I hate Ubi games in general, I've tried numerous times and couldn't get into AC, FarCry etc. But I bit the bullet and bought Shadows to try as I just love the setting and I have to say, I'm about 3-4 hours in and actually quite enjoying it so far. Started off a little rough but it's getting better. There's definitely some slight jank and the facial animations are so god awful, like what the fuck awful, but otherwise, it's alright!

Definitely was never going to save the company. They needed something along the lines of Elden Ring or Monster Hunter Wilds to make up for the past several fops.

This does add value to the Assassin's Creed IP, however. Or at least, it doesn't lower it.

It's this. It just increases the sale price of Ubi to show the AC franchise still has value.

Stars are skewed since this is physical and MH is bigger on PC, as per the 1m concurrent on Steam Vs 60k for Ass Creed. Shadows is probably gonna need a couple of months to reach the 8m Wilds did in 3 days.

PS5 still has a very healthy physical base in the UK and I'm assuming Shadows did much better on console vs PC.

Valhalla was a PS5 launch game, I guess a very high percentage of PS5 buyers got the game because there was very little to choose from.

Physical sale is a sale after all, even if we take that 30% cut from 70usd(or rather 57 pounds since its uk, probably could avg over 60 points if we include special editions) thats still roughly 40pounds ubi is making in pure profit on each physical copy sold, vs for example only 15 pounds/month they make from their premium sub in uk, thats huge difference.
Game had huge budget/hundreds of devs worked on it(over 2h of end credits, not even joking, its there somewhere on twitter, whole credits vid ;p) so ofc any bit additional revenue made is good and most welcomed

I'm glad it's doing well. It's the best AC game, and it's not even close IMO (though I still prefer Black Flag narratively).

I hope the Black Flag remake takes a lot of cues from this game in terms of stealth.

For a little extra context, we know (from ERA annual report) that SW Outlaws sold 81k physical copies in the UK in 2024. It was available for the last four months of 2024, therefore we know Outlaws sold 81k physical copies in the UK in its first four months and obviously some amount less than that in its first three months.

This is an assumption on my part, but I would assume from his choosing to say 'three months' rather than 'four months' that Shadows surpassed the former but not the latter (81k).

I can't find physical only numbers for Valhalla to compare.

Digital share has increased in the 4 years since Valhalla. I'm thinking this launch will be lower then Valhalla overall but not by a huge amount. Legs could be better if WOM is better then Valhalla.

Valhalla sold around 151k copies physical and around 159k copies digital on launch week in the UK.

That was in November 2020 during Covid and PS5/Xbox series launch.

Well behind is Origins with 102k units physical and 57k digital.

Odyssey did 75k physical and 50k digital.

The previous entry, Mirage, did about 40k physical and 60k digital on launch week.

Is not known where Shadows landed, but it did around 10k+ on Amazon alone for the PS5 version.

Some people don't understand the point of AC: Shadows being a success or a failure. It's not about saving Ubisoft: even if it's a massive hit, Ubisoft is fucked anyway.

The point is to show that, despite the thousands of shitshows surrounding the game, the online discourse about the mediocrity of recent AC games, especially Valhalla, and Ubisoft's current reputation, Assassin's Creed remains a flagship franchise that alone is worth it. We'll see, but if the game actually manages to be a commercial success despite everything, it will give the Guillemot family a considerable advantage in negotiations for a possible acquisition or financial partnership

Yup. it's also weird because these were all things that I thought we established months before the release:

"It's Assassin's Creed, so it will never 'BOMB' entirely, but given Ubisoft's current situation on the market, anything that isn't a super-strong performance will be trouble for them in the long run. And even that may not assure safety".

But somehow thanks to some misguided sense of loyalty toward one side or the other of the "culture war" now we are seeing a bunch of notable ones making clowns of themselves trying to frame a specific scenario.
So, for example, every time that a retailer isn't self-combusting the moment the game is put on a shelves is somehow painted as a massive win.

I said that if you add up the millions they spend on DEI, Ubisoft could make a few AA games. AA games. You know the cheaper niche games that used to actually make some money that propped up these companies?
