So, is there a reason for the name Amiibo? Is it like a pun in Japanese or something? I recognize the Mii in it, and I guess it sounds like amigo, but I still don't get it.

Amiibo is some a portmanteau of "Mii", "Amigo" and "Aibo" ("friend" in Japanese) as far as I understand.

Well it seems what Nintendo hinted is that each game that supports Amiibo will have it's respective Amiibo line, as credited on the left corner of the packaging - Super Smash Bros Collection. In essence, a re-skin of Mario is quite possible for his next game that supports Amiibo.
