DUBAI (Reuters) - Arab satellite television Al Jazeera said on Friday it would broadcast a video tape from al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden addressing the American people.

It said the tape, to be aired at 4 p.m. EDT, would discuss the reasons behind the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States and their repercussions. It gave no further details.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
Unless he's holding a current newspaper beside him, I'll have no reason to believe it's a "new" video. They could have just made a dozen videos three years ago with the intention of releasing them over a period of four or five years if Osama get bomba.

Videotape? Get with the times Osama. Your a multi millionaire and you can't afford to record this shit digitally? Don't they have DVD-R in the caves of Tora Bora?

I wonder if the is a bootleg version out there already

Osama will probably release the directors cut in 6 months time with 15 mins of previously-never-before-seen footage and a Koran 101 featurette.

CNN is currently translating the tape. Some choice pieces I've picked out so far are

(something about travelling to the region and US leaders learning about) falsifying evicende and harming liberties

...

bush more interested in listening to child story about goat (on 9/11) and gave us more time to execute the attacks.

...

Your security is not in the hand of Bush or Kerry or Al Qaeda, it is in yoru hands. if you don't mess with us you ensure your own security...

All paraphrases.

i thought al jazeera was shut down

Al Jazeera's feed was blocked from reaching a few countries, but they're far from shut down.

If you haven't already, you should check out Control Room, a documentary concerning Al Jazeera. I saw it the same weekend that Fahrenheit 9/11 was released in theaters, so I'm not sure if it's still playing or on DVD yet.

CNN is also talking about how he is moving around a lot more than he has in the past, and his message is a LOT more direct than he has EVER been before, there is no colorful language and no religious undertones.

Actually, he criticized Bush as being akin to an Arab monarch who takes away the freedoms of his own people. Which frankly shocked the hell out of me that Bin Laden would be talking about freedoms.

Aside from the one line which said neither Kerry or Bush can protect you, it sounded amazingly like a Kerry campaign speech. Just more militant.

It's a pretty weird message, actually. Almost like he has been watching everything going on in the US and saying "ok, here's how we see it." Really strange. I don't entirely know what to make of it.

K, sorry about the confusion. MSNBC.com just has "Bush cannot protect you." Is there a full transcript?

Not yet. People are still translating and retranslating/verifying as it comes down the pipe.

If you needed anymore proof that Bin Laden is a dumbass, well there you have it. When has attacking a country EVER pacified that country? Especially one as powerful as Amercia.

Double dumb ass on you? If his attacking us won't pacify, why would us attacking Al Qaeda pacify them?

We pacified Germany and Japan pretty well, I think.

I'm waiting for him to speak about Halliburton. But taking his points at face value, I have never heard him offer a "truce" like this and basically saying to Americans, only you can save yourself. the you don't attack, we won't deal is very out of character.

You know, bin laden and his group are the most hardcore of the fundamentals-- they hate the west (and non-Muslim world) in general and think that foreign values are invading Islamic culture. There's more to it then troops in Saudi Arabia and the Israel/Palestine issue.

Now he's saying he won't attack if Americans change their policy? Either he's a complete idiot or he's actually scared for his life and somehow thinks that whatever 'deal' is reached means he can sleep at night...

[edit]

And about Israel, doesn't he want to ERASE IT COMPLETELY off the map? No matter what policy the U.S. follows that just will not happen....

Yeah, you have a point but what else can you do with people like him? Attacking America like he did was just stupid... He has less power now than he did before... is that what he really wanted?

I don't pretend to know his motives though, maybe he has some grand 10 year plan or something

The "don't attack us" and "change policy" to stave off future attacks against US sounds like a rather large Kerry endorsement.

Whether or or not that's a good or bad thing ... who knows?

Dollars to doughnuts he'll still attack us even if Kerry is elected. I'd be *really* suprised if he didn't.

man, they've been sitting on the same gig for years now. 9/11, 9/11, 9/11. Somehow I expect them to still be warning us "remember september 11th?" 15 years from now with videos of an unaged Bin Laden playing on FX station

If Osama hits america again it'll look really bad for Bush. 3 years after the fact and no capture or kill.

Bin Laden suggested Bush was slow to react to the Sept. 11 attacks, giving the hijackers more time than they expected. At the time of the attacks, the president was listening to schoolchildren in Florida reading a book.

"It never occurred to us that the commander-in-chief of the American armed forces would leave 50,000 of his citizens in the two towers to face these horrors alone," he said, referring to the number of people who worked at the World Trade Center.

"It appeared to him (Bush) that a little girl's talk about her goat and its butting was more important than the planes and their butting of the skyscrapers. That gave us three times the required time to carry out the operations, thank God," he said.

In planning the attacks, bin Laden said he told Mohammed Atta, one of the hijackers, that the strikes had to be carried out "within 20 minutes before Bush and his administration noticed."

Bin Laden also said the Bush administration was like repressive Arab regimes "in that half of them are ruled by the military and the other half are ruled by the sons of kings and presidents."

The image of bin Laden reading a statement was dramatically different from the few other videos of the al-Qaida leader that have emerged since the Sept. 11 attacks.

it almost sounds like he is saying that Bush knew of the attacks (that bit of intelligence that was ignored, maybe) and that he just didn't care. It also seems like bin Laden wants Kerry to win and is laying it on Bush thick.

BBC has the videotape on their website along with a full news report:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/default.stm

"You will not be safe no matter who is in the White House" although he definitely sides towards the 'liberals' in this video... I'm sure this is just what Kerry wants to hear.

Right... For what its worth, he also said America's security is in the people's hands, not Kerry or Bush. Alot of the things he said echoed what Democrats and other around the world have been saying (surely to be used by neocons -' Your supporting what OBL said.. traitor!) and are true. Heck, if he wasnt a vain, ignorant, homicidal maniac, I would have voted for him as president if he was running :p ... those same criteria is also what would prevent me from voting for Bush coincidently.

it's crap that he's still alive, and his "thank god" bullshit only exasperates anger, but the lack of religious diatribe and addressing the American people himself - he's trying to exert whatever influence he can obviously. There are many forces in the media trying to influence elections these days - I never thought this terrorist would still be alive to be one of them to be honest... although I was sure alQueda would be in the news again.

People will vote after taking into consideration everthing they've come into contact with, and how their personality colours it all. So it's not that worrying. More worrying is whether people get out and vote at all.

Does Aljazerra (however it's spelled) sound like a fake slang-ized word to anyone else? It's as if Bill O'Reilly was on Fizox News.

It's as if he's talking smack. "You didn't see that one coming, boy! We owned you so hard you went running back to your picture book."
