Story was ok but the art style is absolute shit. No effort was made into the backgrounds whatsoever.
For me it was enough to scratch an itch

It's dead since the '90s. Apparently.Understandable since it's a dying genre.

Honesly, I think we're pretty lucky. We're still getting some pearls here and there. If it ever went mainstream it would have been dumbed down and ruined like so many other genres. Not to beat a dead horse but I know we've received a small number of classic p&c adventures each year constantly but not to a quality&quantity I'd prefer.

Anyone played Whispers of a Machine? I'm having great fun with it!
After some time passes I think Roki and Beautiful Desolation could possibly be considered classics in the genre.
Havent tried Roki but I did try BD and it did not click at all with me, and this is coming from someone who liked Stasis. I feel bad about the dev because it did not do as good as he/they may have hoped but I can srsly see why. Glad you had some good adventure games this year but I had none whatsoever. I've yet to play Tell me why but I'm scared its political bs nature will make me hate it. I enjoyed The Norwood Suite but that did not release this year, just got around to playing it now.
I loved Beautiful Desolation. It's got a fantastic setting that I wish it would be used more in the future.
Well Roki is definitely one to check out, I consider it must play for 2020. Provided a taste for that kind of fairy tale narrative. VirtuaVerse, is really good too, if you're looking for something traditional w/ legit 90s tier difficulty. I can see how someone could prefer the more traditional structure of STASIS, it moves at a brisker pace and has stronger puzzles too. For me, though, the amazing setting and thought provoking moral dilemmas of BD set it apart.
As far as Tell Me Why, it's DontNod so you can expect some degree of cringe. Mainly tied into a few scenes involving an optional romance sub plot. Easily the worst part of the game but outside of that (and a few dialogue choices where you can choose be an ass and lecture ppl) it's really not preachy or ideological. It's primarily a personal drama about finding out what happened to the twins' mother to push her over the edge and for 90% of the game they retain focus on that mystery.
I went into Tell Me Why expecting it to be a LiS 2 tier shit-show but it's not even close. There's occasional clunky moments where they dip their toe in those woke waters, but overall It's an enjoyable small stakes mystery story. Life is Strange is still my favorite DontNod adventure but TMW restored my faith in the company's ability to make a solid game.
Agreed. There's way too much great world building in BD for that setting to be a one and done.
VirtuaVerse looks nice but I'm looking at something budgety if that's even a word, with voice acting. Roki is on my list and Tell me Why as well but if you're saying it's better than LiS2 which u didn't like (I actually did despite the obvious political anti-trump/racism stuff) then I'll give it a go. October is a dry month anyway until the behemoth that will be November so I'll have time to get these two then.
unreleased game, The Last Night
Deal breaker for me. I can't stand them.As much as I'm enjoying it, I really, really despise coming across a sliding puzzle in an adventure game...
Vampire On Titus Yeah, the world looks really intriguing. I am tempted to play the demo again just to see what I missed the first time - definitely looking forward to the full release.
Btw, if anyone was interested in Darkside Detective, it's currently free with Amazon/Twitch. It had been on my radar for a while so I snapped it up.
I'm about halfway through. My impression of the game is really positive - lots of fourth wall breaking and wry humor in a classic Lucasarts/Monkey Island vein. However, the puzzles are very basic, and the game is short. The main game is six missions, and they take around 20/30 minutes to complete each. There are 3 extra bonus missions too.
It's a fun little game, and for free, it's a damn bargain.

I never even got around to playing 3 after seeing all of the negative reviews. I guess with the major discounts I should pick it up finally. Any of the initial negative aspects get fixed since the game came out? Think it’s been a couple years now.
Yeah it's less buggy and doesn't run like total ass anymore. They added Point & Click controls back in as well, if that's you're preference (cant speak for how good they are, though). There's still the significant issues of a fairly clunky interface, movement control, lip sync, voice acting, etc. Syberia 3 has a lot of problems but, as I've said before, I had a great time with it. The settings are as unique and fascinating as ever, Kate is a really good protagonist in it, the puzzles are fun and it's a pretty damn good looking game too.
If you think you'll be able to look past the jank, there's a lot of what made Syberia 1 & 2 great that's still present in 3. It's a hard game to recommend but if it was ever worth giving a shot, it'd be now while it's on sale.
New trailer and playable prologue/demo for Syberia: The World Before. Haven't gotten a chance to play it yet but it seems out girl, Kate, has been through some rough times. She's also sharing the protagonist role with another woman, Dana Roze as the story plays out between two distinct time periods.
Incantamentum looks right up my alley.
Too bad that
- Traditional point and click adventure game puzzles and interactions, with an easy modern interface.
Looking amazing
Oh yeah, but I'm tired of simplicistic "just click" interfaces. Recently played other two adventures that used it (gonna talk about them soon). Give me back SCUMM.It's basically just the Revolution Software/Wadjet Eye 2 click interface

Also, too damn many references, feels like they're mandatory for P&C games, enough already!
It's a huge immersion breaker for me. They pull you out of the game's world. P&C are plagued by this, there's no other genre that has this issue.Hard agree with this point. Especially in the retro comedy style games, they lean waaaay to heavily on the nostalgia bait references.
Is there anything new like Myst/Riven/Obduction? Absolutely love the atmosphere and puzzles in those games and I'm looking for something with the same quality all around. I wouldn't mind if it had the real life acting too, hehe.
I haven't played these myself but they're newer games in that vein and could be worth giving a look.
and of course there's Cyan's new game currently in development, Firmament. Whenever it actually comes out.
"There is no game: Wrong dimension" is a Point&Click comedy adventure (and Point&Click only!) that will take you on a journey you never asked to go on, through silly and unexpected video game universes.
Will you be able to play along with the "Game" to find your way home?
We sincerely think NOT.
- A Point&Click comedy adventure. You can go ahead and put your controller back up on the shelf.
- Incredible 3D graphics that are flat. Completely flat. And very pixelated.
- Almost fully voiced. (May contain traces of foreign accents here and there.)
- Solve riddles that require you to think "Outside the box".
- Hint system included because you can't think "Outside the box"...
- Shorter than an MMORPG, which leaves you plenty of time to finish some REAL good games.
- Discover the Top 10 best walls. The fourth one will surprise you!
- Motion sickness free, which is pretty remarkable for a non-VR experience.
- Contains tons of bugs... but it’s supposed to be like that.
- And lots of other surprises!

Stop reading about it and play it. Spoilers are exceptionally bad in this case. There Is No Game kinda flew under my radar but after skimming the 5 star review on Adventure Gamers (to avoid spoilers as much as possible) and seeing some other impressions, like the one Fuz wrote up, I'm really intrigued. Seems to be a very funny and unique comedy adventure.
Surprised at the overwhelmingly positive response to this one, definitely gonna have to check it out soon.
i wish blizzard would revive the Warcraft Adventures game. I would play that in a heartbeat.
I haven´t played it myself though
