We missed out on 3 or 4 goals tonight, and once again we can't get the clean sheet.

Petke gets one sub in for a team that's playing it's 3rd game in 7 days.

If San Jose were a better team though, we would've gotten crushed. I get the Alexander hate but he's still got 6 assists on the season and we have 2 clean sheets this whole season. Our coach was a fucking centerback! WTF

I'd also like to say I get tired of ESC getting no respect in American soccer.

We created "We love you" based off a St. Pauli chant that was shortened for a better flow

We did "Take em All" before or at the same time as Seattle but they think we stole it from them.

And we did "I believe" first but somehow it's credited as a Kansas City thing.

RANT TIME!

So after watching about a month or so, I can safely say we FUCKING SUCK. I mean, we are really poor. We have a couple quality players like SJ, Shipp, Magee, and Lawrentowitz, but it is shocking how bad the talent we have surrounding them. I mean, you have to stand up and give a standing O if a player manages to trap a ball w/o shitting himself.

Last night appeared to be the same old, same old. Despite the awful call on Segares handball, we have no one to blame the loss on but ourselves for not scoring a 2nd goal. God knows we had some opportunities that our uncanny incompetence couldn't put away. I'm noticing a pattern here, score an early goal, sit back and let opponents enjoy 70-80% percentage and they hammer us away, and then act shocked when we inevitably give up the goal super late in the game, and walk out with a draw.

Its good to know I can skip a couple years, come back and find things the way they were (suck), tho I'd argue there was more hope when we had guys like Blanco and McBride.

At least we're nothing if not consistent.

Yes. A very frustrating team to watch. I feel like they have more draws than games played.

Dream Global, Watch Local

Two years ago, at the halfway point between the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, England’s Premier League had one of its most exciting denouements ever, with the title changing hands from Manchester United to Manchester City in a dramatic two-goal swing in injury time on the final day of the season. As the action unfolded, ESPN, the US network covering the game, screened an advert for the match that would be following this extraordinary climax to the English league — an early season MLS clash between Philadelphia Union and New York Red Bulls.

It prompted one wag on Twitter to claim: “that’s like following the Rumble in the Jungle with Rock ’em Sock ’em Robots.”

It was not an atypical reaction. While interest in soccer has been growing steadily in the USA in recent years, the viewer stats that tend to get cited as proof of the sport’s arrival have tended to be for soccer as a whole (European leagues, international games, etc), or for the surge that accompanies World Cups. The figures for MLS alone have been respectable but less persuasive, as it competes not just against the other major US sports, but more established worldwide soccer leagues, for attention and, crucially, credibility.

Yet in the immediate wake of the USA’s World Cup campaign, MLS executives are bullish that the country may have reached if not a tipping point in interest in the league, at least a critical mass of US international players in the league – a development that suggests that for the first time the fortunes of the national team and the fortunes of MLS might be becoming truly aligned. That may help deliver the audiences MLS seeks, and maybe eventually redefine what constitutes a successful US soccer career.

A lot more in the link. A pretty good read for anyone interested.

Catalan radio back on the Xavi to NYC train. It's apparently "imminent." I think with Xavi, Lampard and Villa, NYC could probably hang with quite a few Premier League teams provided the rest of the players are competent. Even with the goals being older, they'll be a fun team to watch.

NASL Commissioner Talks League Future Post World Cup

Peterson indicated that while teams in Oklahoma City and Virginia are all but certain, the NASL is not stopping there.

"We continue to engage in a number of expansion discussions in America. We’re still on target to get to 18 to 20 teams by 2018. We have multiple conversations going on involving the city of San Francisco, in the Los Angeles area, and we have two other conversations in cities that I can’t mention yet but I would deem as very serious and progressive conversations."

It would've been a mistake on Bayern's part if they didn't start Green.

Anyway debating on getting Union v Crystal Palace tickets for friday, see if I can't get anyone to go with.

- The Soccer Observer: College Soccer Looks to Full-year Schedule to Bolster Its Relevance
Top college soccer coaches are finalizing plans and canvassing support for changes that would extend the men’s season over the full academic year.

The proposals recommend a 25-game season split between the fall and spring semesters. Individual conference championships would be held early in May with the showpiece NCAA College Cup following in early June.

Proponents of the switch point to two significant benefits for student athletes – improved conditions to aid their development as players, and a lighter fall timetable allowing for greater participation in other facets of university life.

The Soccer Observer understands that senior figures from the United States Soccer Federation and Major League Soccer are supportive of the plans. U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati gave his backing to representatives from Division I soccer programs during a meeting at January’s NCAA Convention in Philadelphia.

Collective approval from coaches, administrators and athletic directors is required before the plans can be submitted to the NCAA’s legislative and student-athlete welfare cabinets for review.

The changes, if adopted, would take effect from August 2016 at the earliest under the governing body’s timelines for new legislative proposals.

Thinking long-term, MLS in "preliminary discussions" over expansion franchise in Las Vegas

Could Major League Soccer be headed to Sin City?

A spokesman for the initiative to bring an MLS franchise in Las Vegas certainly thinks so, telling soccer supporters recently that bringing a team to the city is “really, really possible” and adding that Las Vegas is on the league’s short list for a potential future franchise.

The comments came after a recent visit to Las Vegas by league president and deputy commissioner Mark Abbott, who met with Mayor Carolyn Goodman and other city officials, toured downtown and got a sense of how MLS might work in Las Vegas.

A league spokesman confirmed to MLSsoccer.com on Monday that Las Vegas is in the picture for a future franchise, but there is no short list of future markets under consideration.

“We are in preliminary discussions with a potential ownership group for an expansion team in Las Vegas,” the spokesman said. “Also, there is no short list of potential expansion cities. There are many cities interested in bringing a future MLS expansion team to their market."

Justin Findlay is the managing partner of Las Vegas-based Findlay Sports and Entertainment, a company founded earlier this year with the vision of bringing an MLS franchise to Las Vegas by 2017.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber said last summer that the league intends to expand to 24 teams by 2020, and MLS has since awarded expansion franchises to Orlando (2015) and Atlanta (2017). The league also added New York City (2015) and is awaiting a solidified stadium plan to award a franchise to Miami (2017), leaving one market remaining for the 24-team threshold.

“Hearing right from the horse's mouth, this is really a possibility,” Findlay told a crowd on Saturday. “We just have to convert on our plan. There are no reasons why these big, big dreams can’t happen.”

Findlay’s group and Baltimore-based real estate developer Cordish Companies went public in May with their plans to develop a 24-000 seat open-ended stadium in downtown Las Vegas (above) that will feature artificial turf, a retractable roof and air-conditioning ducts every three rows in the stands to combat sweltering summertime temps in Las Vegas.

The stadium site is located on the 61-acre Symphony Park, roughly six miles north of the heart of the Strip, the city’s famed row of iconic hotels and casinos on Las Vegas Blvd.

The project is estimated to cost between $150-200 million – substantially more than the reported $110 million price tag for Orlando’s new downtown stadium, set to open in 2016 – and is expected to require partial public funding.

The group has until Sept. 1 to come up with its stadium financing plan and will seek approval from the Las Vegas City Council in order to move forward. If the plan is approved, the group expects to hear from MLS by the end of the year.

San Diego State's trademark filing of "I Believe That We Will Win" was officially published today. Parties have 30 days to object.

"We didn't start it, but let's trademark it!!"

- Doug McIntyre @ ESPNFC: Pep: Green deserves shot at Bayern
"It's never easy to be with a big club in the first [team] squad, but he deserves to try to keep going here and play with us," Guardiola, speaking on a conference call with reporters ahead of Bayern's preseason tour of the United States, said Tuesday. "I think today he's going to stay -- we're going see in the preseason -- but I know him. He's always training well, he's a good guy and my first idea is that he's going to stay for the rest of the season."

On Monday Green, who made just one appearance for Bayern's senior team last season, was named to the club's squad for friendly games in Harrison N.J. (July 31 versus Guadalajara and Portland, Ore. (Aug. 6 against the MLS All-Stars) as part of MLS All-Star weekend (ESPN2/WatchESPN, 9:30 p.m. ET).

Guardiola revealed that Green is suffering from a minor knee aliment, but confirmed he will still travel to the U.S.

"He will not be on the field for the next two or three days," Guardiola said. "But I hope he is fit and he can play as much as possible."

On the subject of youth development, I don't think this article on Fulham from a few months ago was ever posted here...

The star makers: How Fulham became one of the best youth academies in the modern game
Jack Pitt-Brooke meets the men who developed the fledgling careers of Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Adam Lallana at Southampton and have transformed FA Youth Cup finalists Fulham into one of the best academies in the modern game

It won't. The US has 3/5 the population of the European Union.

And MLS operates under stringent financial guidelines, much to the chagrin of it's fans.

NASL didn't have a salary cap, TV deals, jersey sponsorships, or stadium naming deals to generate revenue outside of ticket and jersey sales.

The only thing to stop the league's upward trend at this point is either a constitutional amendment banning soccer or world war III

Finally something the Republicans can vote on.

I was very impressed with him when I watched the U-20 game the other night. Looks like a really exciting player. That's a pretty cool honor to get a shout-out from Jole.

Minnesota United FC making strides on multiple fronts

As United owner Bill McGuire explores a cloaked bid to bring a Major League Soccer franchise to Minnesota, the former UnitedHealth Group CEO has high expectations for his current club to be among the best in North America. The Loons took an initial step in June by becoming the spring season champions in the second-tier North American Soccer League.

United has controlled the pace of play off the pitch, too. The club has offered compensation to players that is competitive with what MLS teams offer and has built a reserve team that plays in the fourth-tier National Premier Soccer League.

In the front office, staff has increased from five to about 35 employees -- believed to be the largest staff in the NASL -- and they are working on a "substantial" deal to add a sponsor to the front of their jerseys.

"We want people to know that the soccer club that they've been waiting for is finally here in the Twin Cities," United President Nick Rogers said.

...

On the infrastructure side, United plans to set up a training facility in Woodbury's Bielenberg Sports Center. United hoped to be there already this summer, but construction delays have yet to make that happen.

"It's a big part of recruiting the right players, who look at what we are doing as a club and say, 'How do we get treated? Where do we train?' " Rogers said. "That is going to be good for us in the long run."

And then there's building a possible soccer-specific stadium -- a key component to a possible MLS bid.

"We are exploring this notion of a stadium and what that might look like," Rogers said. "It's something that we are learning about and seeing how that figures into our future."

I'm glad he's getting PT with Sacramento and the U-20 team, but it's mindboggling that he's only picked up a few minutes this season with the Quakes.
The CBA expires either this year or the next. I'm guessing it'll go up to 4.5 mil
I have to imagine there will be a pretty significant increase. I really hope there isn't a strike.
