A Tale of 'Merica and Milk - I just walked out and abandoned a job interview. FML.

This. I honestly am surprised and GAF's opinions at times... and this thread is one of those.

The previous day he told me to contact him at 4 for the phone interview. I called at 4 and he said he was on the other line... to please call him back 10 minutes later. I did so, and the phone interview went as planned. He invited me up for an interview at 3 and we confirmed the address. He never stated that I would need to fill out a formal application and take a skills assessment test. The receptionist never said I would be waiting any sort of time. In fact right after I finished the paperwork she said "as soon as he opens his door I will take you back"

You needed a job. He was clearly busy that day. You could have made a concession. You could have asked the receptionist for an update or to speak with the boss because you couldn't wait there all day.

You had options. You took none of them. You just walked out like a putz.

I was making fun of the people in here. The smugness is off the charts. People in here act like they've never fucked before, and would rather point and laugh at the op.

I don't feel smug, I feel incredulous.

Because I can't fathom somebody actually shooting off their foot like that.

yeah it's weird how the smallest courtesy in a professional environment goes a long way right? that guy certainly earned the right to ignore potential hires because of his stature within the company.

For all we know, the boss is a great guy, who was busy, assumed some stuff (like Thatcher was busy filling out paperwork for a while) and was having a hectic day. If the act of not greeting someone before you have the chance to actually have an interview is some sort of... ghastly sin, well I can't imagine what you would rank some of the stuff my current boss has done. My boss, who is a great guy who works so hard for his employees, is not always the best at what some might consider professional etiquette, but he is sincere and thoughtful and really just a good person.

In my interview I got to his office before he was even there, he actually forgot about the interview and came like 20+ minutes late while I patiently waited in a room alone. He sheepishly apologized when he saw me, we talked, and he liked me a lot and offered me a job on the spot. Been here almost a year and it's the best job I've ever had by like... unfathomable levels. He is the best boss I've ever had, and fuck I travelled the US for the first time in my life because he wanted me to come along to a conference, and it was a amazing experience.

What if I had walked out in a huff?

All of this is fucking irrelevant Thacker. You are not in a position to be picky or let your ego get in the way. Next time ask the receptionist about the process or just suck it up and be patient. Now you leave your job opportunities to chance. It might work out it might not. In the position you are in now you should not leave anything to chance. Sometimes shit happens or other people are unprofessional. That's life, and to make matters worse you might have sabotaged your chances at another company by burning this bridge the way you did.

IIRC, you have to take a skills based test to even apply a job at Target...

Why would you assume, especially with certifications that may need to be proven, that you wouldn't be tested or given an application?

Now I know you're trolling us, and I'm getting even more pissed out at you.

I fully expected to fill out some sort of application. Hence why I arrived 15 minutes early to handle all of that AS TO NOT WASTE ANY EXTRA TIME THAT HE HAD SCHEDULED OUT OF RESPECT FOR HIM AND HIS BUSINESS.

I was making fun of the people in here. The smugness is off the charts. People in here act like they've never fucked up before, and would rather point and laugh at the op.

Oh, we've all fucked up plenty.
I've fucked up many more times than I can count.

But, I don't make a thread after I fucked up about how I was right, and emailing the other person telling them how much of a poopy-head they were.
None of us would've known anything about it were it not for this thread. But, this thread is here, so we're commenting on it as appropriate.

He just replied guys

Hold on and I'll post a transcript.

"xxxx,

I was not running behind.

You simply do not understand our interview process and because of that you walked out on your interview before we got a chance to speak to you.

I did not expect, nor did I tell you that I would start talking to you at 3p. I expected you would arrive at 3p to start our interview process and you would stay until we finished.

We allow 30-45 minutes for the paperwork to be done before interviewing candidates.

It's great that you came in early and finished your paperwork quickly, but that did not change when we were expecting to bring you back for your in person interview.

It's disappointing and unprofessional that you chose to leave your interview early. When I came out to get you, xxxx said you just walked out.

Perhaps next time you should ask about the process before making so many assumptions and leaving in the middle of your interview in a huff.

Thanks for the feedback and for coming in.

Good luck in your job search,"

now you know you fucked up right? at every single interview I have ever been in, EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. I have always have to wait. always. i'm sorry but you aren't in a position to pick and choose.

YOU. MADE. THE MISTAKE.

Own up to it before you fuck yourself out of another potential job.

True. Thanks for the input.

Really, digging into the OP's past post history to bring that up and make fun of it is "appropriate"? OP did not have the share the follow up email for the boss at all. It makes him look stupid and torpedoes his whole stance, but he did it anyway. I can give him some respect for that.

Two things

1. You really should have asked what was up before leaving.

2. What a prick. "We allow 30 to 45 minutes" for people to complete their paperwork. I think when the secretary walks in and gives you the completed paperwork that's a cue that the paperwork is completed.

Long story short you were right to be offended but wrong to leave without first asking for an update, but you're no worse off for not having a job with the guy.

Also, what the fuck at the subject of his email. "I'm expecting to interview you today". Already treating you like he owns you. Forget that place.

They ALLOW it, meaning they schedule accordingly. The manager can't tell his other appointments "Hey, this guy may finish sometime between now and then so our meeting will have start at one of these times based on when they finish." No, they give the candidates ample time and schedule their own activities accordingly. The manager is in no way in the wrong for not changing his schedule to suit Thacker's early arrival and early completion of the paperwork.

If the process wasn't outlined clearly or they miscommunicated, that's a separate issue, but there's nothing wrong with the way they handled that aspect of the process.

That sounds like a really awesome dude. If you don't mind me asking, what is the vocation?

Surprised at what? That you were unprofessional and left a job opportunity that you seem to desperately need?

Also, he doesn't have to explain anything ... it's very possible he was so busy and in such a rush to replace what he lost that he just didn't have time to go over every little thing for you ... please don't expect to be employed anytime soon if you continue to have this attitude ...

This is when you put your petty "small talk" with the receptionist aside and ask adult questions like "sorry, but I just wanted to double-check on when my interview beings." Are you not 27? Can you not be arsed to ask another adult a question about the situation before you act? If this is how you apply yourself to real world situations, I have little faith in how you will handle your day-today work.

Uh, yeah, I think you fucked up.

I personally would have asked the secretary if she knew how much longer it might be or if there was a reason for the delay.

If I felt the need to leave, I would have at least try to reschedule at the least and not burn bridges.

But, you did what you did, so good luck to ya.

Or, hey, there's always the option of learning another language and going overseas.

Although there's always the risk the mail was translated for posting on foreign job areas...
I'm honestly surprised at how bloodthirsty you are acting. OP must have really rubbed you the wrong way in one of his older threads.

Didn't say I disagree it was extremely bad form and a dumb mistake to make, but I'm not digging through his post history to rub his fucking nose in it either. That's kinda weird.

Well, one of those threads was just the other day, and I had posted in.
And the other one I remembered as well.

While I did give a quick scan to find the 3rd one (he only has 1 page of threads created, it took all of 30 seconds), it's not like it was some involved process or something.

I'm honestly surprised at how bloodthirsty you are acting. OP must have really rubbed you the wrong way in one of his older threads.

It's just rather comical coming on the heels of the Target thread the other day.

This.

I can't "afford" it... but at the same time I honestly don't want to take a position I know I would immediately be looking to bail on anyway. The first red flag was when she said two techs had left the previous week unannounced. This was a small company of 8 people and the position paid very well, stated salaries up to the mid 70k depending on experience. While I never asked about the delay some other red flags came up such as the receptionist stating how overworked she felt and how her role actually handles.

It felt like a really sketchy situation with how rushed the hiring process was to begin with... but then for this to happen it just made me want to bail out.
70k? Christ, what is wrong with you?

I fully expected to fill out some sort of application. Hence why I arrived 15 minutes early to handle all of that AS TO NOT WASTE ANY EXTRA TIME THAT HE HAD SCHEDULED OUT OF RESPECT FOR HIM AND HIS BUSINESS.

you only got there early because you didn't want to be late. just because someone is applying that day doesn't mean he has to drop everything else. sometimes you have to be squeezed in. you aren't an employee yet, you aren't the top priority.

You realize that he probably had things planned in that time he allotted for you to fill that out? He wasn't sitting in the room waiting for you- he was doing other things.

Doesn't OP live in Georgia? Can I get the address for that company, please? I can't remember where in GA you live, but hopefully it's not far.

Further confirmation that you made the wrong call, bro. You even made my boy Null Pointer look bad for defending you. :(

Sorry man. Hopefully you learned the lesson here to learn. GL on your next interview.

That sounds like a really awesome dude. If you don't mind me asking, what is the vocation?

Software dev - web/mobile apps. He worked a long time at the enterprise level, got tired of how that worked and started his own company. It's doing really well for itself.

I fully expected to fill out some sort of application. Hence why I arrived 15 minutes early to handle all of that AS TO NOT WASTE ANY EXTRA TIME THAT HE HAD SCHEDULED OUT OF RESPECT FOR HIM AND HIS BUSINESS.

...

You just said you didn't.

Once again, you just said:

This. I honestly am surprised and GAF's opinions at times... and this thread is one of those.

The previous day he told me to contact him at 4 for the phone interview. I called at 4 and he said he was on the other line... to please call him back 10 minutes later. In fact right after I finished the paperwork she said "as soon as he opens his door I will take you back"

Why would you assume you don't need an application or even proper paperwork procedures? Why would you assume you wouldn't take a skills based test for an IT position?

now you know you fucked up right? at every single interview I have ever been in, EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. I have always have to wait. always. i'm sorry but you aren't in a position to pick and choose.

I've never waited for an interview, and being busy isn't an excuse to be rude to someone. If you do think being busy is an excuse to be rude then you won't last long (probably why 2 people left unexpectedly from the guy's business).

Lol you got impatient waiting for 45 minutes and left? Try a job application process in my field that takes about 1.5 years.

You really are in no position to leave when you want right now. Stay and see where it takes you. Even if it turns south, you can use that as a stepping stone to move to a better or similar job.

Edit: You should have stayed... damn.

And yet, you never asked anyone what the expected schedule was once you arrived. Arriving early is good and all, but when it leads you to being ready long before the interviewer was expecting you to be ready, it doesn't help him at all when you never address him or the receptionist. The fact you knew they were shorthanded and having an issue that day makes this all the more dumbfounding.

The employer is also making a pitch that its a worthwhile enterprise to get involved in. Its a two way street and I don't see why the employer gets a free pass to do whatever.

If you can support yourself for awhile without a job, then you can think like that but if you're desperate for a job like he claims, then you need the job more than they need you. If he can't pay a bill because he decided to walk out on an interview when it sounds like he had the job, the manager won't care that Thacker didn't appreciate him being late, so what was the point? Will his misplaced "pride" (it was really just him being stupid) keep the lights on?

Really, digging into the OP's past post history to bring that up and make fun of it is "appropriate"?

I know I posted this response to someone else after your post, but just to reply to this as well:

Well, one of those threads was just the other day, and I had posted in.
And the other one I remembered as well.

Which was a smart move. Showing up early always is.

But I hope you realize that you kind of made a fool out of yourself? Your insistence on assuming instead of communicating was actually really unprofessional.

The receptionist misled you.. that's about the only unfortunate thing that wasn't caused by your own actions.

Then you wasted the time he had set aside to interview you instead of doing actual work, because you had no respect for him or his business.

You need a job, yet act like your time is super valuable? What the heck man? If you really need a job that bad, wait or just politely ask the receptionist. I've never heard of someone leaving an interview because they had to wait past the time they assumed was the actual interview.

If anything the receptionist is the one who should have told you to wait or find out what was taking so long. If he was busy he can easily forget that he has someone waiting, secretaries/receptionists are supposed to remind and keep on these things. He likely forgot you were there waiting.

Also why leave? You got nothing else going on

I feel like people aren't reading this because it sums up the guy's attitude perfectly. The interviewee, Thacker, came in early, finished the paperwork promptly and was summarily ignored. I don't know what planet this dude lives on but I'm not interested in sharing it with him.

Thacker still fucked up for leaving without asking about anything, but I can't imagine working there would be all that wonderful.
