AI generates fake Obama videos

In another example of crazy machine learning, researchers were able to train a software to generate fake Obama videos, saying stuff he never said (to be clear, all words were actually said by him at some point, in another context), by analyzing his facial movements when saying various words from existing video footage of him.

Computer scientists at the University of Washington previously revealed they could generate digital doppelgängers of anyone by analyzing images of them collected from the Internet, from celebrities such as Tom Hanks and Arnold Schwarzenegger to public figures such as George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Such work suggested it could one day be relatively easy to create such models of anybody, when there are untold numbers of digital photos of everyone on the Internet.
The researchers chose Obama for their latest work because there were hours of high-definition video of him available online in the public domain. The research team had a neural net analyze millions of frames of video to determine how elements of Obama's face moved as he talked, such as his lips and teeth and wrinkles around his mouth and chin.

Impressive to say the least. I look forward to the future where you won't be able to trust what was said in any video.

Edit: Here's an 8 minute video that goes in a bit more detail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Yq67CjDqvw
And the actual paper: http://grail.cs.washington.edu/projects/AudioToObama/siggraph17_obama.pdf

This technology has truly frightening political implications as it becomes more affordable. Sure Hollywood can sort of do that now, but as it becomes cheaper and easier to do, I really don't like where that could go in the wrong hands. Especially with today's political climate.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.

First thing I thought of. "Fake news" will really become fake news if you can just throw any script into an algorithm then spit out a convincing video.

One day porn on the internet will simply be one video, called The Porn, and it will star everyone on the planet doing every conceivable sex act, forever.

Just in time for a Trump video to come out! It'll reveal everything we ever wanted to know... and it will be fake news. GGs

I was excited to try it out but on second thought it’s a good thing this isn’t open to public (yet anyway)...

This seems insane.

On the plus side it should help a lot with videogames and CG.....

Wonder how a Disney engineer would think 40 years ago working on robotic Abe Lincoln seeing this, especially if they could really get it onto a robotic unit that can properly simulate lips/head movement/small things.

The programs that are used in the future to produce these animations will need to have a rock solid system of verification, say, like image processing programs are protected against money falsification, so that these technologies cannot be used to spread misinformation. Either watermarks, or protection against the use of faces of politicians and celebrities, or some kind of encrypted metadata in the files they produce, or simply a telltale sign that the image is artificial.

Somebody make an Obama video saying he hates gays and the poors and that climate change is a hoax perpetrated by the Chinese. If you put it on TV, maybe you can make Trump do the opposite of those things.

Watching the video, it's not as convincing when dealing with pauses. Also, the lack of body language or exaggerated facial expressions puts it into uncanny valley.

saying stuff he never said

You confused me. The article actually says:

The researchers were careful to not generate videos where they put words in Obama's mouth that he did not at some other time utter himself.

So I went in thinking that they were making new audio from clips of other audio. They're making video, for audio, based on clips of audio+video by analyzing the already-existing video that goes with the audio.

Anyway, it's cool but it was obviously off to me. FOR NOW.

Sorry, I'll edit the OP for clarity.

Just a hint of uncanny valley.

The telling thing for me was the eyes and eyebrows. The result video mainly has his eyes locked dead centre at the viewer, brows unshifting, so when Obama's voice dips because of things like looking down in the source, or he alters pitch in a way coupled with a widening of expression, the change to the audio doesn't quite match that lack of expression.

Damned impressive tech though.

This article alone will enable thousands of Infowars-swilling troglodytes to more easily reject literally everything that doesn't align to their bias

really hope this doesn't enter into wider private and public use anytime soon. we are not anywhere near enough civilized for this stuff yet.

After I saw a video in which a scientist explain how they combine different deep learning programs to achieve spectacular results, I knew this will eventually happen.

Content creation is going to be very cheap.

Two cannibals are eating a clown. One turns to the other and says "does something taste funny to you?"
So when will this translate to robots that will pretend to like me

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
The synthetic videos are strangely lifeless. Interesting technology though.
