Am I the only one getting a bomba vibe from Disney's upcoming OZ film?

I feel like another theatrical re-release of The Wizard of Oz would probably make more money. This looks awful. Who was dying for a prequel to the Wizard of Oz?

it looks surprisingly decent to me? like it'll be at least better than all of disney's recent live action outings.

I don't think this will be John Carter as that was just embarrassing. I see it doing over $200 million domestically.

Disney really aren't afraid the splash the cash for their films. It seems every film they release, whether it be animated or live-action, has an obscene budget.

I never thought it looked particularly good. Same sort of think as Alice in Wonderland, style over substance.

Franco didn't seem unfitting though. I was more turned off by Mila Kunis, who seems completely miscast for this sort of movie universe.

It has Oz on the tittle, no I don't think this will be a "bomba"

IF anything it will break even and let Raimi and Franco in decent position.

I'm guessing you've never seen that other big-budget Disney move with Oz in the title?

Personally, I loved Return to Oz and consider it one of my all time-favorites from the 80's... but it was a complete bomb and nearly tarnished the Disney name. It was a freaking horror movie.

There is no hype whatsoever. So yeah.

But you gotta give Franco some credit. Running around with Kunis, Gomez, Hudgens, Weisz in just 2 movies is a pretty good ratio.

It looks just generic enough to be a safe bet overseas. I doubt it'll be a hit, and I doubt we'll see more "Oz" movies after this - but it should break even pretty easy. $40M opening, decent numbers through the following 5 weekends - and it'll be an easy sell in countries where Alice made bank.

I thought this same thing other day. I just feel there's no way it's doing well. Taking John Carter's release window a year after also, adds to the feeling. Plus having no desire to see it myself, things just seem quiet about it.

Kunis bored at promo.

how do you guys pronounce Bomba? i say it Bom-BA with a hard B sound.

anyways, the movie looks like its taking the simple and quaint Wizard of Oz and turning it into a summer blockbuster thats EPIC and DARK and EXPLOSIONS!!111!!!!

did anyone want this.

also prequels bother me in general. for one, it always fucks up the continuity. and second, it always looks better than the first one, but its taking place in the past.

so its like, why does everything look like shit and not glossy CGI in the future now. its just such a jarring shift in visuals that doesnt make any sense. and then its awkward cuz the characters in the first one make no acknowledgement of new characters or events in the prequels.

i just really hate prequels.

this new Oz just looks like your typical CGI popcorn fest meant for the kids, it will rake in millions and we will get a sequel next summer.

I don't. It's maybe the single most mindless GAF-meme there is, and there are a lot.

This isn't really a prequel. I think it's a reboot. The idea is that if this works, we'll eventually get to a remake of Wizard.

A shitty release schedule this Feb and March will really help this film out. Success is relative when we start talking about $200M blockbusters (people were arguing about whether MIB3 made money off its $600M gross worldwide due to its crazy production costs/advertising campaign), however I highly doubt that Oz will be another John Carter.

IGN scale or real scale?

IGN scale should be used for everything!

"One of the worst films of the year. Save you money for something worthwhile" - 7.9/10

Problem with that is that unlike Alice, Wizard of Oz is not nearly as popular a book/property internationally as it is in the US.

it looks like a remake, made more confusing by the fact that their is absolutely no mention of it being a prequel in the trailers or in the title.

i think it will go down in the books as a 'prequel' if it bombs, but it will be 'the start of a rebooted franchise' if it does well.

Wicked the oz musical did huge business, so there's a demand there. Unless the movie is a complete mess I think it'll do really well, like Alice numbers well. It's the lone ranger and jack that I think are bombas.

It's going to do great. A powerful IP, combined with a mostly empty season will mean big bucks.

Jack, on the other hand...

The Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland™-style CGI creatures and world are hideous, so I almost want the movie to fail. But in the end I think it will wind up a moderate success, doing slightly under half of Alice's total.

From the trailers I've seen, it looks pretty awful. It looks like another big budget CG movie that provides nothing but eye candy.

I honestly hate this trend.

Almost every girl i know is talking about going to see this movie. I think it will do just fine.

I liked the second trailer, so I'm almost definitely going to see it. I think the trailers and other advertising have been much more solid than anything I saw for John Carter of Bombmars. (I liked John Carter).

I don't know. It's weird. The Wizard of Oz has a strong connection with a lot of older people, and there's been a bit of a revitalization in interest amongst young women with Wicked. But I'm also getting a leery vibe from it. No idea why.

Personally I think it has potential. In the latest TV ads I've seen, there have been much more interesting visuals than the lifeless Wonderland, and it does have Raimi going for it. The Oz lore is surprisingly rich, and there's a lot Disney could do with it.

Either way, I want to see it.

Boomers grew up on the Lone Ranger and everyone loves Depp. If it isn't horrible, lots of people are going to check it out.

If I remember correctly, many people were also skeptical of Alice in Wonderland. They thought it looked weird, they were getting sick of Depp's shit, it didn't look like the Alice in Wonderland they were used to, the 3D was really diorama-like...

fucking killed at the box-office.

I can see it being a modest hit at best, as in breaking even maybe. I know a number of people excited for it and I'm mostly curious.

I was just thinking of this earlier. It totally looks like a potential flop.

Edit: We have bombas Guanacastecas (they are like sayings with rhythm) where I live, but I guess that's not what you meant. Every time I hear that word mentioned here I can't make the disconnect.
