And yeah, that there hasn't been a fast-tracked Wicked adaptation for the cinemas baffles me. Say what you want about its quality, there are plainly many people who want that experience.
THR: With Les Mis a hit, why haven't you greenlighted Wicked?
Fogelson: Wicked has been an enormous win for this company [Universal is majority owner of the Broadway musical]. The way it works, we should be in agreement together on when the right time to do this is. But I will tell you I believe that we are collectively moving toward Wicked coming to the screen sooner rather than later.
i don't think it will be a blockbuster, but surely not a bomba.
and does it matter? It's a one off movie anyways.
I don't know if I would call the stage musical's script "very good" or even "good" but it does seem like a no brainer. I'd honestly prefer a closer adaptation of the book than the musical though.Universal says it's going to happen "sooner rather than later"

And I'd say Wicked is a lot more interesting than this seems to be (and the stage musical also has a very good script).
Nope, it's totally not a one-off. This is the start of a new franchise for Disney, they have big, BIG plans for it. I'm talking a place in their parks big. They really want it to do well.
If they wanted it to do so well, they wouldn't have released in March. They would have put it in one of the money slots like Xmas or summer.
March is a money slot, actually.
The Hunger Games came out in March. Alice in Wonderland came out in March.
Lots of others, too. Those are just the first two off the top of my head.

Rachel Weisz
Raimi plus NOT horror = bomba
SPIDERMAN = EXCEPTION
Oz will easily recoup the high production and marketing costs. I highly doubt it'll get anywhere near Alice numbers, but it might turn into a nice little franchise for Disney. March is a great release window for the film and it has little competition in the coming weeks.
I think Pacific Rim is a lock to be the biggest BOMBA of 2013.
Is a $30 mil return a bomb?
I noticed it looked really bad too when watching this, especially around the :30 mark. Glinda looks like she's in a blue screen and her movement looks off, like stiff.So....I saw it!
It was better than I expected. Pretty funny in some parts, cool-ish bits toward the end, beautiful visuals and such.
But goddamn. Some of the worst CG compositing I've ever seen. Seriously, whenever anyone was flying around (especially a scene using bubbles) it was total amateur hour. So unbelievably distracting in many scenes just how horrible the CG was, and normally I don't notice things like that.
