Alien Covenant Trailer Released

I'm not claiming anything on the movie besides the trailer. I'm commenting on the trailer and the impression it leaves on me as a viewer. It is made to gauge interest in the full movie, and as a communication promotion cut, it leaves a bad impression.

I'm very open to that the film has more to it. But there is a trend in Hollywood with film trailers that spoil the entire film chronologically. What we see from the trailer is cuts from pre (landing)- character establishment of 5-10 characters, exploration on a uncharted world- Key plot moment when the face hugger jumps on a crew member, followed by lots of random cuts back on the vessel with actors running around screaming. Interim quick cuts of the entire ship being on fire, so based on this I think it's safe to say:

30-45 minutes of character building, and establishing the mission. character refusal, resisting the call to action, dilemmas. piquing questions and subplots as to what, how and why. Establishes that only jumping in and exploring can they find out the truth.

30-45 minutes in the second act of the acual exploration of land, as the crew struggles and the signature alien begins to creep in.

30 minute; in the last act it's just the crew trying to survive and the audience having to guess which one survives.

If you propose that there is a lot of different things to do it (I've not read the spoilers) that would make me happy, because the trailer seems like a run of the mill. It would make me happy if what we saw in the trailer is the earlier parts of the film. Like if they could through all of this in the first 30 minites, because we've seen all of this before. That would be a lot more interesting. What happens then?

Personally I thought the trailer was alright,
not the best trailer ever of course but its only a teaser anyway, showing a few snippets but the main focus of the trailer was showing the Alien is back.

The trailer doesn't represent everything of what this movie really is, if you haven't read the spoilers, I won't go into the details but there is more to it than this trailer suggests. There are loads of plot details and even some characters that aren't even shown in this trailer.

I'm looking forward to being surprised then!:))

How about this?

1) I know a bunch of people who write professionally. I trust their opinions.

2) It's Sunday morning and I got about 4 hours of sleep.

Offering up a word of warning to folks that the videos aren't all that doesn't seem like a problem to me. Pretension is unwarranted self-importance. There's no self-importance here. Just me sayin some folks I trust don't like the video you linked, and they're qualified, so that may be worth taking into consideration. I'm qualified too, but I didn't bring that up because we don't need to get into that. I'm not interested in derailing the thread for a lengthy dissertation on why that is, especially when I've had no coffee.

Simply put, his thesis is wrong.

1. It's called driveby shitposting when you dismiss a post on a post or link without attributing to discussion. And I read your post like that. There is nothing to discuss from that your "qualified" friends don't like something. You offer no real rebuttal. It's a waste of time and annoying as shit. Consider if what your post has any value to others.

2. It certainly rings as pretentious. You'd not need to mention that your friends are screenwriters. You did it to give weight to the idea that their opinions have weight and the rest of us shouldn't really take to heart anything that your screenwriting friends in particularly like. Why are you qualified? why are your friends qualified? You can be as qualified as you want to be, doesn't mean that any poster or youtuber or whatever, has a opinion that is less valid. If you have legit arguments and you actually want to bring forth any arguments of substance to which we might learn from your qualification; then let's hear it.
You have massive levels of self importance if you need to tout your own horn as well as your friends to give credibility to yourself. How is that not pretentious? Fucking seriously mate.

I don't take issue with your opinion but the pretentious driveby shit you're running. It's incredible annoying and comes off as smug bullshit. It is a discussion board and illuminating discussion can not be had if the majority of posters round up all their opinions by doubledowning on what their moms dentist thought about whatever. It's so incredible uninteresting and a cheap way to carry your point across.
EDIT: I don't want to come off on a negative note. I doubt it was your intent to seriously annoy. I'm just coming to you as someone who has really enjoyed nerdwriters video. I find a lot of them to be informative. So I'd just like to know why the nerdwriter is full of shit. And I'd like to know what I am ignorant about if I am to eat crow for enjoying the videos. If you can convince me that his video are full of misinformation and shit I will stop posting links to his channel. He has come up a lot in movie threads here on GAF. Both hm and Tony from how to frame a painting!

Yea it's a bummer for me... doesn't seem nearly as deep or lore expanding/thought provoking or have as much of an alien sense of exploration that Promethues attempted.

As I suspected, film has an identity crisis.
People who want another Alien may really like it though

As someone who wants another good Alien movie, I'm not sure how much of an Alien movie this even is. Supposedly it's not the Xenomorphs as we know them, but some variation again
like at the end of Prometheus.

The Xeno had a well established lifecycle, background, and everything we needed to know about it was clear; and constantly fudging with it to deliver some backstory that no one asked for and answering questions nobody's had (like an Engineer ejaculating into the primordial soup to make life or whatever) is pretty disappointing when the main man himself returns to the franchise.

Where is Prometheus 2?

This is it according to Scott himself.

Simply put, that's not good enough.

Facetiousness aside, if you're going to claim that Evan Puschak is wrong, put up or shut up. This kind of appealing to the authority of vague "professionals" without formulating even the semblance of an argument is just dodging the issue. You're tired? Then get some sleep and take whatever time you need, we'll still be here. And no dissertations are required.

Agreed on your opinion re "Prometheus" and other sci-fi though. Some things are best left unexplained.

Weyland Yuntani at it again. Quite frankly, I'm okay with Promethlian as the story continues on with David which was by far the most interesting part of Prometheus by a country mile.

Where I will take issue is if it has the pacing and intelligence (or lack there of) of Prometheus which took the audience for a bunch of morons. Hopefully Mr. Scott has learned his lesson.

Day 0.

Trailer looked, beautiful/sterile and... boring.

RE: Ridley Scott

Thought this was the gonna be a trailer for the alien with sigorney.

Also...James Franco shows up in the most randomest roles.

The alien is Jason now. Murdering people during sex scenes 😂

While the Xeno's will be a little different,
there are a few different types in the movie,
they are a lot closer to the classic Xeno we all know, non of that weird hybrid thing from Prometheus.

There is also a good chance the full on classic Xeno will have been created by the end of the movie too.

Every screenwriter I know thinks these videos are full of shit.

Care to explain why?

As another user stated you are basically doing the equivalent of a drive-by shitpost, stating "I know people in the industry and they hate these videos." Your attempt is obvious at giving weight to your opinion by adding "industry experts" you know, either tell us why they are crap or don't try to add weight to a meaningless post.

All that said, after watching a number of nerdwriter1's videos I would say that I'm not really a fan nor find his videos particularly insightful. Basically, he often brings up a subject or a topic of critique without actually exploring it. Just look at the two videos quoted earlier on, "intertexuality" and "Epidemic of Passable Movies." He explains, for example, what intertexuality is with some examples in films but fails to exactly analyze what makes for a bad use of intertexuality and what is a good use of the technique. The same thing occurs in his comment of the recent "epidemic" of passable movies, he essentially states, "there are a lot of passable movies of late such as [insert recent blockbuster]." But, he never goes in-depth as to why those movies were passable, what caused them to be average, and how they could be improved beyond, "just be better."

Now, all that which I just typed is how you discuss your problems with nerdwriter1's videos; not going, "I have industry experts that hate his stuff." See the difference?

Where is Prometheus 2?

From IMDB:

The crew of the colony ship Covenant discover what they think is an uncharted paradise, but it is actually a dark, dangerous world, whose sole inhabitant is the synthetic David, survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

I guess it IS the sequel.

Yikes.

Why's everyone so bent out of shape by the shower scene? I've seen plenty moan about it but no one has said why.

Because it came off as a tryhard, uncreative version of the Prometheus "birth" scene, badly lit and bad camera angle.

The whole trailer really feel like a bad rip off of the first Alien movie. There is no FX budget either. So like a Germany/Spain remake of Alien with 50 million budget.

Because it takes the xenomorph = penis metaphor to the most childish extreme, that's why. Going by the leaks, impressions and trailer the movie seems like like an Alien Resurrection-level slasher with the remnants of the shitcanned Prometheus 2 draped over it.

The leaked spoilers are just so dumb, you could only come up with such drivel out of spite.

Considering the state David is in at the end of Prometheus this story seems dumber than I'm willing to accept from the jump. At least my expectations will be set appropriately going in, unlike last time.

Have you seen Giger's body of work? It's one giant penis-vagina metaphor taken to extremes.

Here's one of the pieces that inspired the original xenomorph design:

Alien with giant penis head stroking its giant penis.

So this is the full link between Prometheus and Alien. I'm interested to see how this goes.

It's cool seeing Danny McBride in a serious role.

Why's everyone so bent out of shape by the shower scene? I've seen plenty moan about it but no one has said why.

It didn't really add much to the rest of the trailer. Seemed like a remnant of the slasher trope.

Not seeing much new that hasn't been shown in the other movies, I hope the movie will have some surprises at least or will have good story telling even if the story is not that original at this point

Yeah i was thinking there are two Davids as he's a robot but if the David from the trailer is not from their crew but the David from Prometheus...

I guess he could have repaired himself over a few decades (and build a piano etc) or whatever year this movie is in.

Well that's my point, it was already so overt in the original film, this is just puerile. Giger's artwork often went to extremes that wouldn't look right on film. Having an Alien interrupt a sex scene so it can slash at people's genitals with it's tail...we get it. The alien is an amoral penis on legs. We got it in 1979.

I'm assuming Noomi Rapace repaired him before she was likely killed by a facehugger or something. The cast list says she's in the movie.

The Alien has a penis for a head, and vaginas on its back. To kill you, it penetrates you with its penile looking mouth.

The Facehugger is a vagina with legs that gets wet, moist and opens up when its ready to go.

To procreate the Facehugger forces a tendril down your throat that pumps and thrusts until it's planted a baby Alien inside you.

Oh yeah, and that baby looks like a penis.

There really is no taking that metaphor further. It's already as extreme and on the nose as you can get with a penis monster metaphor. Recreating a kill scene from the first movie with two people in a shower doesn't really change that.

Is the idea that Fassbender is playing a different android, just of the same model as David, on the Covenant? Like Ash in Alien vs. Bishop in Aliens?

So does this mean we're never going to get that movie about a girl and her pet android head exploring the galaxy together? god dammit

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who enjoyed Prometheus quite a bit.
I enjoyed it too. For all its flaws, it's goddamn pretty, and I love the story concepts (not so much the execution).

I don't think it's a good movie, but I don't regret watching it.

Can't wait for this. I just want some terror again. Trailer seems to deliver that.

David was the only interesting part of Prometheus. Glad they kept him.

Was nervous about the shower scene but the mood/lighting seems great.

My goodness the hate in this thread...Did you all get coal for Christmas? The cast seems more genuine already, and I believe that crudup and co will be more believable, which is really what took me so far out on Prometheus. I know I'll enjoy this at least to some degree, so I'm looking forward to it. I'll hope for expectations to be exceeded!

I can only imagine how much it must suck to be a director making another of your signature films, in your signature style, only to have the internet label it as boring, derivative, and cliched... but only because everyone has been ripping off your classic for the last 35 god damn years.

It looked like a Ridley Scott Alien movie. I don't know what you were expecting.

All hope was lost after people lerned of the leaks that are confirmed by this trailer
