All-New Press Previews of Final Fantasy XV's First 5 Chapters

I was always there, in the first wagon on the hype train, ever since 10 years ago.

Hell, I was riding the engine like a mechanical bull. My hype has never faltered. Every time I saw the game my hype went higher and higher.

Previews and early impressions being overwhelmingly positive has only increased my anxiety for playing the game.

Versus XIII was my most anticipated video game since 2006. No other game could take its spot, not even my personal favorites like Metal Gear Solid 4 or the Uncharted franchise, not even The Last of Us.

And now we're almost there.

Almost there.

You have my Phantom Sword!
My faith never faltered through all these 10 years, and in my gaming-centric IRL groups i'm known as the guy who is fanatically obsessed with VsXIII/XV to a religious leve.

Lord Tabata will show us the light!

It's good to see some positive impressions coming out early, but you know, even FFVII was amazing for a certain portion of the game and then it went to shit because it was rushed. I would be shocked if XV didn't suffer from the same problem later in the game.

:p

Do we know (or is there any good speculation) regarding the seemingly two different phases of 'flying' mode for the car?

Is one (the first iteration) more of a hover, then when the crazy appendages come out it's for higher altitude? :O

Everything about this game looks and sounds amazing...

except the combat.

Combat just looks so dull and boring.

I love the friends duo dynamic, the towns, the npcs, the shops, the va for the most part, the dialogue trees, the open world, camp, etc.

but ugh, the battles.

Have you actually played?
I did play this game and the combat is one of the best aspect of the game.

For the next page, a couple folks mentioned using Japanese voice acting if you're bothered by the English voices. Is that actually an option? I couldn't find anything confirming that online.

I saw from Gameblog that if you want to turn off the UI, there is only a On/Off switch and it disables everything on screen, even the objectives. I guess it's good for a screen-free playthrough, but for those who likes customizing their huds not so much.

As long as the game still gets linear after the opening chapters, I'll be quite happy.

I don't want a world like Xenoblade Chronicles X to explore from the get-go... at least for too long. After 20ish hours, that was very difficult to keep going...

Yes, at least my pre order copy said that (English/Japanese).

Well the open world where you fight looks boring as well as the actual combat doesn't look challenging at all.

Well this could be a bad thing or a good thing or a bad thing. If the combat wasn't challenging, I think we would have lot more videos of people actually being profecient at combat. Most videos this is simply not the case.

That is an option, yes. French and German, too. Not sure if it'll be on the disc or an optional download yet, but it'll be available.

I'd be more than happy if FFXV ends up being another FFVII.

Sweet. The last round of earlier-game previews were also quite positive. But I've been a little worried that the world/journey would quickly get formulaic (go to new area, go to tomb, find phantom weapon, ride car for two minutes, repeat).

It sounds like that is NOT the case.

SE's releasing multiple demos to press, each bigger/better than the last is an interesting approach too. Maybe it gets some early buy in from those journos (and the positive impressions likely help drive sales). But when it comes to review time, do these folks have to start again at the beginning and replay the section they've already hit 2 or 3 times? How will that color their impressions?

Yes dual audio is confirmed

Very cool. That might help significantly as it will hopefully help my issues with the audio pacing as my basic understanding of Japanese won't be keen enough to hear it if it's there too.

That Xenoblade quote is definitely a good sign for me, even if he did call it "meandering" LMAO. Xenoblade was my favorite JRPG of the last console generation & one of my favorite JRPGs of all time. If FFXV can come even a smidgen close to that, I'll be more than pleased. I'm still pretty hyped for the game, it's getting closer & closer to the day!

Just from watching preview footage, I don't think that's accurate. Unless what they mean by "UI" is specifically something like, say, the health bars, or the weapon wheel, I didn't see those disabled at all, but things like stamina bar, button prompts and stuff we've seen disabled independently from the HUD, and impressions from people playing this at events show that you can disable stuff like Parry/Counter prompts, mini-map, guides (whatever the fuck that is) and those are all individual options separated from the Hide HUD toggle.

I'm not expecting something nearly as customizable as Wild Hunt, but it seems to be decent enough.

Hopefully those positive impressions persist through the rest of the game and it reviews well.

Regardless of how good it may end up for the game as a whole, the decision of making it more linear as you approach the end will definitely help with reviews, I think. Especially if the ones reviewing it are the same who already played the first areas a million times. Just when they can't stand the open world stuff anymore, it gets linear and takes them on a scripted ride to the end.

That's actually a really clever design solution to the problem that many have with open world games of having the time of their life for like 30 hours, and then getting so sick of the formula that they don't even finish the game they were adoring a few hours ago.

Destructoid:

"Most of our heroes might look generic at a glance but they're emotive, have more intriguing motivations than a lot of previous Final Fantasy party members, and the world -- Eos -- is easily the best part. Think of it like a wondrous jacked-up Spira from X, with a bigger budget and less tacky nonsense like Blitzball (I actually don't hate it despite said tackiness, but that's a discussion for another day).

Even if XV crashes and burns with a horrible mid to endgame (is anyone else really jazzed to see what the superbosses will be like?), I think Eos will carry the adventure. It's gorgeous and teeming with life and personality, and there's going to be a hefty community around the high level of food porn present in XV. It's fantastic. The same goes for traveling around by foot, Chocobo, or car -- it really just grows on you over time until you're stuck in the world, committed to seeing it through until the end. Folks who dig the meandering nature of the pair of Xenoblade games will fit right in."

I think they mean chronicles.....because X sucked hard core, and I already know this is going to be way better. God, I hated everything about X except staring at the world.

"hello?" "this is vagina"
I really hope someone makes their raw captures available for download. Impossible to make much of a judgement on how it looks based off YouTube footage.

How many total chapters are there in the game?

There is no shortage of recent XV videos where the player gets their ass handed to them fighting some dungeon boss or just driving around in the dark.

Could (probably) be the player is just bad, but there is also no shortage of Platinum Demo footage of players showing you what's possible, and that's with only a few weapons, no party members, one spell and a horrible framerate.

Me too, if it doesn't go pear shaped in the latter half then it sounds really promising.

Do we consider 8+ reviewing well? It seems like many people think anything below 9 is trash.

Star Ocean 4 and Infinity Undiscovery ended up with very low reviews, and I actually loved both games... SO4 is one of my fav rpgs of all time... so I wouldnt rely much on reviews, specially because most of people reviewing them dont even play rpgs =p

I think 8+ is fine.

Though if it's high meta of 80's there will still be that stupid: "waited 10 years for mediocrity"

15, I think.

XV

It takes an estimated 40-50 hours to complete the main story. Add another 100 on top of that if you plan on completing all of the side content.

Thanks guys. I guess I should have known that. LOL. Including all the side content, the game is basically 150 hours or so. That's good.

That's true, and on the flip side I have played games with great reviews and not liked them at all. As long as it's not broken and get's above 7 then I will still be hyped. Even if it's lower I will still play it, it's Final Fantasy after all.

Yeah scores over 8 are what i'm hoping for. I think people expect high scores for a mainline Final Fantasy. Although listening to various podcasts, a lot of the press (on the podcasts anyway) are dubious because of the long wait, so i'm not sure what is expected with this game specifically.

I'm not seeing the game completely derailing because of tech issues anymore. If it derails it would be because of the story not having a good payoff for its length or if dragged on for too long.

Most of AAA games are sitting on my closed because I don't feel like playing them =p

8+ is definitely a good score. Witcher 3 is considered one of the best open world games in recent years and was still in the early 90s with a 92.

Yeah, even after the not so great showing at E3 I never stopped believing. I really hope this game turns out great and sells a ton.

Same here. I understand why people are hesitant (lots of naysaying in that polygon preview thread) but if you've ever loved FF, you should be rooting for this game to do well so they will keep making FF games. Goes without saying that you shouldn't financially support games you don't like, but a lot of people are almost acting like 15 hours is nothing and there's still plenty of time for the game to be terrible. Why would you want that?

I absolutely can't wait to play on my shiny new PS4P. I think I'm gonna grab it on launch and stay away from reviews until I finish it.

If you guys want to actually read the GameSpot preview here it is.

The narrative told in FFXV's first five chapters is captivating, offering an enticing setup for an epic conflict.

The brief time it takes to access FFXV's open world makes it stand apart from past entries. But none of this would mean anything if the combat system wasn’t up to par. Fortunately, this aspect has been the highlight of my experiences thus far, providing tense and exhilarating battles against a variety of creatures both small and large.

Whether for fans or newcomers, the game's numerous mechanics and activities proved rich and engaging. What remains out in the world of Eos is undeniably alluring, and I can't wait to explore more of it once the game finally launches this November.

So proud of myself for never doubting the game even ONCE when a lot did :)

Uhhh, I'm not sure being proud of sticking to one perspective no matter what is something to be proud of.

If I'm skeptical about something I let myself unpack that and be skeptical about it. Doesn't mean I'm not happy if it ends up turning out well in the end.

Constructive criticism is a very good thing.

I want to hear more about fishing! Can I sink hours into it? I've always been enamored with fishing crafts in FF games.

You don't need to be empathetic towards me.
Hopefully this isn't just your typical marketing for large AAA games that the big sites do before release. Instead of any actual objective opinions regarding issues.

Let's hope the reviews match the previews.

I wish they would bump up the release date ;_;

2 months was too far. mid november would be <3

That would've been perfect. It would've been so nice to play this during Thanksgiving break but now I'll probably have to play it once the semester ends so I don't get distracted. rip me.

Yea even as someone who is greatly anticipating this game, I wouldn't take all these previews to heart. Especially for those that really care about what others think of the game.
