofessional that you chose to leave your interview early. When I came out to get you, xxxx said you just walked out.

Perhaps next time you should ask about the process before making so many assumptions and leaving in the middle of your interview in a huff.

Thanks for the feedback and for coming in.

Good luck in your job search,"

A reasonable, polite and utterly predictable response. At least we know for sure that one of you knows how to act professional.

Let this be a life lesson dude. Or not. The more people like you out there the less I ever have to worry about being unemployed.

Or, hey, there's always the option of learning another language and going overseas.

Although there's always the risk the mail was translated for posting on foreign job areas...

Thacker could have, I dunno, asked the receptionist if she could speak with the manager. He could have directly spoken with the manager. He could have asked for a reschedule if the manager is too busy.

Nah, he was just a dick, and then compounded that by being a passive-aggressive dick via e-mail.

Dude. You fucked up

Boss was probably too busy dealing with shit that happens. You should have waited. Its not the end of the world.

This. I honestly am surprised and GAF's opinions at times... and this thread is one of those.

The previous day he told me to contact him at 4 for the phone interview. I called at 4 and he said he was on the other line... to please call him back 10 minutes later. I did so, and the phone interview went as planned. He invited me up for an interview at 3 and we confirmed the address. He never stated that I would need to fill out a formal application and take a skills assessment test. The receptionist never said I would be waiting any sort of time. In fact right after I finished the paperwork she said "as soon as he opens his door I will take you back"

All you can do now is hope and pray that your credentials can get you another opportunity. Learn from this mistake, and try to make the best out of it. This is a prime reason why you don't burn any bridges.

Shit, I've waited longer for doctors appointments lol

I waited three hours for a doctor's appointment.

For a blood test.

In America.

Waiting 45 minutes is nothing if you know you're going to be seen. Learn to wait, especially if you don't have other places as none have been stated thus far in this topic. Fill out an application and wait to be seen...this happens beyond interviews, clearly.

Did you wait that long to happen? Because dude, right now you are looking crazy delusional, trying to create confirmation bias to put the blame on some other person than you, when all information specifically points at you being the uh oh.

I'm surprised that he actually responded to your e-mail.

What I wouldn't give to have a video of when the boss received his email.

You need to stop this now. This is 100% your fault, and you're going to continue to fuck up if you don't realize this.

And we all get to feel smug about it.

I mean...yes? There's no point where I would feel it too great an obstruction to ask the person whose job it is to help me what's taking so long. If he had only done that, those few words, he would be fine. He had time to write 500 words for a GAF thread.

I have little to no issue saying I'm above that.

You should have yelled at the secretary about Peruvian interviewers and started running into the wall to teach her a lesson about fucking with Thacker.

Stop laying the blame on others for not asking a simple question that would have sorted this all out immediately.

I probably would've waited but I don't blame you. I don't take well to authority or people acting with some sense of superiority. Business owner or not, he agreed to meet you at a certain time and did fuck all about it.

I told a person to eat shit when they called me ungrateful once

I would much rather prefer Thacker have a damn opportunity for a job than feel smug about anything.

I was making fun of the people in here. The smugness is off the charts. People in here act like they've never fucked up before, and would rather point and laugh at the op.

Nah, he was just a dick, and then compounded that by being a passive-aggressive dick via e-mail.

he certainly should've asked what the deal was, but given his description, it sounds like the guy assumed Thacker would've known that he'd be waiting at least 45 minutes to start the actual interview, when that doesn't seem to be the case. unless Thacker ignored this information or is purposely leaving it out. i'm only going on the description of the events he gave.

Isn't this the guy who was having trouble getting a job because of some past legal issue?
And he couldn't sit down and wait for the interview?
I don't think you're serious about wanting to work if you're going to be that impatient.

OP you're going to be fine. Just suck it up and keep trying. I have had to wait as well. I know you asked for feedback about your decisions but, try not to take all the negative comments to heart man.

Get out there. Maybe when you do land something, you can look back at this and laugh. That's what makes life interesting. I may not agree with what you did but, I commend you making that kind of BIG decision.

At the very least, the interview process worked.

IIRC, you have to take a skills based test to even apply to a job at Target...

Why would you assume, especially with certifications that may need to be proven in the IT field, that you wouldn't be tested or given an application?

Now I know you're trolling us, and I'm getting even more pissed out at you.

So does walking out of a job interview because someone didn't greet you when you felt they should have greeted you.
Didn't say I disagree it was extremely bad form and a dumb mistake to make, but I'm not digging through his post history to rub his fucking nose in it either. That's kinda weird.

Everyone leaves 30-60 minutes for the paperwork. For goodness sake, learn this.

Two things

1. You really should have asked what was up before leaving.

2. What a prick. "We allow 30 to 45 minutes" for people to complete their paperwork. I think when the secretary walks in and gives you the completed paperwork that's a cue that the paperwork is completed.

Long story short you were right to be offended but wrong to leave without first asking for an update, but you're no worse off for not having a job with the guy.

Also, what the fuck at the subject of his email. "I'm expecting to interview you today". Already treating you like he owns you. Forget that place.

This was very stupid on Thacker's part.

The manager is busy, and if things come up, the interview will be bumped.

Thacker - you need to un-fuck yourself and pull that stick out of your arse.

So unprofessional. You have now become a funny story told to other prospective interviewees on what NOT to do.

Don't sweat it, OP. Just learn from it and move on. Besides, that guy was probably not someone you'd want to work for if he's unable to manage his or your time.
