Amiibo Discussion Thread 2: I Got 99 Pre-orders But A Rosalina Ain't One

Every Amiibo acquired. Feels good, man.

I have 0 of the 4 retailer exclusives from Wave 3 pre-ordered though (too lazy to actually go to stores and place an order), so I feel like I'm probably in for some pain in a few weeks.

I think purchasing decisions (by the retailers) were made at E3 when Nintendo showed them off. Shortly thereafter, orders were placed and shelf space was allocated. Walmart had little faith and and it shows. Target was a little more on board and Toys R Us, being a toy store, showed them the most love.

No one, however, could foresee the Amiibo meltdown that has happened since launch. Whether it is genuine Amiibo love or an artificial shortage orchestrated by Nintendo to scare retailers into buying more (and customers into craving more) is still unclear.

Bottom line: we need more Amiibo. All over our faces.

Less popular? How can you determine their popularity when they shipped a specific amount at launch based on speculation rather than demand? Marth hasn't been available in stores since November. Meanwhile, my local Target still hasn't gone through their launch shipment of Kirby and Mario. I swear, people on this site will defend anything. Maybe they should just cancel the Amiibo line altogether if they don't have enough supply to fulfill demand. They're letting the scalpers win, and it's not cool.

People on this site will attack anything, too.

Marth hasn't been in stores because it is one per box. A true Marth fan already bought it before the demand of them being "rare" garnered interest into certain collectors that had no intention buying him. Quite honestly if that is the reason that pushes people to buy Marth then they don't deserve to have him.

So collectors looking for the entire set don't deserve to have him because they didn't buy him within the first 3 weeks of release, but maybe instead spent $150 on the other amiibos first?

Who are you to decide who deserves an amiibo anyway? Who does deserve them? Scalpers that have bought several to sell them to the collectors that you apparently think don't deserve them anyway?

From a Wal-Mart in Austin, TX today:

These people don't buy Marth because they appreciate him as a character it is because he is rare and they want it to be shown in their collection. These people are just as bad as scalpers buying stuff just because its rare.

Finally got Captain Falcon! Walmart shipped him in perfect condition. Wave 2 complete. Only Amiibos I'm missing are Mario and Pikachu--figured I'd save the most common for last. And, of course, I need to somehow find Rosalina in Feb.

Have a few doubles. Wondering what I'm gonna do with them. Part of me wants to just open all my Amiibos for display/play purposes. The other part of me says this whole thing is a gigantic waste of money and I should just sell my whole collection eventually.

Why do I have a funny feeling that you're the guy who has been harassing people on Skype? shrug

What does "bad" even mean in this context? Only "true" fans of a character should own an amiibo? Do you think Nintendo really cares if a collector buys an amiibo or if only the super duper number one fans do? What exactly is bad about buying a plastic figure?

Who the heck cares why they want Marth? The point is, Marth was only available for three weeks. Not many would have predicted any of the amiibos would be removed from supply that quickly outside of hindsight bias.

Nintendo knew Marth would not sell as much as mario/pikachu/link. That is just fact and the opportunity to get him for market is gone. If you want his game content buy his amiibo card.

So...does anybody have a quick guide of how to order amiibos overseas? I'm about to cave in and buy a Marth and if I find a NA one, then oh well lol

Just a heads up, you're running out of time to import the rare three. I just checked around a little. Marth you can still get on Amazon.de. However, I couldn't find a place to import Villager anymore. Amazon.fr and Amazon.it will allow you to place orders for Villager but they state they are unsure when they will get more stock.

But yeah, use Amazon if you can, your login info should work for the various Amazons. You save money if you buy at least 2.

-Open Google Chrome.
-enter amazon.de
-search "Marth Amiibo"
-Check the price, should not be more than 15 Euros.
-Activate Google Translate (Right click on the webpage and select translate, or go to options in the top right corner of the window and choose translate this page).
-Log in to you amazon account, no matter where you are it should work.
-Try to buy 3 or more figures, shipping is way cheaper that way, add them to your cart.
-Choose your payment option and be sure to select your preferred shipping method, cheapest on the top.
-Pay up.
-Receive email notification with shipping.
-Wait.
-Eat something while waiting.
-Cry because of the stress of waiting.
-Go watch Madagascar's Penguins.
-Come back to your house, your shipment was there today but you missed it, DAMN YOU DREAMWORKS.
-Wait until the next week for it to arrive.
-Here it is! Open it!
-OH MY GOD ITS BEAUTIFUL DID I JUST PAID 60 BUCKS FOR A FEW TOYS WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME.
-Enjoy

lmao. This sums up my experience so far perfectly. I have imported several amiibos at this point, and have yet to receive a single one. So I wait impatiently, and kick myself for spending so much money.

So I've kind of decided that I just won't get the Villager. He's the only "rare" figure I don't have. If I don't have him, I won't feel compelled to get everything else. If I DID get him, I'd probably sink myself hunting everything down.

Captain Falcon came today though. That butt is way too sculpted.

This doesn't explain why certain figurines are already being discontinued even though there is clear demand for them.

But how much of that demand has been created by a combination of scalpers and the knowledge that they had been discontinued? In an ideal, scalper-less world where people also didn't know production statuses, I'd bet that we'd still see even some Marths and Little Macs on store-shelves here and there, with everyone who really wanted them getting them without too much effort. But then people hear words like "discontinued" and two groups suddenly arise - the panic buyers and the people who see dollar signs, which leads to every last unit getting snagged up all at once.

If you need any proof, look at Wii Fit Trainer: she was readily available until the day people found out she was going out of print. Then over the course of one day she disappeared from store shelves everywhere and quickly reappeared on eBay en masse. I'm not necessarily sure you can blame Nintendo for that. Sure, they could have produced more, but either it would have been too little to the point that scalpers would have still nabbed them, or too much to the point that they're sitting on shelves everywhere unsold, like Peach is now.

This doesn't explain why certain figurines are already being discontinued even though there is clear demand for them.

Regardless of the demand, I have a feeling the discontinuation of these figures was all pre-determined by Nintendo based off their own metrics (popularity, how recognizable they are, etc).

Look at it like this.. Nintendo has a goal of making 1 Amiibo for each character in smash, right? Thats 50 characters. The amount of shelf space a retailer is going to give Nintendo for Amiibos would not allow for 50 separate characters all at once, hence why they are being released in waves with some of the more "popular" characters being continually distributed (mario, link, etc).

Basically, if we want 50 figures, some of them have to be discontinued.

Now, I doubt this means that they will never be made again. I have a feeling once this entire series is released, Nintendo will sell the figures individually on their website (probably at a marked up price too). But for now, they are having to discontinue some of the less recognizable figures because there just isnt simply enough room to shelf all of them in stores.

So why exactly do people want a North American version if they're not region locked? The fact that NA Marth is 70 dollars while EU Marth is 15 euro's is quite shocking.

Some info with a Nintendo Representative on Reddit, take it with a grain of salt: http://www.reddit.com/r/amiibo/comments/2rgfte/nintendo_rep_inperson_miniama_answers_thanks/

Quoting important bits:

Introduction:
(...) This particular Nintendo employee is not your average Nintendo rep—he's a US regional rep who has quarterly meetings in Japan with executives, attends conventions like E3 and even TGS sometimes. As he is part of a very small pool of people, he has asked me to refrain from giving his name, full title, and location, as well as my location and place of work.(...)

rarer figures will be getting another run please!

NR: "As far as I know—yes. I'm constantly asked about certain figures being discontinued, and I've yet to receive that memo. From the way I understand it, it's going to be similar to the Disney Vault. Characters like the Wii Fit Trainer will come out, disappear, and be redistributed later on. I know certain retailers have removed some figures from their systems, but that is most likely because we haven't sent them any reorders they've asked for. This is Nintendo's first time dealing in toys themselves, so it should be expected that things will be rocky at first, and we're not producing the figures ourselves. Nintendo doesn't have it's own toy factory."

How soon are these supposed "amiibo cards" going to be hitting retailers? Will they be permament replacements for certain figures?
NR: "(laughs) I think Miyamoto was vague about that on purpose. Last I heard, we are still working out the card situation. I believe it's still being discussed, and I doubt it'll be a permanent replacement; more than likely it'll mostly feature characters who won't be receiving an Amiibo figure. It's been described as an 'on-the-go' alternative as well, so you won't have to lug around your entire Amiibo collection when traveling with your 3DS."

Ask if he and others Reps will be in stores when Wave 3 hits. To limit scalpers.
NR: "No, there's not enough of us! But Nintendo is very aware of the scalping situation, and obviously not happy about it. It's an unfortunate side effect of our sort of naiveté dealing in toys, but it's something I know is being discussed."

Can they stop making store-exclusive Amiibo? That has been the largest source of my headaches these past few weeks.
NR: "(laughs) Yeah, that has been an ordeal. My phone has been on fire for the past two weeks, so I'm feeling it too. But retailer exclusives will be around as long as stores put the money up for them. I wouldn't be surprised if those figures got a wider release further down the line though."

One thing I'd ask is if there is any word on nintendo putting any shred of effort into a sandbox//toybox style game (sky landers , infinity) or any word on animal crossing U (this title just screams amiibo support)
NR: "Oh, I'd love an Amiibo-specific game! As far as I know, one is not currently being developed, but that's out of my tax bracket (laughs). But Animal Crossing is a given, for sure, probably sooner than later. Right now Star Fox and the Legend of Zelda are the major focus."

When Wave 4 will go live
NR: "Possibly as soon as spring. I've seen the prototypes, they look awesome, of course."
"Can you share who will be in it?"
NR: "No, I'd be killed (laughs). I believe one or two of the characters have been leaked online though, if you want to search for them. I can say, that if you look at every wave that's been released or announced so far, you'll notice some patterns."

If you could ask him on any info for the 3ds amiibo reader that would be awesome. Date of release would be useful (or at least when to expect it)
NR: "I know it's pretty much ready, I just don't know when they are shipping it. I could see it releasing with wave 4, maybe even after wave 3."

Ask him about the gamecube adapters for wii U please! Thank you.
NR: "More are coming! (laughs) I think the demand for them was much greater than Nintendo anticipated."
That's all we had time for! I want to thank you all for your questions once again, and I'd like to send a huge thanks to my source for taking the risks to answer the questions that Nintendo seems to refuse to answer themselves publicly, and for taking an extra 20 minutes or so out of his day to talk with me personally.

So, if this is legit:

-Wave 4 is coming as soon as March.
-Nintendo is planning to launch a new animal crossing or at least amiibos for New Leaf.
-Cardmiibos are not a substitute, just a complement.
-A relaunch of the GC adapter is coming, probably with a full restock of rare amiibos.

Rejoice! Or not!

For me it's an OCD thing. I keep mine boxed since I love the look of the packaging. It wouldn't look right having a US Marth, EU Villager and yet still a Japanese Rosalina (don't care for her, just an example).

But that's just me.

As for the possible restocks, I already started saving weeks ago just in case! Hopefully it's true!

My DK amiibo is level 50, and overall he's pretty good. The one thing he's shit at is recovery - he'll often recover under the stage instead of going towards a ledge, or sometimes he won't even try at all. I've seen that others have this problem, but I haven't seen too many suggestions on how to fix it. I have some ideas, do you guys know which one will work best?
1. Give him the up special with higher distance but no damage
2. Just keep trying train him
3. Increase his speed stats (he's currently +100 power and +20 defense)
4. Reset

Decided to stop by my local Movie Trading Company. There they were: Pit and Falcon :')

Long shot, but does anyone have a spare Villager or Marth to trade for my potential spare Pit and Falcon? Potential because Best Buy has yet to ship them.

From that reddit AMA... I dont NOT like the sound of this:

more than likely it'll mostly feature characters who won't be receiving an Amiibo figure.

Wtf?!?! Every character better recieve an amiibo. Im going to flip tables if not. No one wants fucking shitty cards. We want the figures.

Dont do this nintendo. You have an obligation to finish the entire smash line.

They are not talking smash here, I think they are talking other series that feature amiibo.

Say, the new Star Fox. Fox, Falco, Slippy and Peppy get Amiibos, but everyone else just gets a card.

Its a given all smash characters are getting toys, and maybe a card option.

Nintendo has been dealing in toys since before Gunpei Yokoi was even born.

they've been in the card game business for over a hundred years alone

Another interesting quote.

Anyone know what characters have "leaked" online?

The only pattern I can really discern from the current waves is that there will be a Mario character and a Zelda character in the next wave. Ganondorf and Bowser Jr in wave 4 confirmed? Im not seeing any other "patterns" other than there has been atleast 1 female character in each wave so far.

Im interested in reading what anyone else finds though!

maybe he's referring to that Duck Hunt video

I interpreted it as a broad statement across all properties getting amiibo of any kind. Like a pack of bombers notebook themed amiibo-cards for MM3ds, or waluigi and daisy cards for some mario sports game.

For all I know, by the time I hit post on this, the interview will have been proven fake, anyway.

This might be when I step off the train. Such bullshit.

Ugh now I'm really regretting opening up my Little Mac. I ordered one from Japan too that's yet to arrive so I might just keep it despite paying $23 for it before I snagged LM from GameStop. I actually think the Japanese amiibo boxes and box art are cool looking.

I really hope youre right, but as of right now, the talks of other lines of Amiibo are just rumor at this point. So I have to take that as if he/she is talking about the Smash Amiibos.

I just dont see how cards are ever going to be an attractive option, atleast here in the states. Just like with AR cards, we will never see them take off. The reason the figures are doing so well is because of how well they are made. No one is buying Amiibos solely for their functionality. Its all about how awesome they look.

And by just making everything into a flimsy shitty card will seriously suck the fun out of this for me.

Cmon Nintendo. Dont fuck this up.
