I'm tired of seeing this picture so I made my own.

Hey guys, I have a pretty stupid question about all the amiibo stuff, and I hope no one takes offence to it.

I wanted to know what is driving the need for these?
I am pretty much baffled as to the reasoning why people want these.
Is it for collection hobbies?
Some function that is so great but unnoticed by the majority that makes them a must have?
Is it because of it being a nintendo branded item that people wish to sell at higher prices than MSRP for profit?
Is it all of the above, none of the above?

I just don't get it, and I wish it wasn't so alien to me.

Anyone?

I'm 37 and tbh I've never collected 'figures' before, tbh there's never really been any out there I've cared to own, I've always had a passion for Nintendo characters though, they've been such a big part of my gaming life and for that reason alone they hold a lot of nostalgia value for me, I'll probably be keeping mine boxed, that being said I must admit while purchasing them at retail I do question myself sometimes whether I should be doing this at my age, but what else should I be doing that is deemed more socially acceptable for my age and gender?, going down the pub and getting smashed watching the footy?, no thanks, I'll leave that for my GF's parents to do while they scoff at me playing video games.

Apparently you can place an OMS order for MK in Arizona because they have a good number stocked at their warehouse, according to the subreddit at least. If anyone would want to be a bro, I would pay for one and shipping.

Edit:Apparently you can't place the order even though they are in the warehouses. It could mean a possible restock.

If true, sign me up as well, any Arizona GAF wanna help me out, can pay $25 total for your trouble...anything to not feed a scalper.

:D I stopped at a Best Buy yesterday and a very kind employee said he had no concrete information but felt optimistic that they hadn't seen the last of their stock yet. He said he's been turning people away since release. No Dedede either but I did spot Sonic. (This is ME by the way.)

Well shit. The post was deleted and apparently they aren't in the Arizona warehouses. False alarm everyone. >:(

I know it'd be best for everyone's sake, especially his, if we ignored him, but I love how that reads like an @dril tweet without context. Or even with some context.

Also, I'm chomping at the bits for Ness, and since I missed out on Ike/don't have a snowball's chance at Marth/don't really care for Robin at all, I'm gunning for Lucina as well. This wait to pre-order's killing me!
If I do get a Lucina, though, I'd actually be willing to trade for a Mega Man at this point.

I suspect the current status has something to do with the chart below. The 'Institutional investors' in the awareness phase are just gaming fans who actually appreciate the amiibo figures. With media coverage (including social media, like this thread), others have taken notice (the mania phase). Some of them probably didn't know about amiibos and genuinely like them, others are seeing $$. It's not exactly the same because fortunately some of the genuinely interested people can still buy amiibo for the flat MSRP, but the resell market represents the spike, evidenced by the market's increase in both supply and prices (see Gold Mario).

It's a spectrum of these two behaviors. There are a lot of people with a genuine interest in a few characters, but they now see how much an item is valued by so many people, and the enthusiasm is infectious. And there are probably people who bought some to sell later but came around to actually liking them. With beanie babies the market was saturated with people buying them as investments rather than appreciating the virtue of the thing itself. Whenever this happens, the bubble eventually crashes when there's no longer anyone left to sell to at the inflated costs, and resellers respond by selling off quickly at reduced prices or they decide to just box them up and store them in the attic/closet, or maybe give them away. Amiibos are different though in that they have function in the gaming world, and the figures represent a lot of people's favorite gaming memories and identities, so the ratio of people genuinely interested to people looking at them just as an investment may be significantly greater.

It's hard to say when any bubble will burst.. gold has been inflated for centuries for example, and whole businesses exist to increasingly expand the market by advertising this fact to the layman, convincing them to join in and buy some gold at the new inflated price. But with amiibos, we're seeing signs of genuinely interested people losing their enthusiasm for amiibos, saying they are too hard to get, so perhaps resellers are about to stumble onto that peak any day now if the waning of enthusiasm becomes just as infectious.

What got me into it is a combination of things. The Shulk figure is what demonstrates the main thing though. The fact that a few years ago his game wasn't even going to get a stateside release, and now people can get a mass produced (dohoho) plastic figure of him. That is the main thing behind my love of amiibo. That characters that don't have much appeal or traditionally would never get any extra products made of them are getting them. Sure that is kinda messed up by how limited they are, but still the point stands.

Then the second thing is my need for completion. It is what has got me buying other amiibo that I normally wouldn't have cared about owning a figure of. It would be better for me if things were readily available and I didn't have to hunt for them, and the rareness of them has no effect on my desire. I can only speak for me though as I'm sure there is a lot of people that care so much because of the limited nature.

It's pretty crazy how big amiibo hunting has been. Anytime I'm in a store looking at a display someone else is there searching as well. Normally we start chatting about who we're specifically looking for or just moaning about the supply.

I helped some kid yesterday at TRU who was bummed he couldn't find Sheik till I told him there were four at the GameStop nearby. I walked over to talk to the electronics guy nearby who was already talking to a couple about Lucario and Wave 4 pre-orders. There's normally packs of guys loitering around displays at our local Best Buy.

Small 8x6x6 boxes fit very well. Maybe 6x6x6 but I didn't have any laying around.

Within US, and with padding, it ships for 2.50-3.00 for First Class package and 5.00-6.00 for Priority.

6x6x6 boxes aren't long enough to fit amiibos without bending the backer cardboard.

So this week we got the Gold Mario announcement and preorders

What do you think Nintendo has in store for us this coming week?

Silver Mario? Wave 4 preorders?

I honestly believe we won't see Wave 4 preorders until after the Super Mario Series Wave 1 is released.

Week of March 23rd is my guess right now.

my GS has a newer employee... she laughed in my face when i said i need king dedede and proclaimed, "if you didn't pre order it your never going to get one"... ;___; the pains lol

To be fair, some EB staff here do that too but with ANY product. I'd go in on launch day to get a new Pokemon game and they'd say the same thing (oh noes we don't have ANY you should have preordered). Then I walk next door and buy it from another shop that has lots on the shelf. I know Amiibo are different but still, seems to be their shtick sometimes.

That's just absolutely unfair of them. No store should ever do that to a customer. Never happened to me, but it it did, you can bet that I wpuldn't take that crap. Freakin' lame, man. That frustrates me.

Just got Toon Link, Sheik and Mega Man. I told myself I'd only get Zelda figures, but I figured Mega Man would end up being rare so I grabbed it while I could.

Well, when it has happened to me I just say "OK well it's next door and there's like 50 on the shelf and they're cheaper too so I guess I'll just go there kthnxbai..."

When MH4U came out the other week we hadn't preordered and they had ONE copy for the shelf. It was nuts.

I'm getting to the point where I'm staring at the commons in the stores and hoping they'll magically change to the rare amiibos. :l

We should begin a search for the philospher's stone. It'll be easier to find that and transmute a Mario into Gold Mario than to find the Gold Mario itself.

Man, that's crazy. But yep, no meed to givr them your business if you can get it for cheaper elsewhere, exactly. Buncha jerks.

Meijer in Portage. They had one left.

Damn, I didn't even think of checking anywhere in Portage, or Meijer in general. I usually just go to Merrillville and Valparaiso. I was looking for Dedede last weekend but thankfully I have that figured out now. I'll have to keep that in mind though.

Sheik and Toon Link are really common up where I live, it seems. Do those go for good trades at all? I'd really like to get my hands on Pit/MK/Shulk/Mac.

Waiting on my pickup confirmation for Mega Man from a local Walmart... BB I work for has no Sonic, no Megaman and no DDD on order/no manifest/no PO. Hoping things change as freight comes across the country. Site says that DDD is able to get picked up in 3-5 days which might just be a site glitch, might be a sign of things. Again, none are on order though. No way to OMS them either. The SKU's show up as "item not order able".
