Moon Knight #1: A decent start for Lemire's take on the character, albeit one that shoots itself in the foot by going back to the "Marc Spector has D.I.D. even though that's not how D.I.D. works and why is it that only Warren Ellis got this right". The main issue is how the people in charge of this ward are portrayed as cartoonishly evil like they saw Nurse Ratched from "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" and thought "we should do that, but even more evil!", which may stem from how rushed everything feels for a first issue. There's a lot of setup like a supporting cast for Spector within this ward, the main conflict of escaping
in order to stop Seth...maybe
,and the intrigue to be found in whether or not
this person really is Moon Knight or just some mentally handicapped fellow who's just a big fan since they were twelve years old, as well as how he got here if this really is Marc Spector and why Khonshu told him he needs to suffer
. On the positive side, Smallwood's artwork is gorgeous, especially when it's used to show parts of the character's past and his interactions with Khonshu, which aids the aforementioned intrigue with what we see and what the main character sees, namely as to which part is real and which part is fake. All in all, not a bad start, though i'd recommend checking out Warren Ellis' run over this for those who want to get into the character.

I feel like MK is a character where either the writer nails him, or ruins him and there's no in between. I'll give this a chance, but it'll be very hard to reach the heights of Warren Ellis' run.

FWIW, I recently went through a fair amount of the Doug Moench (aka. the guy who created the character) Moon Knight series comics and I found that they just don't hold up. Story-wise, at least, Bill's pencils look great, but the multiple personalities of Marc Spector and his struggle to balance them is just sloppily handled. Not to say there aren't any good stories, Moon Knight #14 was a solid done-in-one (whose villain technically makes an appearance later on in the series though she's played more sympathetically here, which works to its advantage) but the majority of the time, the stories suffer from cramming in way too much dialogue per panel, repetitive dialogue and the artwork for issues not drawn by B.S. are pretty lackluster, some of them being particularly hard to follow because of said artwork. Even from the start, the character had their share of struggles with writers not capitalizing on, so take this all with a grain of salt since most of the reviews i've read have praised the 2016 issue as a solid debut for the character.

I can't, and I was reading most of the xbooks up through secret wars.

I'm guessing this is another area where crucial shit happened in the 8 month gap.

Damn. I like where it's going, but I've no idea what preceded it to this point.

I keep forgetting Karnak exists, then a new issue comes out, is amazing and I get sad knowing it will be another 15 years before the next one.

I'm confused: Isn't Kraven supposed to be...dead? Or was this one of the changes that happened in the 8-month gap that has yet to be explained?

Nah I think he came back a long time ago. He was in the first issue of the first volume of Squirrel Girl last year, and then popped up again for this 2 parter.

Ok. Well, there goes my "maybe it's not Uncle Ben coming back in 'Dead No More, maybe it's ___!" pick.

I finally finished Secret Wars, and I am ready for ANAD.

Want to read Ironman and Dr. Strange, but I have heard mixed things about these two.

Also what are the current wherebouts of Nightcrawler?

You should check out Grim Hunt, which is the best Spider-Man story in years, then check out the best Marvel ongoing ever, Scarlet Spider, written by the sage of the human condition, Based Lord and Savior Chris Yost, for the most compelling answer to this question.

This praise is only a slightly hyperbolic.

I tried to block that out.

It's really stupid how all of that stuff went absolutely nowhere. Bendis just gave up about halfway through. What happened to Storm's daughter from the future who stayed in present day? The evil Mystique/Xavier son? The evil Mystique/Wolverine son? Is evil Jean Grey/Xorn even still alive? And did they ever explain why the young X-Men could never return to their time? What a dumpster fire. Just "erase" all of them except for Jean since that's really the only reason that entire plot happened was to bring Jean back into continuity.

I was going to reference evil Not-Xavier, but Wikipedia said that was his grandson, so I gave up. Strong genetics, I guess.

If I recall....

He originally stated he was Xavier's grandson-but then later it was revealed he was Xavier's son and Raze's brother.

I think part of has to do with Marvel completely re-staffing their X-Men office and them focusing on the post-SW storyline. That other stuff was set up by Aaron and Bendis with the current writers seemingly wanting nothing to due with the stuff those two were writing.

To be fair, they look alike because they are bald and the baldness was a side effect of Xavier's mutation.

Remember when Uncanny #600 was going to tie everything up and prepare the future ? LOL

AFAIK, Kraven came back during the arc that concluded that long ass Gauntlet from the post-BND run. It had something to do with a blood sacrifice or something. I binged on that stuff a couple of years ago, really enjoyed it but I can't say I remember much except for the Rhino and Lizard storylines.

And yeah, Standoff has been delivering, it isn't mind blowingly spectacular, but it gets the job done efficiently. Plus, the new Cap status quo looks good to me
having Bucky and not-old Steve around, as long as Sam is still the main character.

I think that was back when Remender was going to take over the book though.

I'm excited for the new Cap book.

?

I just subscribed Marvel Unlimited and read the first batch of ANAD comics.

Both Ironman and Dr. Strange are solid, enjoyed both of them. The way Strange sees the world was already explored before, but it us well done here. Yeah, you are looking at a younger hipster Strange, but it was fun. Ironman jyst started, but I enjoyed both the reading and the art.

Now... I could not get into Spider-man and his poor Ironman setup. There are a lot of in story jokes about it, but it does not realLy feel a Peter story, rather a Stark one. He even got his Rhodes. 2099 continues to be the best Spidey. His number #1 was not great, but solid.

Also did not enjoy Bendis Guardians of the Galaxy. The Avengers one shot was a nice setup and get to know of the different teams (waiting for tbe Vision solo to be available). New Avengers book was barely ok.

Just read ANAD Amazing Spider-man #2 and Invicible Iron-man #2 and my initial impressions remains the same. Iron-man is fun and a real deal. Spidey does not read as Spidey, sorry.

Where is Yost now? Why is only writing Thor movies?

So, is this Stand Off series legit (going by Kraven's party)? Because it seems like a precursor to Civil War 2 which, knowing it's advertisement for Captain America's flick, I have no desire of reading it.

It's pretty much completely unrelated to Civil War II; it's more of an excuse to bring back Steve Rogers and have a bunch of villains wreck shit. It's decent - and the Alpha/Omega issues are written by Nick Spencer who is always a fun read - but kind of unremarkable. It feels like it could have just been a story arc in Sam Wilson.

But I've only read Captain America and Uncanny/ANAD Avengers for tie-ins, so there could be some good stuff I'm missing.

It's ok, nothing special. The Cap tie in issues have been the best part so far.

Yeah, it's definitely grounded in Cap's storyline, but most tie-ins work fairly well.

It sounds like a proto-CW2 because the premise is vaguely similar : SHIELD uses a Cosmic Cube to brainwash villains into being productive members of a micro-society. But the dumb part where heroes start fighting each other because they fall on both sides of the argument is non-existent. The only disagreement is mostly between SHIELD and the rest of the world as to what should be done to the whistleblower who exposed it.

New Avengers was good too, if loosely tied. The face off with SHIELD was mostly an excuse to have a showdown between
the American Kaiju and the Avengers Jaeger
, which is all kinds of awesome in itself.
For anyone who hasn't been following New Avengers, I love how Ewing has pulled a cosmological explanation for how crazy things are in this post-Secret Wars Seventh Age,
basically, as Reed is the one who rebuilt the multiverse, everything is more Fantastic.

Writing the part about CW, I realize the fact these guys start fighting each other for the pettiest shit is in itself an argument for registration.

No, after Kraven killed himself which is what you're referring to, his wife and daughter brought him back. He wasn't happy. Gauntlet and Grim Hunt were imo great and the conclusion was incredible.

Cap/Uncanny/ANAD Avengers is the base story, about Pleasant Hill

New Avengers/SHIELD is about the WHISPER side of the story.

Howling Commandos and Illuminati are basically side stories about those who lived in Hill
