Am I the only one getting a bomba vibe from Disney's upcoming OZ film?

If I remember correctly, many people were also skeptical of Alice in Wonderland. They thought it looked weird, they were getting sick of Depp's shit, it didn't look like the Alice in Wonderland they were used to, the 3D was really diorama-like...

fucking killed at the box-office.

It's a damn shame because Alice in Wonderland was a terrible movie.

Anecdotally speaking, my friends and a loy of my little cousins seem to be interested in watching it. I remember watching the trailer in theaters with some people, and the shot of the letterbox transitioning into widescreed astonished them. I think it'll do fine.

I know this is a gaming forum, and not a movie forum, but this is pretty obvious stuff people.

Jack the Giant Slayer might flop hard. I actually think it looks good :(, but it'll be lucky to open to 25 mil.

Oz is going to go ham. 70 mil opening, 200 mil domestic total, 600+ WW.

Excellent point. Still baffles me. And reminds me nobody gives a shit what I think. Sort of humbling.

also prequels bother me in general. for one, it always fucks up the continuity. and second, it always looks better than the first one, but its taking place in the past.

There's got to be some exceptions to this rule.

Paranormal Activity 2 would probably be the one that immediately springs to mind. Also, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Godfather Part II. Freddy Vs. Jason. Puss In Boots.

Not to say that OZ won't look completely different from the original Wizard of Oz, obviously.

That's a prequel?

I wonder what challenge the wicked witch can be when she can beaten by just pouring water on her.
Besides she can't die because this is a prequel, right?
Well, from the looks of it in this movie
there's another antagonist played by Bruce Campbell called The Dark Wizard.

That's a prequel?
Oddly enough, it kind of is. It's supposed to take place before Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I just find it funny that he was basically banned from the Oscars this year, so he goes to the Daytona 500 and makes an even bigger ass of himself.

Anyway, my issue with Oz is that it completely misses the point. As anyone who has studied US history can tell you, it's not to be taken seriously, but rather as propaganda for the populism movement (while Baum never confirmed this, its too obvious to be taken as mere coincidence), and the sequel books continued that. Now we have something that seems to be missing the point entirely. Shit, WICKED seems like a more faithful adaptation than this dreck is looking to be.

I dunno, maybe I'm just in a weird location or something, but A LOT of people I know are really excited about this movie. Like, I've had a number of people tell me they're going opening day to see this.

For my part, it certainly looks like a beautiful movie, but I have no clue as to the actual quality. But I'm a huge Raimi fan so I'm going to take it on faith and hope for the best.

don't let me down Sam

Come to think of it, there's plenty of prequels that don't look as good as the original. But that's because they ended up being straight-to-video garbage.....so they look worse than the original. From Dusk Till Dawn 3, Scorpion King 2 & 3, Tremors 4, Cruel Intentions 2, etc, etc.

That's a prequel?

Indiana Jones & The Temple of Doom is set in 1935, prior to World War 2 and the rise of the Nazi regime......though there's obviously a meta-reference to a joke in the first film, where Indy is confronted with a sword-wielding henchman and reaches for his gun to shoot him (this time it isn't there - ha, ha). They set it prior to the first film since they supposedly did not want to have Nazi villains again. Which sounds ridiculous, since they could have made a true sequel without Nazis, but whatever.

It's been so long since I last saw it. That escaped me, thanks. Yeah, I remember the reference.

Wasn't Robert Downey Jr first approached to play Oz ? He would've been a waaayy better choice I think Franco is a great as a supporting actor but i don't think he's charismatic to pull of this type of character. Plus the CGI looks like shit. Will still probably be a hit though.

Yes. As was Johnny Depp. When both declined and Disney had a hard start-date, Franco made the most of it and guaranteed himself a $7m payday because he knew Disney were desperate (probably because they were coming to him).

Not only was he approached, I'm pretty sure he was signed on for a considerable amount of time before bowing out. I could be wrong, but I thought the story was that he'd agreed, and then had to walk.

I love Weisz, Kunis and Campbell. If they had gotten RDJ, this would be worth it just for the stars alone. Still wanna see this because 1) I love the original Wizard of Oz and 2) I love Weisz, Kunis and Campbell.

Wizard of Oz is a bigger classic than Alice in Wonderland, so who knows, maybe it will be a big hit. Then again, it looks a lot like Burton's Alice, and many people are sour on that movie.

I honestly can't tell. When i saw the trailer it looked like another copycat trying to cash in on alice in wonderlands success. My GF thought it looked great lol.

I'm still leaning towards bomba it seems to be flying well under the radar.

I'm going to watch the shit out of this movie, probably inebriated in one way or another.

I like Franco, and I like Kunis.

Zach Braff though...

Well, it features the land of China (or at least a character from there) from Oz so it has managed to garner a little bit of my interest.

Oz was woefully unexplored in the films. If this new film touches on it a bit more I'll be intrigued.

Oz was a pretty dark place sometimes.

Franco kind of kills it for me. I can't really see him in that roll. Something is very off about him.

He's one of those people who you know is a douchebag despite never having met him and knowing nothing about him.

Anyway, this movie has Tron Legacy written all over it. I expect it to bomb hard.

That musical 'Wicked' seems to be a pretty big hit worldwide so it's got that going for it. I don't think it will bomb.

Clearly Rachel Weisz is going to be the wicked witch, right? I'd think that from the look of the trailers and the fight with the other witch they showed. Besides she's all dressed in green, I don't think Disney is that subtle (to make someone else the witch at least). Kind of like the power rangers colors. lol

Oh my God I would watch the shit out of that.

cue Oz being a snarky but loveable womanizer with a heart of gold

Tony Stark/Sherlock Holmes the great and the powerful!

dont get me wrong I like him, but you announce him for this film and you wouldnt even have to watch it to know what you'll get.

I like to think Downey backed out cause he's getting himself on a bit of a typecast corner. He's better than that

Every big budget movie in March looks bad:
Jack the Giant Slayer
Oz
Incredible Burt Wonderstone
The Croods
Olympus Has Fallen
Gi Joe 2

What is this shit, Hollywood?

Seeing it for Raimi. It's not going to reach anything near Alice. But I'm hoping it will be more of a creative success. I fucking hated Alice in Wonderland.

I'll see the Croods, too. Second trailer sold me. Low expectations are the key to happiness :p

Neither Franco nor Ryan Reynolds are leading men material. I will lay it out here for you right now.

I think Franco could've been but people still hate him for the Oscars. I don't get why he thought agreeing to host then not trying at all would be a good career move.

I think Oz + "from the director of the Spiderman trilogy" will prevent it from bombing, but I'm not expecting massive numbers

It will do decent box office numbers. Nothing to write home about, but the general lack of any other major blockbuster at the release window will serve them well.

I'll be going to see it for Sam Raimi's name above the door and nothing else.

The marketing makes me think this might be the John Carter of 2013.
