American Idol hopeful watches performance from jail

(MOBILE, Ala.) January 26 -- An American Idol hopeful, gaining notoriety, but not just for his shot at stardom. T-V viewers found Grand Bay's Leroy Wells on national T-V Tuesday night. However, on Wednesday, the would-be “idol” could be found in Mobile Metro Jail.

While millions of American Idol fans kept it locked into Leroy, Leroy was locked up behind bars for failing to appear in court.

The 22-year-old Grand Bay, Alabama native wowed fans with his rendition of "Got Your Money" by O-D-B. Even though he wasn't able to watch his performance from home, sheriff’s deputies tell NBC 15 they did allow Leroy and other inmates to watch American Idol from jail.

Mobile Police spokesman Marcus Young says Leroy Wells was arrested earlier this month for reportedly shooting a hand gun into an occupied vehicle. “Apparently they were arguing over how the cars were in the roadway at which time Mr. Wells allegedly shot the victim in his hip,” Young says.

“Family members say because Leroy is a “pretty boy,” he gets picked on a lot, which explains why he may have been carrying a pistol to protect himself. His brother, Ryan Peyton tells NBC 15 News: “A lot of people picks on him and he's had that problem since he's been a kid. As he got older he just got tired of it and so he took measures into his own hands.”

According to Mobile County Sheriff's department records, Wells has a prior criminal record including seven other arrests. The charges range from disorderly conduct and possession of marijuana, to carrying a pistol without a permit.

His brother says despite those incidents, Leroy is destined for stardom and would not go as far as shooting another human being. “I'm saying he didn't do it. It's all hear-say from what I know.”

Wednesday, Leroy’s family had trouble coming up with bond money, some $11,000, but later were able to come up with the money. Leroy was released from custody early Wednesday evening.

I say that if you can sing (pop, R&B, gospel, country, opera, etc.), you should get in.

EDIT: I think I may be wrong about that mystery guy. :p

WTF he was laughing at her at first and then when he realized that no one was going to join in he stfu. I agree she had a really good voice but not for this compitition. No one listens to show tunes unless they are gay, or really fat and ugly.

I don't think it was the dad that he was talking about earlier.

And yeah, LL laughed at the chubby girl the minute she walked in but he did try to be polite about it and sometimes you can't help but laugh at some things like that. I think overall he's one of the better guest judges. The guy from Kiss was the worst, I just thought he was a complete ass.

Really that guy was simply terrible. I can usually see why people get through but this guy was awful. She says that he's better than James Brown and better than any other singers they'd let through this season. WTF?

I thought she was just talking about that day, not that season. And what happened to "I'm walking on sunshine...OOHhhHhhhhHHHhhhh" girl? They kept showing her in the commercials.

And I hope the kid whose father didn't believe in him makes it big(with or without idol) and makes him feel like the turd that he is. "I just bought my new black daddy a new car, so n'yah!"

^^Yeah I thought I missed that scene or something, what happened? She must be in Wednesday's episode or something.

This new season is looking awesome, but I'm really hating this guest judge crap. LL was cool tonight, but when is he ever not cool? The other judges have been dull as hell, and "Moesha" is next? God I wish they would dump this already.

That girl has an amazing voice, but she has terrible control.

She can DEFINITELY go far if she did more with her voice.

That guy seemed really nice and then just walked out dropping the F bomb like it was nothing. Still he did sound good and was more entertaining than most other contestants. Simons just not going to let anything through that raps considering he doesn't htink its music.
