Amiibo Discussion Thread 2: I Got 99 Pre-orders But A Rosalina Ain't One

I was parked at Toys R Us today because I had lunch at a place next to it and I didn't walk in. I would rather not be disappointed and angry.

My collection with more on the way, all my wave 3s are coming from overseas but I was able to get all the Mario line off amazon. Where are my wave 4 preorders?

Until I see Peach and Mario leave, I'm not holding my breath, as much as phasing out Wave 1 is completely necessary at this point. I'm tired of seeing them.

I think it's pretty likely that we'll see exactly that happen as we get closer to the release of the Super Mario Bros. series of amiibo in a couple months.

Collecting for your personal enjoyment is a perfectly valid stance for hunting down figures.
No reason to create artificial enemies here.

How did I just now realize Toon Link unlocks Link's costume in Mario Kart 8? Now I've got the Samus, Kirby, Link, and Fox costumer unlocked. I might buy Yoshi just because he's common and his costume looks cool.

Too bad I don't like any of the female Amiibos, so my costume collection will never be complete.

I was wondering that but never asked. Does Toon Link work as a stand-in for Link across all Amiibo titles (like Hyrule Warriors)?

And yeah, I just realized that I didn't have a single female in my "Wanted" list for Amiibo. lol. I am going to (attempt to) get Rosalina just to mix it up in there.

TRU like usual, screws up any exclusive item

after seeing the shipment figures for the other wave 3 figures, im shocked rosalina's launch was so huge. even a good number of high volume targets didn't get over 10 of TL/bowser/sheik.

also, bowser figure is huge in person. color me impressed.

just knowing that makes me want to buy a set on sunday >____>

I couldn't get as close as I wanted to a Bowser Amiibo, but it just pleases me seeing how big it is.

Shame Amazon is shipping Wave 3 amiibos late for some odd reason.

It's killing me that nintendo is not supplying these like they should be. Once they get all the waves out and no more new characters are they going to reprint then or just be out of the business until new games that use them come?

By that logic, a scalper derives enjoyment from the profit he makes off selling them. I just think Amiibos should go to people who will use them for their intended purpose.
The market doesn't work like this. I don't think it's any business of ours what others are using them for.
Interesting to see the opinions on this.

Many people buy rare items such as Collectors Editions, rare games and limited edition consoles etc due to them being a rare and collectible item with value.

Do you really think all the people that got that special anniversary PS4 are actually using it?

You can see plenty of sealed collectibles in many pictures people post here of their collections that include Amiibos.

This is getting ridiculous.

I buy 1 of each and display them in their box. Currently trying to find a good case to display them in their boxes.

Just because I see their value and how it can increase over time is not a bad thing. It's what collectors do. I also keep track of my collections worth for insurance purposes. There is a lot of money in my man cave.
I mean I admit that I've done this. I bought the recent Atelier LE because it looked nice and because it might be valuable at some point. I might keep it or I might sell it. I dunno what I'll do with it, I guess it depends on how much I like the preceding games. What I do know is that it's no one's business what I do with the things I buy.

I personally don't care what people do with them, it would just be a shame to see an Amiibo go to a collector who's never going to take it out of its box, versus a 10 year old boy who just wants to use his main in Smash Bros.

.

True, but on the other hand it's kind of a shame that little Billy can't use his favourite Amiibo in a game just because some neckbeard bought the last one only to keep it in storage for 50 years.

*Extreme examples*

Why would it be a shame?

Exactly my point. My nephew loooooves Little Mac and I paid scalpers' prices to get him one. Maybe I wouldn't have had to if he wasn't sitting in a box collecting dust in a collector's basement.

Collectors aren't buying them to keep them hidden in storage. They're buying them as one would buy an art piece — to put on display and look nice. In either case, the buyer gets exactly what they want out of them.

Your logic is like saying "It's not fair that that person got to buy *famous painting*, they're just going to put it on display! I wanted to play catch with it!"

Nope, it's not really equivalent, because a scalper who buys these things en masse for money is deliberately obstructing other people's enjoyment and taking advantage of their desperation, forcing them to shell out around five times the retail price before they can have what they want.

My GameStop only received Bowsers and had enough to sell to non pre-orders. I was told by the manager that they don't know when they're receiving the other's and won't be able to call people who pre-ordered due to the amount of pre-orders. He said to just call in every now and then and may not even have enough to fulfill pre-orders when they get there.

No, to both of these. The issue at hand is still that Nintendo has created a situation with ridiculous amounts of scarcity. There should be enough that everyone can do what they want with them, collect or use them. There are people who collect and store DI and Skylanders figures. But the companies who produce those actually produce enough that all kinds of consumers can be satisfied.

Little Billy's situation isn't the fault of some collector. It's the fault of retailers and Nintendo.

Also disagree with this. Christ almighty, no one is forcing you to do anything.

I don't think anyone disagrees with this. What we're discussing is how we think the few that are available should be used/distributed.

But this isn't even something I'm passionate about, I honestly can understand a collector's reasoning. I just don't have the same motivation.

I agree with you to an extent. 100% on the forcing part, though. No one's forcing anyone to do anything. NoA just needs to supply the demand then keep it moving.

Well yeah if you're going to nitpick of course no-one is technically forced to do anything, but unfortunately these things are so rare in some locations that buying them online for exaggerated prices is rapidly becoming the only solution to get certain figures for people who really want them (my basic point here regarding the difference between scalping and collecting, and why the former is frowned upon). Which is a damned shame.

Like I said, I don't think it's really how business how they're distributed and used. The only thing that I'd like to see happen is a per customer limit imposed by retailers. Other than that, what happens happens.

Right, but you are giving powers to scalpers by purchasing the product. Be patient. Pester Nintendo. Hell, go without. No one needs these things. They're a collectible commodity.

I opened up my LE PS4 and started using as soon as it came in. I bought it not for how much it could be worth but that it was a cool design of the system.

I plan on doing the same with all my amiibos... once I figure out how I am going to display them!

I personally have never given my money to scalpers, and never will - I actually agree that people should do their best not to encourage scalpers by buying from them. I'm just explaining why there's a difference between scalping and collecting.

Have to say, we should all recognize how frustrating this whole situation must be for store employees as well. They have hardly any control on the situation and I am sure they are often treated like dogs by irrational customers.

I was at GameStop getting a new Wii Remote for MPT and the guy there was so friendly on the phone. He told the customer to call back every day for updates, but when he got off the phone, I could tell the whole situation was stressing him out.

Just a heads up, the store employees are really trying to help.

I don't know why I thought Sonic and Mega Man would be super rare. I guess it's the guest character thing?

And has anyone had issues with Wal-Mart keeping to their pre-orders?
So they aren't, atleast in other countries? Well thats good. Won't be able to get Mega Man until March so at least it seems like I have a chance.

Got some money today so going to look around for Yoshi tomorrow since I need to get him before he's discontinued due to Mario line.

Then I shall brave my first Amiibo War with Rosalina on the first...Fuck.

And I gotToon Link preordered on amazon and just gonna let that stay since I only have enough for two more Amiibos so even if I do see him I won't get him...please don't let this be a mistake.

So if all goes well I will double my Amiibo total from three to six! :O

Not much money so only getting my very favorites. The three I have being: Samus, Pit, and Luigi. Well not totally true since while I like Samus, there are characters I'd choose over her but got her since she looked the coolest of Wave 1.

Then the Amiibos that I 100% want in the future:

1: Lucina
2: Robin (+Will probably add Ness/Charizard/Pac-Man since I'll be broke again so I'll order these from amazon then add on gift credit later and I have to order enough for free shipping.)
4: Palutena
5: Mr. Game & Watch
6: R.O.B.
7: Duck Hunt
8: Greninja
9: Jigglypuff

And will try for Mega Man, MetaKnight, DeDeDe, Olimar, Bowser Jr, Kirby, Pikachu, Mario, Link, and Zelda if I can get these out've the way hahaha. Of course if another Amiibo looks really cool I may change my plans. D:

Yeah I guess so. The guy I don't like from EB was nice on the phone when I got there this morning explaining to the customer there were delays.

The girl at the other EB was not as nice.

Yeah my Target guy told me to call back every day, but I feel kind of bad so I've just resorted to going and checking in person.

Yeah, I always try to be as courteous as I can when dealing with them (because I know the annoyance of dealing with shitty, nagging, whiny customers all too well).

Not being a slobbering asshole to them really pays off at times too (though so does being one at times, unfortunately).

Yeah, the two employees at mine are rather nice & I can sometimes get into discussions with them, probably the only store where I feel like I can just talk to them like my normal self. One said to check everyday via phone, but I know I shouldn't bother them that often, especially when I have sources on here. I might start calling when it gets closer to Shulk's release date or I can quick swing by in person & check and help the employee/s pass the time when it can be considered slow.

Do we have any idea on the rarity of the Wave 3 amiibos? I regrettably didn't pick up a Toon Link when they popped up at TRU a week or two ago and haven't seen him since. I'm hoping to find him and Sonic at Best Buy tomorrow, though I'm not holding my breath.

Hey amiibros, glad to see many of you scored a Lucario (or two) today! :D

I, on the other hand, completely struck out on new amiibos today. :S
I was at the TRU in Bloomingdale, IL about ~15 mins before opening chatting with 2 other amiibros when an employee came out and let us know that they only had enough for pre-orders.
I decided to hang out in case they had any other new amiibos in-stock and enjoyed chatting with the 5-6 other amiibo fans that showed up shortly before opening, but sadly the store had absolutely nothing from Wave 3. :(

I have a Lucario pre-ordered on ToysRUs.com (post-cancellation BS) & also via eBay so hopefully they'll come through for me.
Also, my Bowser, Toon Link, & Sheik orders shipped from Best Buy earlier today! :D

I scoped out several other stores (TRU = Toys R Us, BB = Best Buy, GS = Gamestop) on my way home and here's what I saw from Wave 3:
TRU1: Nothing
BB1: Nothing
GS1: Nothing
Target1: Nothing
GS2: Bowser
TRU2: Bowser (TONS of them!)
BB2: Nothing
Target2: Nothing

The day wasn't a total loss though!
I found these cool Nintendo plushies:
k1fx0uS.jpg

I got the Mario & Pikmin ones at Target, Mega Charizard Y at TRU, and the other Pokemon at Savers ($2.99 for the pair!).

And then this just sorta happened:
qD43IXh.jpg

I got Aladdin earlier in the week, found the 3 Marvel figures at Goodwill this morning, and then found a lone Jasmine at Best Buy (is she supposed to be out yet??) & was happy to learn that GCU works on DI figures too! :D
I then decided to pick up Anna, Elsa, & Donald at Target while they were on sale for $10 a pop and wanted to get Stitch as well but they didn't have him in-stock. I stopped by my local Target, grabbed Stitch, and took a quick look at the clearance end-cap where I found the PS4 Starter Pack tagged $20.09!! :D
I didn't plan to buy DI and I'm still only going to buy figures of my favorite characters, but I couldn't pass up the game bundle at that price. :)

For those with Shulk, how close is the tip of the the sword to his body?

I have a couple Shulks and one has the sword close to his body while the other one has him holding his sword pointed far away from his body. Which one is the proper model?
