Alternate Button Configurations for Shinobi?

I finally picked up a copy of Shinobi for the PS2, and I'm enjoying the game so far. However, I'm having a little trouble with the control scheme. I often tap the X button accidentally to jump, so I'm constantly dashing into enemies and missing jumps. This was especially frustrating in the second boss fight, where I found myself dashing off the building :lol.

The game allows button configuration to hopefully aid this problem. I'd like X to be the jump button, O for the flying stars, [] to stay the same and act as the main attack. However, now I have to figure out where to put the dash. /\ seems to far away from the thumb for such a crucial button. I'm tempted to put the dash button on L1 , but I'm afraid if I do that then I'll try hitting one of the right shoulder to dash to the right.

I'm not quite sure what to do now. Are there any Shinobi fans with their own custom control schemes and recommendations?

I had the same problem at first, but stuck with the default and got used to it before too long. If I were going to switch it up, I'd probably just swap jump (put it on X) and dash (put it on O). Having them next to each other makes the "jump-dash-jump" thing a little more natural.

Most of the time when I use shurikens it's just a burst for the tate-setup stun, so I wouldn't devote one of the relatively "prime" lower three buttons to them, myself. In the sequel, Nightshade, I think shurikens got moved to a shoulder button to make way for the new homing kick.

Yeah, I was trying to figure out what button (circle or triangle) would be easier/closer to hit. I think you're right, simply switching the dash and jump buttons might work best.

Yeah, I was using SlideWinder's configuration too. Think I also moved the magic button to a different place too cause I kept hitting it by accident.

The flaw with that control scheme is that when you do need to dash and attack, it takes longer to hit the attack button after dashing. The only solution to this is to use the default scheme or switch the jump button and the attack button.

That's true. You are going to be doing a fair amount of dash-attack-dash-attack-etc (Air Tate) later on, too. I'd try and get used to the default :p

Edit: Not that you aren't doing the dash-attack-dash-etc thing the whole game, but it seems a little more urgent when you are doing it over a bottomless pit as opposed to on the ground. I guess there's not that much of that in Shinobi compared to Nightshade, though.
