I think people have a natural reluctance to grab something for free that you are normally charged for. Hell, it's likely half of the stigma with free-to-play games with the other half being the pay-to-win model, though that can be argued as being tied into the suspicions over something being free. Way easier to swallow if something's just absurdly cheap.
