I won't watch the video but there are several meanings "meaningless" can have.
Is it 100% objective? No, it can't be. Just like any other award show for any industry. There is no way whoever picks is exposed with sufficient time to every single game out there and even if they could do it, it's a subjective matter.
Even the Academy Awards suffer from this and the Emmys, Golden Globes and whatever entertainment awards in the world.
It does give the industry credibility in the sense that works as a marketing stunt to let the general public know that video games exist and that it's an industry big enough to justify an event like this. It's an entertainment show for marketing, not looking to validate anyone's tastes.
