Alien: Isolation |OT| 1 Alien. 1 Ripley. No Jonesy.

Are you not using the motion tracker? The game gives you all the feedback you need to make good choices. If there is nothing beeping or on the screen feel free to move around, and then crawl if you notice it beginning to beep. Always watch airshafts, though... if there is slime pouring out of them, wait or find another path. Also, use your tools to distract. There have only been a few times so far that I have had to hide in a locker, etc., for a few minutes until the threat passes, or have had to run out of the room. In 7, I think, there are long bits where you are only on the look out for humans and Joes, and they talk, so it is easy to hear if you are spotted.

Always progess and check the motion tracker compulsively. Beeping? Hide. Not? Move cautiously and listen for voices and noises.

I am using the motion tracker. I'm more talking about when I'm hiding behind a crate and someone can walk right by and not notice me, and yet they can see all the way down the hall and spot me behind a crate. That stuff I have no feedback on whether or not I'll be noticed. The tracker is great, and helpful, but the line-of-sight stuff seems broken to me many times. Also, does darkness, shadows, and light not factor into them being able to spot you? At the end of mission 6, the android walked right by me while I crouched in a brightly lit spot, but the humans down the hall spot me behind a crate in the darkness.

Also, is there suppose to be 2 or more aliens running around? I had one instance where two adjacent vents were dripping, so I was confused on whether or not there were more than 1 alien, unless it was a glitch or something.

Attempted to play it again today for the first time since October. Stopped after like 20 minutes. This game just gives me too much stress and anxiety. I even bumped it down to Novice but the fear is still there.

I'll probably never be able to finish this. Great game, though.

Not to my knowledge. And I guess I misunderstood your post, sorry. And I don't have a good answer for the LOS stuff. I just chalk it up to humans being more fearful, so they are jumpy (that doesn't explain when they are right next too you, though), while Joes just run their routines. Sometimes the human LOS stuff is a bit funky...

The fear/stress is the best part, Elite!

I haven't noticed this randomness that you seem to be observing. If I'm spotting it's because someone had a clear line of sight to me.

regarding your last question, no. spoilers: (seriously, no one read this unless you want some great shit spoiled)
except during later portions of the game when it turns out that she has made a nest and is multiplying. there are segments with multiple aliens at that point. and boy is it fuckin' stressful. XD

as far as your original question, do things change after chapter 7 -- the answer is yes.
you get a flamethrower which you can use to repel the alien. it actually makes the alien quite a bit easier to manage from that point on -- for as long as you have it + have ammo for it.

Loved the game! Needed forever to finish it on Normal but I also got all the collectables and killed no humans :)

Best parts are when you alerted the alien of your presence and it goes into that high alert mode in which anything really can trigger your discovery.
Makes for some surprising moments, for example, this only happened once to me:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xe_IgYlghqI
I guess in that mode it can even hear the vents opening?

The normal mode AI is quite simple to control, especially when you crouch walk (and don't make noise, that includes NPCs being nearby) as then the alien will pretty much stay in the vents for most parts of the game.

Too many hostile NPCs though, doesn't really make that much sense. But luckily the no-killing trophy does not forbid to lure the alien to them :> Although I learned later that I did that also to the friendly NPCs as I didn't bother to try first if they gonna shoot at me, whoops!

Ending felt a bit weak though. Also, mid/end-game it seemed to me they ran out of resources to make more cutscenes. Using the shuttle felt kinda weird with no scene showing your travel etc. Little animations of the trams would also have been nice.

in my entire time with the game I never had this happen. I also never had the alien show up in vents, though I heard it's possible.

also never got impaled from the back. I just nevered bothered trying to run from him and I don't run in general if the alien is out and about.

This game dethroned Metroid Prime as my favorite game of all time.

I think it happened around the
Marlowe bits
. That aspect was a great surprise.

Happened to me a bunch of times. Maybe it's only on Hard difficulty.

people are making me want to do a hard run. I must be a masochist, because even on normal the game really broke my balls towards the end.

Mission 10 is the worst. Please tell me that it's the worst, and that the game gets significantly better after it. :(

I don't remember what mission 10 is specifically, but I have a rough idea what point of the game it is. the game definitely changes a bit.
once you have the flamethrower, the game is different. that said, the game does continue to do some new things and throw a few surprises your way, so it's worth sticking it out even if it does drag a bit in spots.

Ok, i have a few chapters left but i can already say that this is one of the best games ever made. I haven't felt like this about a game since i dunno.. the original Condemned maybe. Such an immersive experience and i just can't put the controller down. GOTY for sure.

Huh? This game drags? The pacing is great and just when you think "is this it?" the game throws a new mechanic/weapon/story bit at you that shakes it up. I am really pleased with the game. CA did themselves proud.

So survivor mode is an absolute bastard. Just trying to do the included Basement map with all the optional objectives and after a couple of hours trying I finally saw the exit, mad dashed for it and the fucker is waiting in a overhead vent just in front of the door!!!!

Didn't think I would be keen on this mode but playing it like the main game, but with a time limit that adds even more tension to an already tense game and I bloody love it!

I picked up the season pass cheap during the Steam sale, and coupled with the new difficulty mode I intend to get some mileage out this game.

Not just GOTY to me but probably one of the best games I have ever played period.

It wasn't too bad. The only time I really got stuck was when I didn't know that having low health meant you couldn't hold your breath properly; the alien kept killing me when I'd hide in a locker. Once I figured that out, no real problems the rest of the way.

Irritating side note to that story: I switched the difficulty to Easy at that point, got killed by the alien, and promptly switched it back. It was just an experiment while I worked out what was going on, and I made no progress. But the game didn't give me the trophy for beating Hard mode when I won. I don't care much for trophies, but it still makes me mad when I earn one and don't get it.

I loved how the game
makes you think that it's winding down, when what it is really doing is giving you an extended break from the Alien just so it can ramp right up to 10 for the last couple of chapters of the game.

The pacing of the game is perfect, there's not a single section I would consider filler. This is quite an achievement in a 20+ hour game

Ok, I've been thinking about the sequel, because it has to come. As much as I love the cat and mouse style (I would still buy another one like this) I think the game needs to go the way via the movie as it went from space horror (Alien) to space action (Alien).

Now, hear me out. I don't want the aliens, as they're would have to be more than one, to be pushovers. This would not be a shooting gallery. They should still be just as dangerous, maybe even more so because you have the ability to kill them. Say if they crept up on you or got too close (with 2-3 m) it would be game over. Just throwing stuff out here. Point is, it will not be easy to take them out and there may be times where you would choose stealth if possible.

It was such a bloody tease having things like pipebombs and shotguns and not being able to kill it. If CA can do what they've done, I think they can go to the next level. The original game, like the movie, in my opinion is already legendary. Nothing can take that away. Making another game like what we have, I'm not sure how much I'd like that as opposed to the alternatives of trying something different.

To quote myself from earlier in the thread:

This will probably not be a popular opinion but I'd like to see their take on Aliens.

I wouldn't have it be a full-on FPS but maybe keep it 50% horror and 50% gunplay. I'd like it balanced in such a way that 1 Alien is a challenge to kill but 2-3 will require you to hide etc.

Aliens is my favourite film of all time and I have waited a long time for a game to do it justice. The most painful thing about the Colonial Marines disaster, is that the very game I thought would end my long wait ended up ensuring that my Aliens game is further away than ever.

Funny Mission 10 is one of my favourites. What didn't you like? Maybe the game really just isn't for you.

I'm starting to think the game just isn't for me too.

Mission 10 sucked for me. It took a long time just to get to the server room, and then I saved, luckily and finally. But getting through the server room with the androids and the alien was a pain. After a few times, I finally did it, but then the scripting got a bit screwed up, because I logged onto the terminal, turned on or off the system as instructed, but nothing happened for about 10 seconds.... literally nothing. Then the alien dropped into the room, I hid behind a chair, and then the scripting finally kicked in, but with the alien in the room, I couldn't do anything except wait, and wait, and then the alien finally saw me behind the chair. Eventually I got past this point, but then through the rest of the mission, which took more than an hour to finish, every save station I encountered told me hostiles were nearby, no matter how long I waited for the alien to leave me alone, it never left me more than .5 or .6 on the motion tracker. So I had two choices, save and potentially screw things up, or keep on trucking. So I kept on trucking, got to the end of the level depleting most of my flamethrower fuel (I have less than 100 now, and I'm worried I'm going to bone myself in future levels now since I have only once come into contact with ammo), but then when the airlock at the very very end of the level is pressurizing, the game crapped out on me again. The alien was charging at me, and I got into the pressurized room, but then the game decided that I died because I was stabbed while the alien was outside and the doors were closing. So, progress lost, an hour and a half lost, and it took a little over an hour to do it again, and this time it worked.

I'm kind of surprised by how long mission 10 was. It's been by far and away the longest of any of the missions. And it's been by far the most frustrating with the alien. I hid behind a pillar that the alien never walked around that was next to a save station, and I literally sat the controller down for about 20 minutes, just watching the alien get into the vent, go to the other side, come down, get back in the vent, and repeat and repeat. He never got more than .4 away from me, which made it impossible for me to save.

But, the alien is gone... for now, or whatever. I know it'll be back. Are the rest of the missions as long as 10? Am I approaching the endgame?

Imo that was the hardest part of the game, but I didn't have the trouble you did. You didn't mention using any equipment in your post, are you using the items/materials you are collecting? You should never just wait for the Alien to leave (particularly in the sections where he is permanently stalking you), make it happen yourself with a noisemaker/flare or throw a smoke bomb so he cant see you while you access a terminal. You are given tonnes of materials throughout the game, don't be shy about using them.

plz no dead space 3. ;)

I think there's a large amount of middleground between a potential Aliens-style sequel and the cheap Gears of War/Uncharted clone that DS3 was.

Damn this game is intense. I'm only a few hours into it (just got the motion tracker) and the bit where you have to get past the alien to enter the elevator (and the several minutes leading up to that part) is terrifying.

So good, though.

You actually don't need to crouch all the time, you make the same amount of noise walking as you do crouching. I would recommend you try to break that habit as it will help you out later on (I had to do the same thing)

Walking as in fully tilting the stick?
I swear the alien came out of the vents more often when I was walking.

Yea, as in not holding the run button, it makes absolutely no difference to your sound guaranteed. Obviously your more visible, once your out of his line of sight feel free to walk at full speed. It's essential later on

I love the game for the atmosphere and the graphics and the feeling you are there but...it really is the ultimate "push a button" simulator. The amount of "power on" missions is pretty much insane. So many buttons!

Anyway, one technical nitpick: There are some corridors which have little step-ups inbetween. When you are going over it, the animation system handles it like going something up and down again which leads to a stuttering like effect, although there is no stutter. This step-ups are small enough that you should just go over them. But that's really minor, just noticed it.

Yeah, I have noticed those, too. Little hiccups when moving between areas, turning, etc. A little annoying, but I don't get too upset by them (not saying you do).

uhm yes, it will come more often if you walk.

It happened to me. I crouched the entire game.

I think if you have the option, PC is the best (obviously), but I am playing the PS4 version and all is well (besides for the little hiccups described above).

Gonna weigh in here: You do make less noise while crouching-- you are not completely silent...the squeak of sneakers, etc.-- but I can hear footfalls when I walk that I don't hear in crouch.

Thanks. Unfortunately PC is $49.99 and the PS4 version is $34 or $37 so I think I'm gonna go PS4.

No. I'm not talking about hicups like in stutter. The game is 100% fine and 60FPS stable at 3k. It's perfect. These hicups are in the enviroment because there are these little steps on the floor which are animated like Ripley is moving over a stair and that results in a stutter effect, she's going up and instantly going down again.

Doing my playthrough on hard and I am mostly liking it so far, but I do agree with a lot of the complaints about it getting really frustrating and at times unfair.

What I don't like:
1. The balance between checkpoints in mission 5 and 6 was pretty damn ridiculous. While in one of the later missions there was one like every two minutes.

2. Sometimes the stealth sections can be too ridiculous in that you have to do things in no time that take time. For example there is one section where you have an android patrol and you have to blowtorch open a door, while he is looking away. On hard those androids are virtually impossible to kill.

3. The finicky nature of the action (X) button can be EXTREMELY annoying.

Now that I have just gotten the flamethrower is it say to say that the hardest part of the game is over?

I was trying to do collectibles on my hard run, but I am just going to get them via mop up and drop the difficulty down. The Alien AI being wayyy too unpredictable makes it not worth straying from the main path.

To add to this, the space station and level design is honestly your biggest enemy in the game. Far too often you have absolutely no clue where to go and you will find stupid obstacles that you can't go past, but some real person could easily jump over. Yes, the map does display where the objective is located, but most of the time you have no clue how to make your way to that portion of the map. Too often you will think you're going the right direction only to be lead to an unpassable wall and/or obstacle and have to wander aimlessly and hope that the path you take is the correct one. All while androids and the alien is wandering around. The game completely loses tension and combined with the save stations it becomes a frustrating annoyance. I am at the point where I just look at online guides to show me the way.

I am currently on chapter 11, where you get a break from the Alien. I can completely agree with a lot of the complaints about the game and a lot of the praise.

I do feel for the most part that they got the Alien right by making it unpredictable. You will die a lot, but for the most part it does play fair.

Tip for anyone playing the game on hard:
If you're having to repeat a section over and over, sometimes the best thing to do is to say "fuck it" and just stay crouched and head to the objective with the alien close by. Sometimes you will get lucky and not be seen.

What sucks is that there is really not much that can be done for the sequel that will balance the frustrations.

The only thing that can be fixed is to make it much more obvious where to go such that you don't end up heading into a wall and having to back track with the alien hunting your ass down.

Maybe adding checkpoints would be ok.

You could always just hold up the motion detector - it tells you exactly which direction to go. It doesn't even tell you the general direction - it tells you the exact door to go through and when to take a left or right turn. I stopped using it because it made the game too easy.

Also, there are checkpoints in certain areas, usually if you go through an elevator or something.

I am well aware that the game has checkpoints, but many of them are spaced out too far.

Maybe it's because I try to explore everything anyway, but even w/o the motion detector I was rarely confused where the game wants me to go next.

The game was pretty awesome in the sense that it triggered my urge to explore each room for items etc. while at the same time making me regret doing it (scary+manual saving = the more I gather/explore the more I can lose). It was a fine balance haha

Regarding the save stations, there are definitely a few missions/areas that could use a few more. Mission 10
(the one in which you try to trap the Alien and you get trapped yourself in the server room)
in particular had a long passage in a new area with only one save station before the last room. You have the flamethrower at point though,

Mission 10-14 spoilers, I think?

Really loved the post alien chapters with the androids. Probably my favorite section since the first few hours...

HOWEVER....

Mission 14, later level spoilers:

I've discovered the underground lair, and I can't activate the two whatever because the motion detector is now useless since it is picking up so many things that move irrationally, and the multiple aliens, and the face huggers, and so on. I can get one activated, but that sets the alien free, and then I can't get to the second one, activate it, and live. Also, I set him on fire, have him disappear only to reappear in front of me and kill me. I have one noisemaker at my disposal, but I don't know where to throw it because it is corridors and when I did throw it, the alien just walked in the open to it, which meant she saw me and killed me. I assume all I have to do is activate the Alpha, then the Beta, the run to the elevator, but this 5 minute sequence is killing me. If it's not the alien killing me, it's a face hugger who gets me after I dispose of the alien...

Any tips for getting past this part? Can I thrown a molotov behind me in a corridor, and will that act as a barrier to prevent the alien from following me? Maybe that way I can focus on what's in front of me.

What I did was
save before activating Beta (I'm assuming you have powered it up), then move to the keyboard and turn it on. The alien will drop down. Hide until it goes away (you hear the sound of it going into the vents). Go out, activate one lever, return to the keyboard, wait the alien out again. Activate the other lever, then save. Then you can just concentrate on getting out. You shouldn't have a problem with an alien following you but you'll have to take care of facehuggers in your path and aliens that are ahead of you.
