Was a shame to concede that second goal especially since the MLS team really had done well for much of the game after the early struggles. I like the format of playing a big team like that, but there's a level of embarrassment that comes with losing to a team missing their big players so I wonder if it's a net positive or what. Obviously brings in some fans who would skip it otherwise.
The best case scenario is we smash whichever team we have in the match. With enough regularity, it gives the league a bit more legitimacy in the eyes of the rest of the world to some degree? Or not and just makes us seem like a circus act but with a bit more awareness that we exist.
Short term it brings in ratings. Puts the league back on the radar of the plebs not committed to the sport. Which in turn gives them more legitimacy and makes them more lucrative for American networks and in other countries as well. The trade off being an overall gain in legitmacy?
Very curious about their actual metrics. I am hopeful of an actual over all strategy and not just a short term cash grab.
I personally don't like the matches for what they are just from a competitive stand point. I think I would only ever be happy with the format if, say the opposing team was made up of a collection of all-stars from whichever league could actually pull something like that off.
I don't see the top flight in Europe willing to ever do anything like that. Ever. Perhaps Liga MX, Primera División? But even that is far-fetched, and even more so when you take the scheduling into account.
